Cheap Frigidaire FL? Of TL for stack

As I posted before, I need a one piece stack unit. This doesn't leave much to choose from. I probably wouldn't mind buying stackable units, but then that puts you into the more expensive FL's. I live by myself and don't have fine clothes to wash. Just the typical single male stuff, with the typical single male outlook and approach to doing laundry.

Of the one piece stack units there is the Maytag Legacy with a TL washer, which is what I had and lasted for 20 years. The other choice is a Frigidaire stack unit. This comes with either a TL washer or their bottom of the line, entry level, opp, whatever you want to call it, FL. This is the 3.2 (?) with the little door on it. It is a very basic machine.

Since Maytag has gone to pot in recent years, I'm a little leary of buying the Legacy model. Even though I haven't read about that many problems with it. The Netune on the other hand seems to be a machine that they should just quit selling.

The Frigidaire a don't know anything about. The sales lady at a local dealer said she takes most of the service calls at the store and didn't remember when the last time was that she had a call on the Frigidaire units. This store does the service work for the nearby Lowes and HD.

I wouldn't mind buying the Frigidaire stack with the FL washer if it is as dependable as the TL unit.

So, out of the three choices, The maytag legacy, the frigidaire tl, or the frigidare FL, which do you think would provide the best dependability?

Front Loaders ARE generally more trouble prone and a bit fussier to use. So, if you like the the simplicity of a top loader the Frigidaire TL "Laundry Center" stack would be the one to choose.

My vote would be for the Frigidaire front loader for the following reason:
the 3.1 tub will hold more laundry and get it cleaner and do it gentler than an agitator washer...your jeans will last longer. It also uses less water and energy.

I had this 3.1 FL washer for years before giving it to my son along with the matching dryer. I had it installed side by side, but my son stacked it and put it in a small closet where a T/L stack set was previously. It is now 7 years old running great, no repairs.

I recently bought an Affinity 6000 washer and dryer pair and unfortunately have had nothing but trouble with the washer. Every time the washer starts to speed up to spin the load, the control panel blinks off immediately and the power recycles, stopping the spin. Other times, the washer will simply shut off in mid wash and will not power back on for a half hour or more. I've already had sevice out to replace the control board (which foolishly is located in the BACK of the washer making it necessary to pull the entire unit out if you have it stacked in a closet as I do). I ran a load of laundry right after the service guy left and SURPRISE! Still having the same exact problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem or heard anything about it? I'm waiting to hear what the service people are going to try next... Based on this experience, I'd be a little leary of going with this model (I have an older model in another house that's been working like a charm for 2 years).

Miele, Asko and Bosch all make washers and dryers that will fit under a standard 36" counter height. These machines conform to European standards, so are somewhat smaller than washers and dryers manufactured in N. America for the American market, but all will accommodate a wash load similar in size to a standard American top-loader. All of these washers and dryers can be stacked with their matching counterpart. From Miele, any models in the W3000 series would fit under a standard 24" deep counter. The model W1203 would also fit under a standard height counter, but would require a deeper counter as the model W1203 is 4" deeper from front to back than the series W3000 machines. Alas, Miele seems to be in transition on available model numbers, so it's a bit confusing, but machines sized to European standards remain in the model line-up. Your Miele dealer can advise you on model availability. From Asko, as far as I know, any laundry pair would fit under a standard height and depth counter. From Bosch, any of the models in the Axxis line would fit under a standard height and depth counter. I have an older Miele laundry pair sized the same as the W3000 series machines. They are installed under standard counters and look just as "built-in" as a dishwasher. Folding on a standard height counter presents no problems, whatever.

The standard recommended dose of Wisk HE (to the first line of the cap) is 1 oz. That's equivalent to 2 tablespoons (four tablespoons = 1/4 cup, which is 2 oz.). Running a load of queen-size sheets (fitted, flat, & three pillow cases), I used 2 tablespoons at the start. The EcoActive wash phase had "slippery" water and a slight bit of sudsing. The deep wash phase filled to the medium/low water level. Checking the water, it was just on the fringes of being slippery, but not quite enough. I added more Wisk HE, one teaspoon at a time. Two more teaspoons got the water feeling about right. Three teaspoons is equivalent to one tablespoon. So 2-2/3 tablespoons of triple-concentrated Wisk HE is the proper dosage for a lightly soiled load at medium-low water level in my F&P toploader (at approximately 11 grains water hardness). Of course, regular (not triple-concentrated) powdered or liquid detergents would need correspondingly more. This is the sheets at medium-low water level. To illustrate the difference, this is high water level. Doesn't seem likely 2-2/3 tablespoons would be sufficient. People who are using minuscule amounts of detergent and getting good results may have softened water, or are running small loads. Either way, follow whatever dosing and procedures work for you!

I have a Frigidaire (Kenmore 2003 FridGEmore) set stacked, in a small utility room (larger than yours, however) near the back door, on a wooden floor over a crawl space. I do not have any special plywood layer on the floor. I don't have any problems with excessive vibrations. I'm not going to tell you that there are no vibrations or noises at all, but I don't have any banging, house falling down, (whatever other horror stories you have heard) vibrations. My old Top Loader vibrated and made noises, and the FL is much quieter. The sounds the FL make are DIFFERENT than the sounds a TL makes. I often suspect that is why some new FL owners complain about FL vibration and noise: 1) They are paying close attention, now that they have this new-fangled washer. 2) Over the years, they became very accustomed to the sounds their TL made and just learned to "tune" them out. They probably haven't paid attention to the TL sounds and vibrations for years, and sort of forget that the TL does make noises and has it's own type of vibration issues. Most importantly, make sure your Frigidaire FL is properly leveled. I know there are threads on this forum that give instructions on how to balance a FL. Some have recommended doing so while the FL is spinning, to get the best "attunement" as it were. Your utility room floor is attached and stabilized by the nearby outer wall. If you can get into the crawl space, you can install additional supports under the floor by using something similar to the deck block below. We have a 5 1/2 yo cheap Frigidaire FL - stacked with matching dryer. These perform like champs on beach towels, queen bedding sets, sandy, salty mildewed things w/o a bit of trouble! High volume & heavy funk! Love these machines! No problems with mildew or malfunctions (unlike the recently replaced Maytag Neptunes at main house) - house came with a single unit ( with TL washer) which was too small for our needs - couldn't wash more than a couple of towels or a single sheet (not fitted & flat together). Not interested in wasting that much time or water!

just checked - ours are the Gallery line - can't say enough good things about them! Not as intensely effective as the new Bosch's at home but these Frigidaires have been trouble free & work horses for us!

I have the frididaire FL washer myself. I am a single guy, I have very few fine clothes, and mostly dress casual for work. I can tell you that they are more gentle on your clothes and use far less water. I have a 2 unit house where I pay the water for both, but I'm the only one doing laundry there and I have never seen a monthly water bill over $25.00 I have had no problems with it either. mine are not a single unit. the washer and dryer are seprate units. I would not buy the one peice unit. you can get stackable seprates. that are better than the one piece unit. this way if you move or remodel there are other install options.
