What do you think of this dark backsplash?

As much as I dislike HGTV these days, I found this picture on their web site and saved it as one of my favorites:

I like the dark cabinets and the white countertops and for some reason I like the dark backsplash. I was wondering if you think this combo "works". I do get a lot of natural light in my kitchen so I think I can pull this look off. I have been searching for a countertop/backsplash combo for ages.

very nice...have to be careful tho...the wall with the range is the main vertical expanse and the stainless of the hood along with glass in the doors break up the dark effect. If that wall were all cabinet doors without glass I don't think it would work. The tones of metal/glass/wood and backsplash color look good with each other. What the heck is that floor?

What do you think of a stainless steel tile backsplash?

I think that stainless backsplashes tend to work better with a transitional/contemporary/modern kitchens than ones that are described as "a lot more traditional". Having said that, the things you mentioned that you are using: shaker cabinet fronts, espresso stain, and light/white granite/quartzite read to me as more "transitional" than "traditional". And if that's the case, I think that the stainless backsplash will work fine.

lucymullis-looks like we will have 7 horizontal rows of the subway on the 2 walls. Will lay out a wall first before install. Plan for now is to use the burnt umber, the clear, and the coral/peachy glass tiles maybe in the 3rd row up from the counter-haven't decided how far apart. Another option would be to just randomly put in the glass tiles anywhere in any of the rows of subway. Nothing definite yet in terms of design on those 2 walls other than the materials we will use. We must have made at least 50 different trips to various places, returning to some places several times. My DH was tired too of all the running around but all of a sudden-one day-we found what worked so hang in there.

I love the tile! I took home a couple of samples, but none of the colors worked with my countertop. I didn't pick up a 70s vibe, despite my sensitivity to that era (although my memories of people and events are quite happy). I think it might overshadow, literally, your marble, but that's your call. Anything that coordinates with cats is A-OK in my book. But hey, you got your kitties at the Sonoma County Animal Shelter? I got mine last summer at the Sonoma Humane Society. We might be neighbors! I'm in Santa Rosa.

I think if you have light counters, lots of natural light and either glass uppers or open shelves, you can pull off a dark bs like that with the dark cabs. Otherwise, it may be too dark. With lighter cabs, it is a no brainer...
I have that color as part of my floor and I really like it. It is softer than black yet still strong. I think it is a more modern take on things to put the gray with brown.

Natural light is NOT the key to pulling this off. Artificial light is the key to pulling this off. This is another of those photos that utilizes multiple exposure tricks in order to have good lighting in the shadows and not be over exposed around the windows. It will NEVER look like that in real life. Having and using undercabinet lighting will be of the highest importance, as well as using the right kind of recessed lighting to wash down the fronts of the cabinets with light and light the pathways.

The floor looks like terrazzo.

I think this looks nice in photos but not in real life. Will end up looking dark, cavernous, even dingy.

Not crazy about those cabinets. Color is okay, i guess, but something looks cheap about them. I like the backsplash a lot.
