If it were me, I'd go all white: on the walls and the shower curtain. And then add color with accessories. I would take down the small cabinet over the toilet and add a couple of glass shelves with chrome hardware. And may I just say that I would KILL for those floor tiles. I think this bathroom is utterly charming.

Being that your nickname is MR sheldo I'm going to assume you are male. Plus the style of electric razor above the sink tells me at the very least a man uses this bathroom. I think the bamboo shower curtain and accessories are perfect with the gold tile walls and floor. Personally I think you are lucky to have this style of bathroom in an apartment. Most have cheap vinyl flooring and nothing to protect the walls from spashes.
I really don't think you need to do a thing to make this room look great. It already does! If you really want to paint I'd either do a hint of chocolate milk three or four shades lighter than the trim on your towels or a gold to match or blend (again a few shades lighter)of the wall tiles making them less noticable since you don't like them.

WHAT A COOL BATHROOM! I really like it as is. I *might* paint the white walls a light shade of yellow.

I too think it's perfect exactly as it is! I love that "weird" yellow! It has a very soft, warm look to it.

I had that color bathroom in the apt I lived in back in 1977. Just yesterday. LOL

I need to go or else, I would be searching Crate and Barrels site. They have some Marrimeko prints shower curtains(did I spell it right) and other bath acessories that I think might work. Marimekko are fabrics from the 70"s.

Looks fine to me. If anything, perhaps you could replace the black stool and the white shelf with chrome and glass shelving. How about a bathmat in a "shagidelic" green to match the bamboo in your shower curtain?

Thanks for the suggestions! It definately makes sense to just embrace this pre-existing retro theme that I have in the bathroom. So do you all agree with justgottabme that I should go with a few shades lighter but the same color of the tile for paint? I just really like the idea of adding some color in here!

The problem with going with "a little color" in a small space is that it can easily chop it up and make it look even smaller. If you can find a paint color that is the EXACT same color as the yellow/gold tiles on the walls, that may help unify the space. Then pick two or three accent colors for towels.

If you did that I would remove the bamboo curtains/towels and go with a plain white shower curtain and dark brown, rust, and gold towels for accent.

To me right now it looks very 70's with the avacado green and harvest gold. I'm dating myself LOL!

I'm not sure I'm crazy about the bamboo in there. I'm thinking something more tailored would look good. What if you keep the walls white and accent with black and white using solid colors instead of fabrics/towels with designs on them.

From my monitor the yellow looks definitely workable (and this coming from someone who doesn't particularly like yellow, LOL!). I would go with creamy white and black. What would a cream and white toile shower curtain look like against the tile?

I wouldn't paint the walls the same color as the tile. Just too much yellow in my opinion - especially since you're not too fond of it anyways.

I sortof like the bamboo. Since you already have it and the towels accessories etc... Are you looking to replace everything or just paint?

I like the idea of painting the taupey brown color on the trim on the towels. Is that color also in the shower curtain? It looks like there's some brown in the green stalks here and there.

My guess is you need the enclosed shelves above the toilet for hiding stuff we need to hide, so I'd leave it and every thing else in the room except I add wicker storage units under the sink.
For the walls I'd probably go with a creamy white that has yellow undertones in it or else a very pale yellow with the same tones as your tile (looks like maybe green or brown on my monitor).

As someone else mentioned, you can bring in another color with your towels and rugs, but too much of it and it may make the room look smaller. I do like the russet color in msjay's link but since you've got green going I'd play off the green and add a rug to match the green of the shower curtain.

I like valzone5's idea of the creamy white walls and black for the accent color. That combination with be very nice with the custard shade of yellow that you are dealing with. I would vote for changing the shower curtain to a bit more tailored design - you could have some real bamboo in a tall vase if space is available. Keep us posted!

I vote for taupey brown as well. I like the way the color of the towel that is over the shower looks against the yellow, the brown rug as well. I also like the black stool against the yellow. You could then get a shower curtain that is white with a brown thick band at the bottom like this one (click on the flax)
