Any suggestions for a new washer and dryer?

My family of 5 are in the market for a new washer and dryer. We currently have SpeedQueen units(Washer AWM393W, Dryer AEM497) which are approximately 13 years old. The washer works ok (my wife wants a front loader). The dryer takes forever to dry the clothes. In fact, I'm not sure much heat is generated, they must dry due to the tumbling and the passage of time.

We live in an old house where everything just barely fits into the space, including the washer and dryer. In our laundry room, the door to the dryer when opened just barely clears the laundry chute that jets out from the wall. Size is a real concern.

Here are the measurements I have taken of our current units:

Dryer 28" deep x 27" wide x 42.5" high

The dryer vent in the back takes up an extra 7.5" from dryer to the wall.

Washer 27.5" deep x 25.5" wide x 42.5" high

I am willing to spend up to $3,000 for the pair. Any suggestions concerning specific models or brands? Any help will be appreciated.

I don't have any experience with the Duet Sport, but I've heard mostly good things about them. I would purchase the 8400 model because it has the heater. If you like the Duet Sports, you may also want to check out it's siblings the Kenmore HE2t and the Maytag EpicZ as well. Hope that helps! Good luck!! :o)

Unfortunately, you have to do your homework. There are great TLs and FLs so no blanket recommendations for one or the other. To clean well you have to be able to get and maintain hot water. There has to be adequate movement of the clothes and adequate rinsing. SQ recently had to make major changes so the machines haven't been out long enough to see what they will do but from the videos, it doesn't look that good. Try to get a 2017 model as dados says. I use my machine differently than some so have to have a TL full fill machine but to the OP, read the laundry forum for lots of great info and considerations.

Check and make sure your dryer vent isn't clogged up with old lint. Not only will it keep your dryer from working it can catch on fire.

Good idea to check it every 6-12 months and clean the lint out.

Thanks for the advice. I had a chimney sweep clean the dryer vent 2 weeks ago. It was somewhat clogged, but that's not the problem. I think the heating element is shot. Instead of trying to repair it, we are getting a new dryer tomorrow. We are going with a Whirlpool Duet Sport 8300. We are also trahing the old washer and replacing it with a Duet 9300. This was not our first choice.

I will start a new thread with our nightmare experience with the LG Tromm dryer which started on fire after installation this afternoon. This was the 2nd attempt to deliver the dryer (the washer was back-ordered). Yesterday the installer said the dryer didn't sound right so he was going to get us another. Needless to say my wife and I lost any confidence we had with LG. Hence the Whirpool units. Wish us luck for our delivery tomorrow.
