How much clearance needed for cabinets above washer/dryer suite?

I have exactly 54" from the floor to the bottom lip of the cabinets above where my washer/dryer outlets are. It seems like most of the FL laundry suites I'm considering have washers around 38" high and if I get pedestals, it will be 15.5" extra. Together, that is 53.5" and only 0.5" below my cabinets. I wonder if it's just too little clearance. Obviously, the FL and dryer doors are in the front of the unit, so my concern is more with air circulation (if necessary?) and other unanticipated issues.

If it were you, would you just go with TL instead to avoid the height clearance issue?

check the mfgrs installation requirements for specific info, but think about this: stackable units have NO air circulation above the lower unit of the two. :)

I'd do EVERYTHING I could to avoid using a TL. seriously.
If it were me, I'd not worry about the small clearance, but of course the units should be installed LEVEL and for that there may be issues when the legs are adjusted...

Mine have 1.25" between the cabinet and top of washer. That's just how it happened to work out. As Dave mentioned there should be specs on how much clearance, as they install units under countertops. You can shop for units that will fit or if you have one you specifically want, just build a custom pedestal to the height you need.

My cabinet measures 53" and what I did was find an actual set sitting on the pedestals and measured the units. It seems like when they attach the pedestals there is also some leeway since they remove the washers feet to attach the pedestal. And like you I was getting very little clearance when I would add the numbers. So I wanted to be sure they would actually fit.

I've been using FL for decades with no issues so I would never go back. The only issue I have is when I forget to push the button to turn it on! I seem to have the same issue with the dishwasher.

So even though we have some of the best and easiest supplied water in our area, we also have high water rates. With the Feds putting stricker regulations on our water supply I can only foresee the rates continuing to rise. Personally, I feel my FL washes better plus I don't have to spend extra money{{gwi:9241}} for water and sewer. So I would not recommend buying a top loader for that reason, or if you have a septic system.

Would you want to use the tops of the machines for folding or laundry prep, or would they be too high? Our original refrigerator had about 2 or 3 inches of clearance before the trim for the cupboard above. We needed to replace it, and the trim board had to be cut down as new refrigerators seem to be taller. So, you could have a flexible situation like we did with some trim between the top of the machines and the cupboard and that could always be removed to allow more room in the future if you buy bigger machines. I think you would want an inch or so of room to allow for air exchange around the machines, etc.

Every stack is different, but you are right in saying 6" is SQ's requirement for this unit. I expect SQ would void the warranty if anything went wrong. I am getting ready to install the electric version, hopefully next week. (See thread titled Emergency Choice on SQ.) We have a half shelf above, but at least 12" of wide open clearance behind and above that. Additionally we are adding a dryer booster fan in the attic to draw the heat off faster and speed drying times. In an enclosed and tight space such as a closet, especially if you have a door on it, I would be concerned about the heat of this unit unless I could add an exhaust booster. But I see that you are (I'm guessing) in Manhattan, and may not have access to the space above you? If not, I wouldn't try it. And even with the booster, they might try to void your warranty just on a technicality if a problem came up. I recently used a GE apartment stack in a vacation house and I liked it tremendously well. It might be better suited to your installation. Good luck.

I'm not a contractor, but whether things can be changed after rough in would probably depend on how it's plumbed and if it's sitting on slab or basement or what. Assuming you don't somehow have gas and/or water coming up from slab that would have to be dramatically changed, it should be feasible. I've re-routed plumbing and electric to move from a side by side to stacked laundry setup in a finished house without issue. Would not have been a problem to go back to side by side either. You definitely want washer on the left or you may also have washer and dryer doors banging into each other and damaging one another. I like the side by side a bit better, mostly because it's easier to scoop laundry left to right than it is down to up. Though maybe it was better for my glutes to have stacked since I had to constantly squat then stand to transfer laundry from washer to dryer...

We’ve demoed our bathroom and plan on putting the washer dryer in the space shown in the picture. Its a 40” deep x 90” wide space. The washer/dryer we’re getting are 33” deep and 27” wide. Our initial plan was finding flipper closet doors. But hafele seems to be the only seller. And its like $1500 per hinge not including $1000 per custom door. Then do a floor to ceiling 30” closet on the left. Washer in the middle. Dryer on the right. So then we thought about getting a three stacked closet door that ran 90”. 30” doors each. But then we would be sacrificing the use of one of the 30” spaces at all times. The closet space on the left would constantly be blocked by the doors if we did laundry. But then we saw cabinet doors that had flipper hinges. And figured thats the best solution for us. We’d get a basic 40” deep x 90” wide countertop and mount it an 1” above the washer dryer. And just look for 30” cabinet doors and 3 sets of hinges. And maybe install upper wall cabinets for additional storage.

I went to a local big box store and they didn't have the pedestals, but the associate just added the specs off the website and it's an 1" too tall. So I'm looking at another model that's 3/4" shorter, which means only shaving 1/4" off the cabinets (with a sander?).

I have had a Frigidaire (made by Electrolux in Atlanta) FL for the past 11 years and like it very much. I toyed with the idea of getting a Speed Queen, but I'm not ready to go back to a TL. Thanks all.
