Is there any happy 2nd FL washer owner there?

I start this thread since I hope any happy users can post their washer's brand and year of usage here so for people like me who is searching to see what to buy can benefit from here. I have tried to search for happy experiences recently and found that usually those comments are scattered inside different threads. Thanks ahead for any post.

A few years back me and the roomate purchased a Frigemore GE Profile and it was a good washer for the times. I have since moved myself and purchased the Frigidaire 2940 with matching dryer before completing the new home I live in now. To the point of the 2nd floor with that unit, it was never pleasant to do laundry because of the violent shaking and the fact it did not balance the load properly prior to spin. We have used those now one year in my brand new home off the kitchen. It was the worst mistake purchase I made in my life and so we started looking here again for advice. I think most people here get off track on threads so it becomes even harder to make the right choice, but there are some very good posts here with valid information. It was either plumb the basement for the 2940 set or keep the laundry closet on the 2nd floor. We decided not to plumb and get something else.

My gut went with the Duet Sport 8500 and after one weekend of washing say 8 loads we are impressed. The washer works on the 2nd floor period. There are many fine things about it besides. One more to add is it rinses the clothes very well without the extra rinse being used. I will not get into the dryer game on these again either. I purchased a standard dryer from whirlpool in super capacity size. I don't care for the lint filter in the door area and like it on top. The further away the lint the better and so what if you have to dust off the dryer when done. I do hear that most are happy with the Duet Sport dryers and thats great, but I will not shell out that kinda money again and not be happy with the end results. The Duet Sport washer does not twist up my jeans or anything else and the dryer no longer has to be checked 2 times each load to see if things are jammmed in the vanes. Very happy Sport owner here and thats all I can say.

I am currently in the market for a similar product, so I'm afraid this is not an experience rich response. But I can tell you that I'm looking at the Frigidaire models FTF530E (OR F) and GLTF2940E. Both washers are FL, are less than $750 and are EnergyStar rated. Lowes and Best Buy carries the FTF530 and a local appliance/electronics store carries the 2940 model. I'm leaning toward the GLTF2940 just because there are at least a couple of reviews on it and it was well liked by the users...for the most part. I will definately take the advice to keep the door ajar to avoid mildew. But the link to those reviews are below - so check it out for yourself. Good Luck on your decision! You did not mention the following: Location of the laundry in regards to the floor plan? Does the laundry area have a floor drain? Now, of course, I can't remember exactly what he said, but he didn't think there would be a vibration problem. He said the floors were not done with plywood, but instead are done with concrete backerboard (this might not be the right term). He said it is what is being used in laundry rooms now. And the floors are tile. Concrete backerboard is used as a quick means of providing a level surface for tiling as most tile contractors today are not seasoned or generationally trained so they are not good at hand floating a level surface to lay tile on. Durock is an example of concrete backerboard; these substrates are fastened to subflooring on flooring surfaces (see this link). Also, I am not sure that I understand why there would be such a big difference in vibration between a first floor that's over a basement, and a second floor? Basement walls are typically embedded in the soil so they act as dampeners and can absorb vibration. The higher you go in wood frame construction the more movement has to be accounted for in the building's engineering. This becomes even more accountable if you reside in an area with seismic considerations.

dmlove: I don't see your other thread. What is the exact title? Yes, we have the washer-left dryer-right setup. My exhaust vent is out the back wall. So I need to maintain approx 4" behind the dryer for the rigid aluminium duct to make a 90* turn at the dryer exhaust and at the wall vent. This required me to choose a dryer with no more than a total 30" depth, including the front door handle and anything sticking out of the back which would contact the duct. This requirement kept us from considering the Duet Sport dryer, or frankly any other FL washer dryer mates. I did consider modding the laundry nook so the doors where out farther, but it would have looked like a "hack". Since the washer/dryer are out of sight most of the time, we really did not mind going with a traditional, non-matching dryer which fit the nook depth. We got the Maytag MDE4608A which was half the price of the Duet Sport Dryer, but still had a 7.0 capacity, moisture sensor and drying rack. I did not see anything else in the sub $400 range with a moisture sensor and drying rack. I also liked the way the Maytag introduces heat from the back of the drum and pulls it out thru a front vent. Much like a GE in this regard. I would also note our dryer has the option of routing the exhaust vent out of either side instead of the back. As I understand your setup, you need to maintain 4" in the back of the dryer, and then raise it up so you can route the duct to the side wall vent. Correct?

I never heard of anyone having problems with a washer pan before, mine is a standard plastic one from HD (4 yrs old). I'll keep an eye one mine, I occasionally pour water on it to clean it, so we'll see. Those full access hinges are interesting. I went ahead and ordered a set for a diferent project, I'll let you know how they work. I did see some hinges that pivot and slide in like on an entertainment center (that work with a 78" door). I think the full-access hinges are a better solution and you can use standard doors with them. The only problem I can see is they may not work well if you don't have the space to open them fully (~15") on each side of the opening (look at the last page of the installation instructions). Another thing I included in my laundry closet was a door activated light. I usually install them on all closets, for some reason open doors bug me and this reminds everyone to close them. I have the Kenmore version of the Duet Sports on the 2nd floor of my 100-year old house, but haven't done enough loads to comment (it was just installed Sunday), although it seems to be pretty quiet and doesn't vibrate much, or walk at all. I will say that I was in a friend's 9th floor apartment in NYC the other day, and she has a stacked Frigidaire set that were unbelieveably quiet (almost silent).

My Asko's don't budge, nor does the floor vibrate.

The dryer shakes slighting when the washer's spin cycle starts up, but it doesn't budge from the washer, nor does the washer ever move from its spot on the floor.

They're awesome machines!

I have a stacked set of Kenmore HEs on the 3rd floor of my townhouse and I couldn't be happier. The spin cycle can get a bit noisy, but that might just be an installation issue (althought it doesn't move at all.)

All our clothes stay on this floor, as do the sheets and bath towels. Laundry is so easy when you don't have to haul huge baskets up and down stairs.

I have the bosch 500 set on my second floor on ceramic tilie floor... no vibration or movement problem to date...
