install cabinets exactly above washer /dryer?

I am getting a pair of front loaders and pedestals. we are going to put wall cabinets above. I have seen so many pictures of an almost built in look with cabintry all around the pair. I would like to put the cabinets right down close to them so I can reach things better, but DH says that doesn't seem smart...I see his point, but...if theres a problem, you would just pull them straight out, right? Does it work in pics but not good in real life? What do you all think?

Would you want to use the tops of the machines for folding or laundry prep, or would they be too high?

Our original refrigerator had about 2 or 3 inches of clearance before the trim for the cupboard above. We needed to replace it, and the trim board had to be cut down as new refrigerators seem to be taller. So, you could have a flexible situation like we did with some trim between the top of the machines and the cupboard and that could always be removed to allow more room in the future if you buy bigger machines.

I think you would want an inch or so of room to allow for air exchange around the machines, etc.

Thanks Sheila. I had a hard time deciding between the washer/dryer without the pedestals - so I could fold on top - or go with the pedestals so I didn't have to bend over so much. I got the pedestals so they will be a little too high to fold on top. Thankfully I have a little bit of room to put a counter on the other wall. Anyway, I guess DH is just thinking of a problem with the dryer venting or whatever else "happens" on the back. We won't be able to stretch up and look behind anyway though bec of the height of the pair.

. . into a pantry?? My utility room is just off my kitchen. I'm getting a new washer and dryer and am considering FL w/ pedestals. This would allow my to use the bank of cabinets above my WD for a pantry and let me "re-claim" the closet that I'm now using for a pantry. Any issues with moisture/heat to be concerned about?? Thanks!!

I suppose it's possible that 0" of clearance would work if you don't have to have any cords, water lines or venting out the back. Otherwise, I don't see that as being possible. Will the doors warp? Depends on the material and construction. Many people here have commented that either they need extra deep cabinets or the washer and dryer will stick out from standard cabinets from a few inches. Sounds like it's the same issue for you. Another thought. If you can have it perfectly lined up you could certainly have a nice short straight shot out for the vent. Would certainly maximize the drying efficiency as far as venting. But when you think about the size of the vent, if you have to run it and elbows, you'll need some space. Also keep in mind if you ever have to replace the dryer you probably won't have the exact same measurements and keep in mind facilitating access for repairs and maintenance. There are some "periscope" rectangular units that might save a bit of space. Is it really a problem to have it come out a few inches? Or could you make the surrounding cabinets all a bit deeper?

The laundry is going to be in our newly-renovated master closet/dressing room (no other place...they are now in garage!). Original plan was to have them in a closet, but then the doors to the closet would always be hanging open, impeding access to the rest of the room, etc., so we are planning to have them set off in an "alcove", but no doors. So, since this is mostly "my" space, I don't want the washing machines just hanging out there, looking utilitarian, and with all the associated junk that would be left on top of the machines, etc.. We've gone from putting a countertop over them and upper cabinets, to the idea of having them in cabinetry (but no door on the front of the cabinetry, so the machines will still be accessible (at the front, at least), for a "semi-built-in" look. Contractor plans to put emergency shut-offs, etc. in the upper cabinet (above the hole where the washer/dryers will sit) so we'd still have access to that in case of emergency (and will have pan) with drain for possible leaks.

In our first house, the washer/dryer was next to the kitchen in a small mudroom. The builder put the same cabinets from the kitchen right into the mudroom. When we moved in, we put closet doors in front of them and never had any problems. I'm going to use my current cabinets in my laudry room once our demo gets started. I think they'll look great for a laundry room.
