Pretty room. Are you going to have the curtains open all the time anyway? Will you ever close them?

If you wanted to be able to close them, you could do a traverse rod across the whole thing, maybe behind a cornice board of some kind, so that the drapery stacks back to the right. That would give you an entire wall of fabric when the drapes are closed.

The other easy option should you want to close them would be no curtains at all. Just do blinds or shades.

But if you want the windows exposed all the time and want the curtains for decor purposes, I would treat each window identically, with the same width rod. If you really never want to cover the windows, you could just do stationary panels. That could help with the bulk issue in the corner behind the door.

I might consider putting a tall, wide bookcase, painted in your trim color, opposite the built-in cabinet, to correct the leftward shift of the windows. Then you could use four narrow floor to ceiling curtain panels that just cover the trim on the sides, and you'd have a more symmetrical wall.

Would you consider roman shades or similar instead?

Jakabedy - thank you for the compliment on the room! So far it's been the hardest room for me to decorate but it's getting there. To answer your questions, I planned on curtains that would probably stay open most of the time but be able to close should it be needed.

Bronwynsmom - a bookcase is an interesting idea to make things more symmetrical. The rest of the furniture for the room is under discussion as we speak so I will draw it up to see how it fits. The room is very long but skinny (and is also the dining room) with three entrances so clearances are an issue. When the leaded glass door opens it almost covers the whole window.

Mjlb and Jakabedy - I hadn't considered shades but will definitely look at Houzz to get some ideas.

It's a pretty room with beautiful woodwork....I would use an inside mounted window treatment like a roman shade, balloon shade, cloud shade, fabric roller shade, or other kind of treatment that could be shut if need be, but open most of the time....treating them identically will help make the asymmetry less noticeable, and you won't have an issue with the door.

I agree with Annie. I would avoid a panel treatment and would chose a roman shade with an inside mount. As for fabric selection, I would choose a neutral color to compliment your current trim color. A bold color will draw attention to the windows and their differences.

Lady R, what color green did you use? I really like it.

So I vote with Annie - Roman shades, either outside mount and hung from the ceiling, or inside, if you have deep enough frames to hold them.

Annie - thank you for the compliment. I will have to look at hardware to see if an inside mount will fit as the frame does look quite shallow (an excuse to go to the fabric store!)

Ratherbesewing (as would I!) - all trim, the ceiling and anaglypta paper are a cool white. When you say "neutral" do you mean to introduce another colour or keep it white or green (like the walls). I've appended a picture that includes the couch and fireplace so you can see the other colours in the room.

Elendi - I used a Benjamin Moore paint called Mountain Air (CC-636). I really like it too!

Bronwynsmom - My husband liked the idea of hanging whatever is ultimately chosen from the ceiling as well as then almost the entire window shows when they would be opened as very little light comes in as it is.
