Ceiling fan! Center in room or center with fireplace wall?
Comments (41)Super helpful conversation everyone! We're deciding between centered and off-center for a slightly different reason... we're off grid and the room in question has some large passive solar gain windows and also that's the part of the room with the highest ceiling area. Our primary use for the ceiling fan is to circulate that heated air back down into the living space in winter. We're not going to have much if any use for summer cooling (I'm writing this on April 27 and just yesterday they were enforcing snow chains on the main road to our place!) I also don't like the sensation of air blown at me by a ceiling fan because it dries out my contact lenses. So the whole purpose of the ceiling fan, really, is just for winter circulation of warm air. In that case, would people agree that we should put the ceiling fan as high up the sloped ceiling as we can and as close to the area of hot air, even though that means it won't be centered in the room? That same area will also be an "area" in terms of space layout because it's where our guests who like to be warm will likely congregate. Thanks!...See MoreShould I remove or replace this window? Comments (26)Hi Stoveguyy, The outside is boarded up where the old fireplace unit was. Can you see the concrete slab from the photo? I recently noticed that my fireplace is not even centered in the room, and cannot be moved because we added an Egress window to the basement, right underneath those 2 long windows. Can you see the well in the photo? Any ideas about a new fireplace style, or adding a window to each side? Happy Thanksgiving!...See MoreSolution for off-center window in powder room?
Comments (20)Palimpsest, as a matter of fact, I was indeed imagining some very small floating shelves a few inches deep, so very subtle, but just enough to draw attention to a different focus, just enough room for something like a little vase of dried flowers or tiny succulent. I'm definitely not talking utilitarian storage shelving. At the end of the day though, even as a huge fan of symmetry, I'm not terribly bothered by the window being off center in a powder room. It'd be fine if OP did nothing, just suggested the corner shelving because it'd be a very easy and inexpensive way to do SOMETHING about it....See MoreCeiling fan off center?
Comments (5)Thank you Patricia and Mark... we have started construction and the home is kind of a unique design because we want it to be laid out so each guest has a sense of solitude with nature and an expansive view of the sky/mountain/outdoors. So the house is in an octagonal shape with an inner courtyard and each room flares from inner to exterior both horizontally and vertically. It came out great so far, with a sense of motion from the design, but we do have this conundrum of heat stratifying up to the top of the highest point of the ceiling....See Morevioletsnapdragon
