A couple of years ago I found a gorgeous portrait of him on the New York Public Library's performing arts website. I bought an enlargement (wonderful quality!), and it now hangs over my piano.

oooh, Miss Susan that gave me goose bumps! I guess you're living up to your grandfather's last name- what a lucky weekend you've had. First you escaped the horrible snowstorm that hammered the lower part of your state and now you have all these great discoveries. And if your luck holds you'll also escape the additional 1 or 2 feet of snow that we're expecting on Wednesday.

I have the same question as Suzi- how did you happen to stumble umpon his photo on eBay?

I have a search on eBay that goes out every day looking for something on my father who was a bit of a celebrity in his day. A few years ago I found an entire scrapbook about him up for auction. I wrote to the seller and she immediately stopped the auction and sent it to me. It was filled with newspaper articles about my dad.

Susan, you might also want to set up a Google Alert with your grandfather's name. I've done this on my father and get hits quite often.

I found the eBay photo because I set up one of those "Saved Searches" whereby eBay will notify me if something is listed with the name Luckstone. Usually it's some sort of good-luck charm from Ireland. :-)

When I did the Saved Search I didn't think it would turn up any photos, though. I was looking for musical compositions by my grandfather and his brother Isidore. Several years ago the UK version of eBay sold music written by each of them, so that's what I was hoping to find. The photo is even better!

Jel48, good idea--I'll ask him. He probably acquired it in a box of old photos, but you never know....

You could take that picture in and have it repaired I've seen them work wonders with these old, fragile pictures

I'm on a roll.....Here's a picture of the girl he married (my grandmother). This was taken before she met him, though. I just found it on by searching Google Books.

Very cool, indeed, Alisande! Now if you can find out when he appeared at the New York Hippodrome, you might be able to narrow down what production your picture is from.
I found out that he appeared as Count Arnheim in The Bohemian Girl in 1908 at the Grand Opera House in Philadelphia, but couldn't find when he appeared at The Hippodrome.

You can't let this one get away, at least try for a low bid. This chance will not come around again. Stuff like these photos are food genealogists thrive on. Too bad you can't find out who your opposing bidder may be because two memebers in the same family could bid each other up unnecessarily.

The name, Luckstone, sounds like a stage name, not his real name.

According to counter at the bottom of the listing, it has had 515 hits! That seems like an awful lot to me, although I'm not used to following antique photo auctions, so maybe that's average. I hope the bidding isn't going to go impossibly high. I can't say that I'm crazy about the picture (I have better ones, although few so large), but I would like to have it.
