Has tapioca pudding gone out of style?

I was shopping in an Asian market with my granddaughter the other day when I spotted a bag of little pearl tapioca and commented that it was a lot cheaper in this store than the supermarket where I used to buy it. She said she never heard of tapioca.

I haven't made tapioca pudding in years, but that's because I don't eat sweets anymore. When I was a kid my mother made it a lot. My favorite was chocolate. And I made it when my kids were young. Is it one of those dishes that have gone out of fashion, like tomato aspic?

I bought the tapioca and made pudding for my DGD (vanilla, her request). She loved it.

By the way, I made tomato aspic, too, just for fun and because I remembered I had a great recipe for it. I loved it! (Haven't heard from DGD on this one yet.)

I love Tapioca Pudding, but since I developed an allergy to eggs I can't eat it anymore. My kids loved Tapioca Pudding, but I don't think they have eaten it since they moved out on their own.

I use Tapioca as a thickner for Peach Cobbler.

DH and I both like Tapioca and sometimes can find it offered at cafeterias like Luby's. And I love tomato aspic.

Yes, situations as have experienced happen all the time, with friends, relatives, coworkers, and recently in various internet forums. People can be inconsiderate, nasty and mean. You do get the feeling that graciousness and courtesy have gone out of style. When that happens to me, while it annoys me to no end because I am only human, but still I try to look at things this way: When stressful situations as you have described happen, it could be: Your friend might not be socially cultured in just that one aspect of behavior, but otherwise completely normal, or your friend could be an inconsiderate SOB on purpose in all manners. You will have to the only one to make a decision to cultivate your friendship further or not, because there are so many other factors in friendship maintenance. However, not to disagree with you, it can also be a matter of perception. I remember in General Psychology 101, there was a topic, which I canÃ¢ÂÂt remember the technical name for. If you are waiting for a bus on a two ways street which also has a bus stop going the other way. You will always feel that there are always more buses coming from the opposite direction. As humans, we seem to remember adversity more than good times. Off-topic?: There is a couple, good friends, who I try not to invite to my parties. Each time they come, they would come with may be a variety of 7, 8, or a doz. bottles of very expensive wines. That always turns my parties into more of a wine tasting theme party. dcarch

Setting the table is the best part of entertaining for me. I love using my beautiful things, and I love washing them and putting them away again, and washing and ironing the linens. (Yes, I hate ironing shirts as much as the next person, but ironing linens keeps me in touch with where they came from- my mother, my grandmother, my MIL, wedding gifts, and even tag sale linens!) I love using my sterling, which my mother picked out for me when I was a baby, and my grandmother's Haviland and cut glass. I love fresh flowers and candles on the table. In fact, I love using the dining room, and if it's more than the 2 of us, I do. We moved last year and the dining room in the new house is easier to use than in our previous house, and I'm happy it gets so much use. I don't always use my good china for everyday dinners in the DR, but I always use my sterling. When my boys were small, I taught them the correct way to set a table, and we always used placemats and cloth napkins, even in the breakfast room. My daughter-in-law is beyond casual - no placemats or tablecloth, sometimes you have to ask for a napkin, bread in a plastic wrapper, etc. My GD, her daughter, is only 2, but she refers to my china and crystal as "Su-su's pretties". I tell her, "Play your cards right and this can all be yours." I gave her an infant feeding spoon in my pattern when she was born as well as a sterling baby cup and a small spoon and fork in my pattern. I am pleased to see that my DIL lets her use them often. I am going to give my DIL (among other things) some pretty washable placemats and cloth napkins (no-iron). Small steps.

We re about to hit the 7 month mark of no stove, with another 2 months until permits get approved for propane. Demo was in Nov, our punch list is long, our stove is in but not hooked up, our venthood does not work, parts of the counter have been missing for months and I need to paint so much it is overwhelming. I have painted approx half of what needs doing (the entire interior, minus our sons' room needs doing, including painting stained moldings and window trim and new primed window trim and moldings). Then, I get to finish a small section of exterior and paint the garage door. Once the interior is painted, and money allows, we need to rip up the dr and new den floor and put down new wood floors. We need to rip up our new kitchen floor for another one to be determined. Then, the backyard that got chewed up by machines will need fixing and we need a new fence (old ugly one had to get half torn down in the process). I expect to get the interior done in approx 4 months and the rest by Spring. We'll be right around the 1 year mark, if we are lucky! (I am not even thinking of how long until the bs....)

