how to clean store bought fruits..?

With the recent outbreaks of illness in people eating store bought fruits, vegetables.... is there an easy way to disinfect them before eating?

I wash the outside of melons, fruits with rinds, etc. with soap & water & then I have a bottle always by the kitchen sink I fix of 10% Chlorox water that I rub the outsides with & rinse off after a minute or so. A grocery clerk said her grandfather always used to clean strawberries by putting them in a bowl of water that had the small cap of the vinegar bottle filled with vinegar stirred in it ; let set for 10/15 mins & then rinse berries off well with cool water & drain the berries....

Any other home remedies for sanitizing fruits?

My husband had a heart transplant eight years ago this month. The doctors stressed that any raw fruit and vegetables that he wanted to eat raw needed to be rinsed in a Clorox/water solution, then rinsed. When I took the health department's SaveServe classes about a year later, the teacher, who is the head of our county health department said just a couple of drops of Clorox in a bowl of water would be enough, but I use more than that.

I clean any melons, etc. like this, too, before cutting into them.

A 1:30 Clorox solution is considered a disinfectant. That is only 1 part Clorox to 30 parts water. That's all you need.

June Sky, the situation is confusing because there are several different patent laws that can apply. Utility patents can be given for genetically engineered plants, their seed cannot be saved since the patent is on the gene which is in the children. Plant variety protection (PVP) patents are the standard fruit tree variety patents and do not protect the seeds since it is the clonal variety being patented. PVPC's are Certificates that protect the stable seeds you are talking about, they are like PVP but allow any individual to save seed for themselves and also any use in breeding work is exempt. What cannot be done to a PVPC protected variety is to save a lot of seed and sell it. Note that these are all different and if a plant has a PVP it probably doesn't have a PVPC, or vice-versa. Some genetically engineered varieties may have both utility patents and PVP(C) patents applying to them in theory. So, the short answer is if you are not starting from a genetically engineered plant you are OK to save seed for yourself, and if you are crossing it with something else to make a different variety you are completely in the clear and can even patent this new variety as yours. Which varieties of citrus do best for own-root, grown from seed? I think there's something to be said for being natural. And I refuse to believe it is absolutely impossible to grow any type of decent citrus fruit without having to use grafting. Edit: Another discussion in this forum says that many citrus varieties can be grown own-root, but some maybe less sweet, and the roots require more frequent irrigation and are more vulnerable to disease. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/citrus/msg012036217931.html And for some citrus varieties, the fruit resulting from the seedlings may be significantly different from the parent. It's all luck of the draw with the genes, and once the breeders found a winner they simply resorted to clonal propagation. For planting citrus seeds, one of the really helpful things is to carefully peel off the slimy covering over the seed, it helps the seed begin to grow much sooner, otherwise it takes time for this protective layer to rot away in the soil. From what I've read, pesticide residues are really hard to get off of the skins of fruits and vegetables, especially those that have waxy coatings. I almost always peel all of those types of fruits and veggies now--apples, pears, potatoes--all get peeled because I can't afford organic. If I'm using the peels, I wash with soap and warm water, that's what I read that does the best job of getting off the residues. Now, as for the germs that come from people's hands that might have handled them . . . that is a huge worry!! I'm taking microbiology class this winter and by far the germiest places are those that get repeatedly touched by human hands and not washed. For example, the bathrooms actually aren't that germy since they get washed, but the button for the elevator in the science building---WHOA! For hand germs, a mild acid solution might help. I'm somewhat lax about that but I always wash with repeated washes of water. Unfortunately, when it comes to germs, that just kind of spreads them around, but it's not pointless, it does dillute them, making it less likely that you'll get enough of the baddies to make you sick. I also read that running water, repeatedly is better than soaking, and a brush to get into the nooks and crannies is good. If you've got one of those spray hoses on your sink, it is perfect for this application. Rinsing with lots of water is definately better than nothing. Most of the "germs" (bacteria) on fruits and vegetables won't harm us, so I don't think you have to be paranoid about it. But there are a few that can, and when your produce comes from thousands of miles away, handled by various businesses and employees along the way, a lot can happen to it. To me, this is one of the reasons NOT to get worried about poisoning your family with home food preservation. It's no more likely that you will poison your family than some Yahoo at the canning factory, if you're even slightly more intelligent than the average Yahoo. Learn about and understand the principles behind safe food preservation and then do what the science dictates, it's no more difficut than cooking. As for grapes . . . sigh. I love them but rarely eat them, I know too much about them. Occasionally I will find some organic ones I can afford. In my dreams I have a grape arbor. My neighbors actually have one! I just haven't gotten around to it yet!

Some retailers hang onto unsold woody plants for long periods of time, without even potting them on. So especially if these are in old looking soil that has sunk down well below the rim of the container they could have been around for years. But are probably not 15-20 years old - it could be that the species involved fruit young when situated in marginal growing sites, and these examples being trapped in the containers is producing this response. Also although production from seed is common with oaks there also is some grafting for uniformity and other advantages going on, so if there is any possibility of these two species being grafted maybe you got grafted trees. Such would have the sexual maturity of the source trees, despite still being small themselves.

Every fruit, melon, banana, lemon/limes, etc that comes in the door gets put right into a 30 to 1, aprox, with a dot of dish soap. Then a bath of vinegar/h2o, (not necessary but i do it anyway)...
All before storing away. Family visiting now so big fruit salads with my granola is a morning self-serve as wake-up times are varied. Berries are gathered wild on our hikes, stone fruits are from across Canada, but noticed some are from S. Africa. Just best to get it all clean right away...
Veggies i rinse as i use them, the same way.
The who, how, what of field to crate to the traveling of what we consume...all factors, human error, not worth the risk of unsanitary conditions...

Disinfectant works only if it makes a direct contact with contaminates. WaterÃ¢ÂÂs surface tension property prevents it from getting into many types of surfaces (fussy peaches for instance), deep crevices and nooks and crannies and under dirt, and trapped tiny air bubbles.

Soap and detergent helps to break water surface tension, but is may not be complete.

For some of you who must be extremely careful with avoiding microbes, you may want to look into an ultrasonic cleaner.

An ultrasonic cleaner, by the actions of cavitations, can be extremely effective in dislodging dirt and getting into microscopic deep spaces. It can also work better in rinsing off disinfectants you use to sanitize.

Thanks! Good to know I am not the only 'germaphobe'! I worked in a hospital lab for ovrr 40 years & have a hand soap dispenser & the Chlorox sol'n by the kitchen sink & hand soap dispensers by every bathroom sink; am amazed how many homes I visit & no hand soap by the kitchen sink of all places!!
