Grrr...my children!!!!

I'm going to cook them up, got any good recipes?

They've been in the extra freezer! I just filled a 33 gal trash can full of half frozen foods...By the looks of it, things have been half thawed and refrozen a few times in the garage freezer...They only thing I kept was a 1/2 box of spare ribs I put in there a month or so ago, that was still frozen(tucked in the back), and all the freezer jams. And a few bags of berries(that will be made into jams as soon as we get some cooler weather). Gosh Now I just need the oldest one to help me drag the freezer out of the garage, and clean it out! Then I can fill it all back up..maybe with a bit more organization, and then LOCKING the door!

That happened a few years back with my garage freezer, too. I kept popsicles and Otter Pops out there and they got into it while swimming. They didn't realize that the door has to be PUSHED shut. It doesn't close itself like the frig door does as you walk away after giving it a nudge. I, too, tossed almost everything. They know better now.

Wish I had kids to blame stuff on. Tough part about living alone is I have to yell at the mirror about stupid things done around the house. Good thing I have cats or I'd take all the blame.

Probably even MORE SO b/c I feel like she's been "better trained." " That's exactly how I feel. DD only did it once, and the fallout was big enough that she never "surprised" me again. Her teacher came to the house to get an assignment slip signed because DD kept saying "I'm going on a field trip" and I kept saying "not without me signing the permission slip, where is it?" and her "forgetting". Funny. Because she never "forgets" other stuff (like, OH MY GOODNESS. She wants a battery for this one toy, and someone said I'll bet you can buy it at XYZ store... that we never go to... and EVERY time DD sees that store she remembers. EVERY TIME. It's a family joke now. I've told her I'm not spending $5 on a battery for this POS toy but it's in her brain like glue.) Kids need to learn to be self-sufficient, IMO. And the younger the better. So, vent away. To address your issue specifically: "1.) I wanted to say to him, "hey guess what, buddy, it's NOT your dad who's going to handle this problem, it's me, so if you'd like the issue handled, then you need to speak to me about it...not whine to Dad and then give him the credit when your supplies magically appear." BUt does DH say any of this to SS? NO. So I should probably be annoyed with DH! And I am, don't get me wrong!" Okkkkk... yep. This is a DH/BM issue, not really a SS issue, although he is a major player too. You are caught in the crossfire, expected to build the camp from twigs and leaves and dress the wounds. All with the rank of a grunt. I agree, DH needs to tell SS that he is unable to get his supplies at such short notice and he needs to address his school issue with you. Giving credit where credit is due, making the child acknowledge where their "stuff" is coming from, the labor involved and the time, is very important. "2.) I probably should be more annoyed with BM. IMO, this project at the very least should have been started with her, since he was with her for 5 days. OR a heads up to us from her would have been nice. " Communication. Perhaps in the future someone should contact BM prior to SS going to her house and say "by the way, SS has a project that he's doing/just completed, and this is what it's all about..." so that you set the stage for the next time SS comes to your house and you can ask "does SS have any pending assignments that he needs to have complete before he goes back to your house?" That, and when SS walks in the door, asking to see his assignment list. When DD gets home I ask about homework, she goes to do it (they get a homework packet in the beginning of the week and have to do as many or as few as they want every night, so it has to be done by the end of the week but it's at your own daily pace. She decides one page or four, but I don't let her do the whole packet in one night. It's usually around 3 pages a night, English and Math, for five nights) Then I check the homework, it goes back in her backpack, which goes on it's hook. Ready for the next day.

Lonepiper, I have not. Maybe someday I'll tell her, but I don't think it's really appropriate unless she asks. She's never met my parents, and I'd hate for her to get a tainted view of my SM (her S-G'ma now) before she's even met her. My DH's family is GREAT. We get along with them like peas and carrots, and when we go to visit them it's so comfortable. We just went to see them last month and had a super super time. There is absolutely no stress. Sweeby, I think that's a good suggestion. That's probably what I'll do. I do want to go, but it will also be in the middle of the week right after I get back from vacation, so taking time off would be tricky :) I just don't want to do the wrong thing.

Yes that's what I mean. It's exasperating! They waltz right past the bathroom and wash their grubby hands and then flick the water all over. Gah. I have been working on that issue for years and they aren't clueing in. Yesterday dh backed me up when again there they were at the sink and I said THAT MEANS YOU TOO. His jaw dropped, lol. My sink, MY SINK for food prep people. Get outta my space with those dirty hands! I think your long counter is in a perfect spot. It's close enough to be useful but it's not IN the kitchen per se. Thumbs up to that! Mine is more in the back entry and it's not as convenient. You certainly can put a utility sink in the garage - but I don't know about winter time if there would be a span of weather that you couldn't use it - here that would be the case unless there is a way to insulate it. Definitely would want it on an inside wall at the least. I think you need to evaluate what exactly you plan to use that W/D for and if you will be doing a lot of soaking or if that stuff would go upstairs to the other W/D and how frequently you'll be using this one. I have a utility sink by my W/D - had to fight for it as our bath is near and hubby thought it wasteful but when you have someone sick in the night or stains that need extra soaking it's 100% worth it to me. That is my humble opinion. That one time one of them had the flu in my mind made it worth the extra cost. I don't want that soaking in my sink - and they aren't deep enough anyway.

