I Did It , I Did It!

I finally broke down and made Annie's salsa yesterday afternoon! Next time I am going to leave out the tomato paste and sugar, it was too sweet for our tastes and a little thicker than we like... BUT the overall flavor is perfect, just the right amount of seasoning. Howard is thrilled to have his own supply of salsa! I am going to make another batch next weekend, for gift baskets. I have friends who will inhale this stuff.

Congrats on the plantings I hope they pop beautifully for you. As far as the gloves go... make sure your clean them off well (using water is fine) let them dry the get some neatsfoot oil. That is the best thing for leather. It softens, hydrates, keeipng them soft and supple but also prevents dust & dirt from getting in the cracks ect in the future. Will definately extend the life of your gloves. Repaet as frequently as needed throughout the year to preserve them... saddle soap is just that a soap and will dry them out. melatonian is a good leather "polish" that has hydrateing features.. and I have never used coconut oil so I have no idea there. I have always used neatsfoot oil on my gloves both gardening and baseball gloves ect....

Denninmi, hi I'm also in MI and would love to try a musa basjoo, for a second time. Do you know of a good source? Even a small sprout? I bought one a couple of summers ago at Lowe's in the mid-summer, on clearance. It didn't get real big and I didn't protect it enough over the winter. I have not seen those at Lowe's again. I'll also check some local nurseries. I have palms too, that I'll be placing outside soon, they're in pots, but can't wait to try a banana again!

The sheep is precious. She loves oatmeal cookies. I was baking oatmeal cookies last weekend and had the kitchen window open and that little monster stood on the deck outside my kitchen window crying until she got a cookie! How spoiled is that! Not sure what happened to my wrist..doens't hurt it's just really swollen. When I was little my mom was ironing and I wanted the spray bottle and reached up to grab it and the iron fell on my hand burning me really bad. Later that day my mom was helping wash my hands to get ready for lunch and noticed that my hand was severely burned. The heat actually fused my pinky and ring finger together. Didn't feel a thing. I under went 4 operations to fix those fingers.

Looks great Marigene!!

I was planning on making some salsa too. And thanks for the tip on the tomato paste and sugar!

Shoot I just noticed that the Annie's recipe calls for a pressure canner which I don't have. Can't I use a BWB instead?

You can make Annie's salsa in a BWB but you have to increase the vinegar. Some people actually like that tangy version of Annie's salsa better.

So it's 1/3 cup vinegar for the PC, 1 cup vinegar for BWB. Process 15 minutes in the water bath, half-pints or pints. (Not quarts even if you do eat that much at one session!)

Very pretty Marigene-- looks just like what's sitting on my kitchen table. Tho wimp that I am I only used 2 sm jalapenos.Hubby scarfed up the 1/3 c or so from scraping the pot & declared it perfect with a bowl of corn chips.

Thanks Carol for the info on the BWB. I made a note of it in my copy of the recipe as I should be getting my tomatoes in the next week or so.

I love Annie's salsa. I have the peppers chopped and 20 pounds plus of tomatoes ready to be worked with. Now to contend with the 3 litle monsters ( add that Hayden has his days and nights mixed up) and 100+ temps expected today. But my mom is coming back up today and boy did I miss her this weekend. I am still awefully sore and the incision is still pulling and I am ready to be back to 100 percent.

Good job! I opened my last jar of the 2006 batch last week. I hope to get some good tomatoes at the farmers market or local produce stand so I can make some in the next week or so.

I am going to decrease the sugar just a tad, too. It is just so darn good!

Marigene, I often leave out the sugar, especially when my homegrown tomatoes are at their sweetest. Ashley likes it sweet, though, she's a kid. (grin) The paste was simply for the texture, I like my salsa thick and chunky.

Michelle, the first draft of the recipe called for pressure canning because I wanted to be certain the acidity level was safe enough to water bath. It took MSU several years to agree with me on the amount of vinegar needed to water bath the stuff, but they finally came through!

My cilantro is ready, I have jalapenos, the onions are ready to be pulled. Come on tomatoes, turn red! I'm down to 2 jars...
