If I could go back and do it again, DH and I would have gone to Tahoe with some friends and gotten married. Would have saved us $$$$$$ and a LOT of stress and disappointment. All the fluff was a huge waste.

I did share in their joy. My daughter called me twice; I texted, emailed, and Facebook-messaged with my granddaughter all day; and I sent champagne to them. But even without that contact, I would have shared their joy--to the max. Joy, after all, is internal.

Well said Susan. None of mine are married yet but I trust that when the time comes their wishes will be my focus. As a loving parent I only want their happiness. I admire them for marrying in their own style.

I understand Vickey's sentiment, Susan, and I don't think she was implying that she loves her kids more than you love yours, lol. After all, don't we all love our kids the most anyone can love someone? I know I do. But the way Vickey said it was kind, and she was just telling us how she would feel if the situation had been reversed.

I think this must be your DD's second marriage? I can see why she would do it this way, basically an elopement. I am assuming she had the big "white wedding" and as an "older" bride didn't want to deal with the drama. I don't mean to be presumptuous, just my musings.

Allisande, I understand your sentiments exactly. That is the exact way that my husband and I have chosen to deal with our kids. What ever makes them happiest is exactly what we want...same with our Grandchildren.

I wish I had my wedding to do over. We'd have done something like this and saved my parents the expense of a large wedding.

Yes, my daughter was married briefly at 16. The wedding too place in a little park in front of our courthouse, and I was there. Much better than that, I was at her side when her daughter was born six months later. The nurses said she was the strongest, calmest, best laboring teenage mother they had ever seen. They also said, "Your voice was very good for her."

This time she didn't need my voice, and that's fine. It's more than fine. When she was two years old she would inform me on a regular basis, "Self do it!!" Self has been doing it ever since, and I'm enormously proud of her. She raised her daughter with love and attention, worked her way through college, and is enjoying an excellent career. When she receives her Master's Degree in May, I'll be there.

Well, a little different situation than I had thought, but actually quite fantastic. I see many teen moms and in many situations it doesn't turn out so well. But your DD's situation kind of goes back to the money thread where we were discussing the sense of entitlement many have today. Your daughter is a hard working young lady who has drive and ambition, you should be very proud. And they are both gorgeous, to boot.

I've heard you talk about your DD and the struggles of single Motherhood and admired her so much!!! She has accomplished much more than a lot of people!! I am happy she is happy and I know from a Mom's heart that is all you wish for!

Wow--I thought I was better with words than that. It was a nice apology from Vickey, and my response was not mean spirited in the least. I added "for any reason" because life can present many opportunities to feel devastated beyond wedding disappointments. And when I say I'm being sincere, I mean it. I was sincere. I don't know what else to say.

Alisade - I'm sorry too for the misunderstanding. That's! the problem with the printed word. It is truly hard to convey what you are trying to say when you can't put your voice and expressions into it.

My DD is planning to get married in June 2012 and I am really trying not to step on her toes. When I was married, both sides of the family were way to involved/pushy and we really didn't get to do it our way. I'm glad your daughter did it her way and better yet, you let her and it didn't cause any hard feelings.

Most of us of a certain age who had the big fancy wedding will admit if we are truly honest that it was not for us but for our parents/family. Unless you're some Barbie that needs that kind of thing.

My own DD got married on New Years Eve 2009. Married by my DS just before midnight. (for tax purposes LOL) Without us. Even though we are in the same area.

I was thrilled for her like you are for your DD.

We had a wonderful one year anniversary party/reception for her this New Years Eve. She was surrounded by her friends who really love her and many of their parents too. Everyone came in Pirate attire. It was the kind of evening memories are made of.

Your DD will never see a snowy slope without remembering her wedding day. As will you. That is beautiful.

Far better than a standard "proper" wedding just like everyone else that gets relegated to some pictures stored in a musty satin album that no one will look at. JMOP

Wildchild, your son officiated at your daughter's wedding? That's fabulous! My husband's ex-wife (with whom I'm friendly--affectionate, even :-)) got to marry her granddaughter last year. I wasn't there, but I'm sure it was a very moving experience for all.

I love the idea of the pirate party! We're anticipating a party this summer to celebrate the wedding. Since they live on a lake, summertime is party time. I doubt we'll be in costume, but as long as I don't have to wear a bathing suit, I'm fine. LOL

My daughter tells me she had a photographer there (a "semi-pro," she said), so I hope to have pictures to share.

I'm certain my DD, should she ever marry, will not have a traditional wedding. And if she has it on a mountain and I'm not in attendance, even better! It would save me the incredible stress of finding the perfect "mother of the bride" dress and the embarrassment of sobbing in public. :-)
