Provincial Style has transcended decades. There is no way of knowing if the couch you speak of is from the 40s the 70s or even the 90s without seeing it.

The price sounds good and it sounds like you gave it a close inspection as to it's construction and overall condition.

The style could lend itself to an eclectic decor. You have a very good eye for that sort of thing. Use your instincts. It sounds like you feel you have found "the one". Can you post a pic of it for a better summation? The devil is in the details. Even though you say the photo of the one you linked to is similar it may have some character flaw in it, that would make it difficult to blend into the vision you have for your cottage home. A small difference between two pieces, like one having carved acorns and the other having carved roses, are sometimes 'make or break' details.

Unfortunately the store is about a 1/2 hour away and I didn't have my camera with me when I stopped in, so I don't have an exact picture.

The wood work is the *exact same* as that sofa though. Same stain color and it's very simple, not a lot of carvings. I'd be surprised if they weren't made by the same manufacture. The fabric is a med - light blue, with greens running through it .. It's hard to describe, it was kind of 'watery looking' for lack of better description. The fabric wouldn't probably be to everyone's liking, but I thought it was different and kind of neat.

I'd say middle 50's based on its similarity to my sofa that belonged to my parents. Ours had a tufted back until I had it reupholstered.

Thank you for posting your picture Mona and helping me pin some kind of a date on this sofa. Your sofa looks beautiful, I think I like the back even better without the tufting.

After non-stop obsessing over the sofa half the day, I asked my DH if he'd go grab it with the truck for me. I figure if I don't like the upholstery after a while, this might be the first project I try. I spent a while yesterday at the library and checked out 5 books on the subject.

Here it is .. I'll admit it's probably not most people's idea of neat, but I think it will work out here fine and I can work with it. I like the colors and the fabric/wood is in amazing shape .. hey for $150, I think it's kind of fun. :)

It's sitting in the hall right now, because I wanted to see it against the green. It actually looks must better IRL than in the pics.

You got a great deal for $150. It looks like good solid maple furniture from the 40s-50s, and like the other example piece you showed, it looks like it has the original upholstery in excellent condition.

I can't wait to see how it gets worked into the room. The piece is truly unique.

OOOOOOHHHH, it's the best of both worlds. It's got those great French Provincial lines, but with funky, retro-looking fabric. I love it.

I'm not a fan of this style of furniture but I think you got an amazing bargain and this sofa looks much better than the first one you posted of a similar-looking piece. It seems to be in excellent shape and for that price you don't have to agitate about the kids and the dogs being on it. I really like the color and it will be very interesting to see how you decorate around it. It could lend itself very well to the style of decor you have in mind. I'm glad you decided to follow your instincts; it was obvious you really liked it, and what could be more important? I think a few appropriate pillows will really dress it up.

I couldn't picture the lines of the first sofa working in a cottage environment, but once I saw the fabric I totally got it. The fabric has a sort of relaxing feel to it. I look forward to seeing your room. :)

Hmmmm. Looks a lot like my sofa my mom gave me a few months ago. I've wondered how old it is because she had no idea. Of course, that's not the original fabric.

Reno .. I thought the fabric was kind of cool too. I think for someone to truly like this sofa, they have to 'embrace' the retro -'ness' of the fabric. *LOL* It's totally not everyone's cup of tea. I wish I could get a better picture, I've tried .. it looks much better in person than in the photo, I think I'd need a better camera and lighting though to convey it.

CooperBailey, I think the sofa is comfortable to sit on and hang out on for a period of time, it's actually very roomy and can easily fit me and the three girls comfortably on it. I don't find the tufting part uncomfortable on my back, I know that it bothers some people. I read a lot and I think the sofa would be plenty comfortable to hang out on with a good book.

Now with that being said, I'm not sure most people would find it comfortable enough for a TV room that's used a whole lot. Where you'd want a large, cushy sofa to sink into. That's most likely where the sofa will be going here, but we honestly don't watch a whole lot of TV. The girls stay really busy with sports, after school clubs and playing with friends. If it's half way decent outside and they are home .. they're outside playing. If it's raining, we normally have a whole troop of kids upstairs, they have a huge TV up there to watch. About the only TV my DH and I watch are a movie or two at night on the weekends. So I think this sofa will work out just fine for us.