Okay, guess what I'm having for breakfast this very minute! Right out of the bowl and still warm. I think you only get rubbery at the bottom if you don't adequately incorporate the beaten whites. They will hold up to some stirring. I remember from long ago sometimes you can get some separation after it sits awhile (i.e., a little clear liquid at the bottom of the bowl). I've had, and enjoyed, tapioca made with whole milk and fat-free. That may have something to do with the potential for separation. I use 2% for everything, unless a recipe insists on whole milk. To avoid separation and/or rubbery bottom, I would plate/bowl from the original bowl, rather than filling each dish from the outset. You may prefer a very homogenous blend, but I kinda like a bit of egg white for texture. Also, depending on what you include with the tapioca, I think you can safely cut back by 25-50% the amount of sugar Minute calls for. Sugar does help egg whites inflate though.

Pearl tapioca is definitely hard to find. My mother made it often, but the challenge was to be sure the pearls were done all the way through. I love the quick tapioca pudding even more.

LOL I'll pass on the tomato aspic but I love tapioca pudding! My Dad made it for us all the time and I always have a box of tapioca in my cupboard. You can buy it in the pudding cups at the grocery store but there isn't much tapioca in it. I think making homemade puddings and custards in general have gone out of style but not in my house. None of my friends or relatives make homemade pudding for their kids anymore - they buy pudding cups.

Love it as pudding. I just made a beef short rib recipe that used a third cup of it to thicken the sauce, which was a great change from flour or corn starch thickening.

My mom is eating it a lot since she had her teeth pulled. Poor thing. I hope she is able to something besides mashed potatoes & gravy, pudding, jello, etc. It'll be 3 weeks Tuesday. Does anyone know how long the soreness lasts?

Out for lunch with friends, and stopped in bakery for a sweet.
Commented to them, that their deli was the only place in town that served tomato aspic.

My mother made the best!

And love tapioca! Haven't had it in years.

Interesting idea to use tapioca as a thickener. I'll definitely try that (peach cobbler . . . yum!), since I have a lot of tapioca left in the package.

If you have an Asian market near you it's a great place to pick this up. Mine came from Thailand and only cost $1.49 for 12 ounces.

Sheilajoyce, my recipe called for soaking the pearl tapioca before making the pudding.

The tomato aspic was wonderful, but I shouldn't have eaten it. Tomatoes, much as I like them, often give me joint pain. For some reason I didn't connect this phenomenon with tomato juice. That was a mistake! It sure tasted good, though.

I love tapioca especially the old fashion pearl kind that you have to soak. I grew up on it, my Mom use to make it all the time. I hadn't made it for years when I saw some at my local supermarket. I made it for DS but he prefers the pre-made kind.

Around here we love "fish eyes and glue" LOL I make it quite often and also take it to a friends mother every couple of weeks. I just use the instant but our grocery store carries the pearl.
DFIL made a wonderful diabetic apple pie with it and apple cider.

I love tapioca and still make the Minute Tapioca in the box fairly often. If I want chocolate, I use a box of chocolate pudding, add the tapioca, let it soak for a few minutes before cooking, and it's great. You could do the eggs in it too. It's great either way. The larger box (3 cups of milk) of Jello Pudding has one cup of pudding mix. It's easy to use 1 cup of milk and measure out 1/3 cup of the mix if it's for one person. Linda

I love it but i'm the only one that does ,so i just buy the Kozy Shack brand in the refrigerated case in the grocery store.

I love Tapioca pudding. The cafeteria at work usually has it. I don't often buy food in there, but when I do, I always get some of the Tapioca pudding.

My favorite puddings are Tapioca and Royal Chocolate Fudge. I only like cooked puddings. I don't like instants that you just mix with milk. We have a pudding company in Long Island called "Cozy Shack." They make very good puddings, including Rice Pudding and Tapioca. My mother used to buy the pearls you have to soak. Too much trouble,I think.

My daughter Gillian used to love the Kozy Shack rice pudding. She said it was all natural, I think. I haven't seen that brand of tapioca yet.

I love tapioca pudding! Mom used to make it from scratch when we were kids but now I buy the individual pudding cups.

I can't STAND tapioca! Haven't eaten it in more than fifty years, but can still remember the texture. All those slimey little bits..yecchhh. The only good use I can find for tapioca is as a thickener for blackberry pie, where those slimey little bits blend in with the little juice blurbs from the berries.
