American Pickers on History Channel

I've become a fan of this new show - I think it's been on around three weeks (Mondays). It's about two guys who prowl the rural areas of the country looking for bicycles, metal signs, or basically anything old; most of it is what most would call 'junk' but they usually sell what they find for a profit. It doesn't sound like much on paper but you have to watch it to appreciate it. There is more than a bit of humor to it. It is part of my Monday night TV entertainment - Antiques Roadshow at 8, American Pickers at 9, Pawn Stars at 10 & 10:30.

Thet should pair it up with that show 'Hoarders'; it would kill two birds with one stone!

I enjoy this show too ( also the other ones you watch LOL)
They are so funny when the see a place piled up & junky.
hoarders makes me put away some things..LOL but is heartbreaking sometimes....Sandy

I love that show. My daughter emailed me one day last week and said she thought I'd like American Pickers and the one after it. She couldn't remember the name of that one though. This past Monday I looked at the guide and thought it said Porn Stars. I emailed my daughter that I was highly offended that she even thought I'd watch something like that. She replied right back, MOM PUT ON YOUR GLASSES AND READ IT AGAIN. LOL

Here are some others not to forget: Griffeth Buck Vernon Rickard Paul Barden I don't believe Americans are dissinterested in things that were not invented here. We seem to be quite fond of things with European names like Krupps, Braun, and all those other coffee makers. We eat tons of ethnic food. Lots of us are tourists. When the Beatles came out many of us became Anglophiles and a lot of us still think the English cottage garden is the ultimate. We are a country full of appreciative people, IMO. I have never noticed anyone not wanting to buy a rose because it was bred by a non-AMerican. Excuse me for digressing. Anyway even with it's flaws I bet I could really enjoy looking at that book, Devon. I usually check the big Botanica's out from the library but have my easy to hold paperback copy which I enjoy. My library also has The Rose Bible and Antique Roses for the South, both of which were responsible for a number of roses in my garden. Linda

I think it is just too bad that the History Channel is going the same way as other ones....instead of interesting, informative shows we used to see on this intelligent channel it is dumbing up and going the route like other cop-out channels with reality shows. Sad. JMO Dottie

I don't have cable, but I watched it when I was house sitting for a friend. I enjoy it, but, I like old junk. I have four outbuildings here, full of junk...and, I have vowed, that once my house is finished, I am getting rid of anything that I can't use. That because, my daughter is already dreading the day she has to go through all of it. One of the buildings I am going to turn into a chicken house. Give me a trash pile, and about three minutes, and nine times out of ten...unless it is thoroughly modern trash...I can find an interesting piece of junk. I take care of an old man who is practically an invalid. He hasn't stepped out of his house in over four years. I keep his yard mowed, clean his house, do his shopping, bring him lunch every day, etc. The other day I went to his house and someone had dumped two old worn out tires with rusted rims in his yard, right by his driveway, about 10 ft. in front of his garage. I couldn't believe the nerve of some people. Anyway, I loaded them in my truck, and stopped by my friend's shop, and when she saw one of the old tires...it has spokes...she wanted it. I told her she was even a worse junk hustler than I am. ;) Well, at least that only gave me one that I had to dispose of.

I experienced hatred that day too when I went outside to tell the workers who were building the house next door. To my utter disgust and horror the new "neighbour" laughed and said she was happy that this happened and that the Americans deserved it. That was the first time in my life that I uttered the words "I wish you would go back to your own country" She was from Yugoslavia and said the Americans did nothing to help them in their time of need. I have watched it and DON'T like it.

They are from eastern Iowa - and I hate they way they portray the people they buy from. IMO, they make it sound like they are dealing with a bunch of dumb bumkins that they really pull one over on. They buy something and then reveal how much MORE it is worth. Well - I guess if they actually do sell it for that.

I have had pickers come around and they JERKS! For some reason they think they have the right to go anywhere and that barns are open for them to explore and sometimes help themselves. I have seen magazines - like Country Living - that talk about "abandoned barns" that people find wonderful treasures to take. Guess what - there is NO such think as an abandoned barn or shed. Someone OWNS it and they are stealing.

Sorry to vent so much - but it really frosts my hide, LOL!

We love Pickers, Roadshow, and Pawn Stars as well. I asked my massage guy if he had heard of Pickers, and he thought it was a new bluegrass group, lol!!

We also like Pickers and Pawn Stars. I think the two guys on Pickers are pretty nice. The people they buy from know they can't give full price - they have to make a living. Most of the people with the junk have no desire to sell on e-bay or advertise any other way. This gives them a chance to get rid of a few things and make a few dollars. Same with Pawn Shops. And none of the people are made to sell things. I have also seen the Picker go higher than what one lady said she would sell it for. He told her it was worth more, so he gave her more. Good shows!

I enjoy all three shows. I've learned some interesting things each week. My son was in Vegas a few weeks ago and stopped in at the Pawn shop while they were filming. Most segments are staged and the experts are at the ready, but still fun to watch. Nice to see the 3 generations working together. And of course Chumley lol

Don't like Antique Road show but do like Pickers. Pawn Stars is my favorite. Did you see the one where one of the boys was trying to make wine? Hilarious!!!

I haven't watched any of the above shows except Hoarders once. What night does Hoarders come on and what station?

I like all 3 also, but have only seen Pickers & Porn Stars once.... forgot which night they were on. I thought the pickers were nice to the people & not disrespectful.

I've watched Hoarders a couple of times. I can only take it in small doses.... that would be soooo frustrating to deal with that type of illness. A part of me thinks it is a bit exploitative too.

Never heard of this show...will have to watch for it. I watch Antiques Road Show on occasion. When I saw the post I thought you were talking about migrant workers!

When the subject said pickers my first thought was guitar or banjo pickers.Show sounds interesting so I have to remember to watch it especially since I live in Iowa.

Pickers was on the History Channel again tonight (Thurs) @ 10pm... probably rerun of Monday night's show. I watched with a particular eye towards how they treated the owners of the .... erm... I would call it "junk". I could not see any condescension there, iowagirl. Maybe your personal experience with pickers colors your view in general?

I saw the owners really driving a hard bargain on several items. These 2 guys seem quite enthusiastic over their "finds" & they seem like they totally enjoy the interactions.