It's grilling weather here (74° and sunny), but I've chosen to cook inside because I plan to make the Normandy chicken recipe that Islay posted because Kevin bought the dry English cider, and I bought chicken thighs yesterday. We'll also have broccoli and rice with a mushroom sauce for both. I was going to make a beet salad as well, but I don't think we'll need it. I used to crochet when I was very young - Aunt Marie (who was Alsatian like my grandmother) taught me how to do it to make doilies when I was four or five. I also used to play croquet at that age, up until I was about ten. I haven't played badminton since I was about 13, but my sister and I used to play that quite frequently. I only played horseshoes at summer camp, although we did have horses, along with horseshoes, at home. I've never played bocce, however, although I've seen people playing it in Golden Gate Park. We had spicy grits with sausage and cheese for brunch today. I add peppers, celery, herbs, chicken broth, and frozen corn to the grits as well while they are cooking. We've never had a Memorial Day tradition, but one year I drove up to San Francisco, and it rained heavily the first day I was there. I also forgot to pack pants on that trip, and so in addition to having to buy an umbrella, I had to buy pants.

Westelle, I'm sure the last resort would be to ship them off to Grandma...and then after a week..she'd send them back..
I don't so much look forward to being a grandma...but getting some time with my husband, without a small human in between us! LOL So I can wait on the grand parent thing. (unless of course the boys give me a bushel of little girls!)

Barnmom, definately going to lock that door! I don't keep "kiddie" frozen things in there anymore, because they've done this kind of thing for years..I guess they thought "maybe" mom stashed something good in there? and went looking?

The key stays in my purse, which they might remember, but not likely they will. The "chain" holds my 2 Little League Concession stand keys as well. (hence why in my purse)

I need to take a picture of my CLEAN freezer...
It's got "stuff" in it..but you can see everything! LOL

OK, lame.

BTW.......children are delicious fried!
But really best with tar and feathers!!

I can't wait for grandkids........we're going to the candy store, then out for ice cream and scary movies..........then I'm sending them home........

just when you have the kids (in my case grandkids) trained, the serviceman comes to take care of furnace/heat pump and needs an outlet for his equipment but forgets to plug the freezer back in when he leaves. We had just bought a really big order of beef. His company paid dearly.

I still belly laugh when I remember when my Mom discovered that the many batches of fancy Christmas cookies she baked months ahead and froze were gone! She went to the big freezer in early Dec and there was only a 1/2 doz. left! The containers were empty. It was in AZ and nothing, but nothing tasted as good after school as a frozen cookie or 3! We snuck them every day. She didn't laugh then though! and she never baked anything and froze it ever again :( dang it! Sue

Terri, my stepmom would hide the freezer key on top of the freezer! What was she thinking? We got really good at carefully dislodging Christmas cookies while leaving the top layer completely intact!

We've piled our outdoor freezer with cow bones for beef stock (from our farmer friend). I highly recommend this. Nobody but my husband is willing to plow through those bags! :-)

What a coincidence! Earlier this week . . .

My usually very careful DH put some groceries in our freezer and the door didn't shut all the way because one thing was sticking out too far. We didn't find out for about 24 hours.

Some things near the door were soft so we ate them over the next few days or threw them away if the texture was bad. The other things are still in there waiting for a POOF!

Sorry yours was a bigger problem of wasted food. It's not just the expense, it's the time you've put into it, too.

Do we share children? ;-) I've had the same problem. Last time (and I hope it was the last time) was when my husband had the boys help unload a Costco run. One of my boys shoved a large box of Eggos into the freezer, but didn't check to make sure it fit properly. The door was open enough to thaw everything, but not enough that we could see it was open. I was so ticked off. Why don't these things happen right before a big shop?

I want a freezer with a door-open buzzer!

Kay I can top the unplugged freezer story. We had a new furnace installed about 5 years ago. My father was ill and so as soon as the furnace was installed I left for OH for 3 days.

When I got home, I was a blur trying to catch up and being it was a week before Christmas I was super busy. I did 6 loads of laundry and was trying to get my last minute baking done. DH got home from work and went into the basement and discovered about 5" of standing water. The furnace guy had unplugged our sump pump to use the outlet, even though there is a large flag attached to the plug and in red letters says "DO NOT UNPLUG" and 6 loads of laundry water was sitting in our basement. Hummmmm 5 days before Christmas, below zero weather and soaked room-sized rugs!!

My Dad flipped the wrong breaker at our cottage once and shut off the frig. The freezer was full of fish us kids had caught over the summer. We did not get back to the cottage for almost 2 weeks and when we pulled into the drive, you could smell it before we even opened the door.

Michelle, I've been chuckling (sorry!) over the fish story for a few days now. I can't begin to imagine how bad your house must have smelled. My neighbor was taking care of our dog while we were out of town two weeks ago. He and his wife were pickling a large amount of cucumbers, onions and garlic, ran out of fridge space, so they borrowed mine. I'm still trying to get the smell out of the fridge, so I can only imagine how long it took you to get the fish smell out of your cottage!
