Shelf Paper

Growing up my mom always use paper shelf liners in the kitchen cabinets. Often they had a nice border/edging that would hang over a little. Now that I'm back in that same house I'd like to do the same for the shelves that have dishes & glasware, but I can't seem to find any. I may have to get creative & make my own, but I'd rather take the easy route and just buy it. Ideas?

Not sure what look you are going for but maybe lace dollies folded over the edge and then regular paper laid over the top.
You could even cut strips and use paper punches...there's so many cool designs these days.
OR old lace tacked on the edges.

I've found rolls of paper in good old fashioned neighborhood hardware stores. The big box places aren't worth a visit but I'd suggest hitting some of the older local places.

Rueben mentions crooked cuts. For me, the answer is a T-square, which you can buy where they sell art supplies. The 36" long T-square is the most useful. I just line the "T" part up with the side of the paper, and draw my square line with a sharpie. I just put new cabinets during the remodel of my family home. I got molded (?) glass panels with a striking bamboo design in the upper cabinets. I saw light coming through one cabinet door before they were installed and thought the glass was even more beautiful with light behind it. I had low profile, strip LED lights installed in the top of each cabinet. But when I p ut the supplied wood shelves in, the shelves below were very dark. So I ordered some 3/8" thick plexiglas cut to size. I bought the clear shelf liner with the little grooves. Since it is clear, the light goes right through the shelves and the cabinets and glass look beautiful. I used the rubbery mesh liner for the bottom shelves. I'm having trouble, too. They bunch up and get out of place when I move anything. That's why I got onto this thread--to see if there's a good way to hold the stuff in place.

Glad you asked this question. My husband has been BUGGING me to put in shelf paper, and I've been wondering why he thinks I need it. I've always lived in place with yucky drawers and shelves, so I've usually lined everything with Contact Paper, but only because that gives me a bright washable finish. My mother used to use shelf paper that was impregnated with something that keeps bugs out, but that wouldn't make sense in kitchen cabinets either. I think I'd like to try the LifeLiner if Janwad would tell me where it can be found.

I posted something a week or so ago about this. My brand new KraftMaid cabs are in and my neighbor suggested it to me. I called Kraftmaid - and they said cabs are lined with melamine and they do NOT recommend shelf paper of any kind! Something about it attracting moisture. I did put some non sticky ribbed plastic in the shelf where i keep oils, molasses etc.....other than that, no. It felt so weird . . . but ok!

I'm sorry I can't offer any advice, but we are putting open shelves in our kitchen and I'm watching this thread...

Your post made me think, it seems like I remember in the "Little House" books, Laura would talk about her mother putting some sort of fancy paper edging on their shelves. I may have to look that up.

Stay away from the glue-backed paper. Cockroaches LOVE the glue.

Carol Wright Gifts has a very nice shelf liner for 4.99 a roll. It has lace edge overhang. Item No. 12955. It is 14 inches wide and 100 inches long per roll. Hope this helps. Good Luck :-)Cat

The paper sold by Carol Wright is perfect for the bedroooms and I'm ordering it today. I was in a remodled barn now house recently and in thier pantry they lined the shelves with newspaper with overhang that had been cut into different shapes. One pantry closet had zig zag, another had basic paper doll shapes, etc. Newsprint never looked so cool. Thanks for the feedback.
