FL W/D for 2nd Home

Hello All -

I have read many of the posts to get some of the answers I am looking for. I did not see one that applied to my situation so I am posting a new message. If someone knows of an existing post, please point me to it and it would be very much appreciated.

I just bought a vacation home and need to furnish it. I am looking for a stackable FLL W/D that will be located on a second floor. Size is not that important since there are only three of us in the family. Also,we will be using this machine about a dozen or so times a year. I am not too concerned about all of the fancy features as well. Here is what is important to me: reliability and minimal vibration (since on second floor).

I have been to Lowes and Home Depot thus far. Most had features that I do not need - and thus were on the pricey end (i.e. $1600 for W/D). If that price is what I should expect to spend, than I will just bite the bullet. We have also considered top loading ( w/ or without agitator) but I currently own a Sears FLL and have been happy with the High Efficiency nature of the machine. I did see a GE (model #s DSXH47EGWW / WSSH300GWW) at Home Depot and seemed affordable. Does anyone have expereince with this one?

Any and all help would be much appreciated.

I am currently in the market for a similar product, so I'm afraid this is not an experience rich response. But I can tell you that I'm looking at the Frigidaire models FTF530E (OR F) and GLTF2940E. Both washers are FL, are less than $750 and are EnergyStar rated. Lowes and Best Buy carries the FTF530 and a local appliance/electronics store carries the 2940 model. I'm leaning toward the GLTF2940 just because there are at least a couple of reviews on it and it was well liked by the users...for the most part. I will definately take the advice to keep the door ajar to avoid mildew. But the link to those reviews are below - so check it out for yourself. Good Luck on your decision!

I think vibration can be an issue for any front loader, regardless of whether you put them on a pedestal or not. You could have a platform built, covered and faced with the same flooring you are using throughout the room, and have a small lip-- half an inch or so-- on the front so if they started to 'walk', they couldn't fall off. It would cost you the storage space in the bottom of those pedestals, though.

Cover the fireplace? Are you sure? Well, you could hide it or cover it over in a way that isn't permanent. Close the vent and try some design techniques that make the fireplace seemingly disappear. But without knowing your skill level, I'm not sure you want to try to get rid of the first floor fireplace yourself. If you really want to get completely rid of the fireplace, you'll have to look at how the fireplace ties into the structure of the home and then figure out how separate it from the second floor fireplace. I'm sure it would be quite a project, but get a hold of a contractor and ask for an initial consultation about it just so you can hear for yourself how difficult it might be. i have my duets on the 15" pedestals and i don't think i would want them any other way! they are tall enough to make putting laundry in and out comfortable, and i still put folded laundry on top.(it's only a pain when i leave folded laundry on top and i can't open the cabinets which are over them...) i can store lots of stuff in the drawers and there is no unusual vibration. my machines are on my main floor with the full basement underneath.... regularly supported floors with ceramic tile as the flooring. they are not a noise issue or vibration problem. i highly reccommend the pedestals... i'm 5'8... maybe they would be a problem for those who are very short...??? i don't have back issues, but i don't like bending over to do the laundry--- i fold right out of the dryer tho.

Thanks, Kate's. I will definitely get the pads for next washer. And will look into barn mats. Thanks We have two as well. Now the downstairs Duet sport is displaying "Sd" ...think pump needs to be cleaned... has never been done....why would they put behind panel needing to be lifted and Unscrewed! Never ends... may need TWO Washers!
