Yes, I've been socializing again, and guess who came to Michigan?

Yes, that's my dear friend, lpinkmountain! She's originally a Michigan girl and her heart is still here, even if the rest of her is in Pennsylvania!

Anyway, the purpose of her visit was to visit family members, and so that was paramount during her time here, but she made time to have breakfast with me on Sunday morning. I wished I had known she was coming, I would have picked extra blueberries so she could have some fresh. Instead, I took some out of the freezer, they'd only been frozen about 3 days, LOL, and I made Ann T's scones. I took half a dozen to L:

I also took her a jar of Melanie's Black Forest syrup, delightful on vanilla ice cream or pound cake, and a jar of dilled green beans. The "ladies" sent her a dozen fresh eggs too.

She brought me a jar of homemade strawberry/mint jam, something I haven't tried making yet and it sounds yummy.

We went to a local diner, Rosie's. It's been on the Travel Channel and on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. It's the diner that was used on all the Bounty paper towel commercials with Nancy Walker mopping up those spills as Rosie.

I had eggs and hashbrowns:

L had their special, cobblestone french toast. They make the bread there, and it has apples, walnuts, cinnamon. It's dunked into the egg batter and fried, very yummy:

A couple of hours flew by and we drank a lot of coffee before she had to start back on that long drive. Don't think I won't be visiting her in Pennsylvania someday, making her give me the tour of Philadelphia!

Hurry back home, L, we miss you.

It's only about a 20 hour drive.

Greetings from the PA road! I am slogging my way back to my home in exile, stopping along the way to work, virtually. A few hours sleep, then another long drive to try and make a lunch meeting for my other job. Some vacation! BUT, I did get to see one of my favorite MI redheads! (the other one being my mom, who is actually silver now). I was unfortunately kinda fried by some family stuff, so I zoned out and didn't think to take a picture of Annie. She looked MARVELOUS BTW. I haven't seen her in person since Elery, and I must say marriage agrees with her, she just glows. Or maybe she was having a hot flash, I dunno!

I had take-home french toast this morning reheated before I hit the road, and I'm having a scone as a bedtime treat. Yes, they taste as good as they look. Actually they taste BETTER than they look because those are no ordinary blueberries, they are MICHIGAN blueberries! Bumper crop this year was the word on the street.

Annie I miss ya, which is why I could hardly drag myself away. It was a perfect MI day, I was, as Annie said, "the earliest I'd ever been late" and I had driving and a discussion with my parents about their estate waiting for me afterwards. And those of you who have done that know what I'm talking about, and those of you who don't, I have three words--fingernails on chalkboard. Annie was so sweet to listen to me vent. But we are both chips off dad's shoulders, and I know Ms. Annie misses hers, I think we all do as he was practically a virtual member here.

Rosie's diner rocks! If you're ever up Rockford MI way, you've got to check it out. And between my Annie haul and the stash I got from my gardening goddess cousins, I will be in food heavan for at least a week. In addition to farm fresh eggs and scones and canned good, I have maple syrup from my cousin's sugarbush, cabbage, beets, green and yellow beans, green pepper and some sea salt. (My cousins took pity on me and gave me some to try).

And I managed to also swing a Lake perch dinner two nights before. And a swim in my Lake as the sun was setting. But the CF buzz was mighty fine. And y'all are off the hook, I groused (you know the word I really mean) so much about my family we didn't talk about hardly ANY of you! ;)

Boskoop was the #1 cooking apple when I was growing up in Switzerland, I still have a soft spot for this cultivar, because these were magnificent trees, picking in my teens on a nice sunny fall day high up on a ladder, I never forget! A good size tree could yield about 2 tons. Also, picking these lovely, red blush, kind of rough skin, which made it better for picking, not slipping out of your hands. We had some stored in the root cellar, in about May, the skin would have shrivelled up but the flesh was still good. OH...another thing I got to tell you... When my mom was baking pies in the wood oven, [farm house] we kids took one of the Boskoop and wrapped the whole apple with dough and backed it along with pies......you get it!...Awesome! What a great market, Maureen. Believe it or not, Midwest Living magazine did a piece on Cleveland (I think last month) and specifically mentioned that market as a destination, I promptly told Elery we needed to go. So now I have a real "review", so I really want to go! Your pot/vase will be home with me tomorrow. Elery's son, Ben, has a friend who makes some great pottery and Elery wanted to be sure that he saw it. Ben was appropriate impressed, so thank you so much, it's a lovely gift. And that's why the picture was so good. Elery took it, LOL. So you think the blur makes us look younger? Oh good, tell Dick that if his isn't blurry and we look older, don't post that one, just skip over it. (grin) Maureen, Lpink is originally from Michigan, right over by The Lake about 40 miles from me, so Cleveland is probably similar to her Michigan climate. She's even used to Lake Effect so I doubt Cleveland could throw much at her that she couldn't take. Well, at least in the way of weather... In fact, she missed Mother Nature's testing of the equipment Sunday. It was sunny and 55F, then it hailed, it thundered, we got some lightning, 60 mph wind gusts and then it dropped to 31f and snowed. I think the Mother's weather equipment is all in working order now, at least here in Michigan. Oh, and I canned 21 quarts and 10 pints of sauerkraut, too late to bring you any. And 7 jars of Habanero Gold. Be sure to tell Dick. I'm not going to be charitable, since he outfished me. (grin) Annie

Annie, it was great seeing you again. One note: the peppers are marinaded and work really well in one of our favorite chicken dishes, a Giambota. Just brown some bird, place in a roasting pan, dump the pepper and some onions, mushrooms, and quartered potaotes. SPrinkle Italian herbs and garlic and douse with balsamic vinegar. Bake until the chicken is done, about 45 minutes and serve. Give Elery a hug from me, and next time lets make it a longer visit.

Cathy, we were thinking about you, and agreed that next time we'll try to plan far enough in advance to have you come along, we missed you. Lars, when you do come to Michigan, we'll definitely have to have a get together, either here or in Chicago or SOMEWHERE, we can't let you come this far and not meet everyone! writersblock, the crust is a mixture of a one pound bag offrozen hash brown potatoes, one egg and salt and pepper. I press it into a buttered springform pan, mine is a 9 inch, and then add the filling and bake. My oldest daughter is celiac, so I'm getting better at gluten free cooking, even for other people, LOL. stir_fryi, that's my Grandma's recipe and the trick is to not overbake or they get crisp, like gingersnaps instead of staying chewy. The recipe was been very popular here over the last few years, then kind of dwindled away. Here it is, my favorite cookie since I was a child. Chewy Molasses Cookies (Annie CF) 1 1/2 cups of shortening (I use half and half with butter, but all butter makes them too crispy for my taste) 1 cups granulated sugar 1 cup dark brown sugar 2 eggs 3/4 cup of dark molasses 4 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 4 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 teaspoons ginger 1 teaspoon ground cloves Chopped crystalized ginger, optional, to taste. I used about half a cup, finely chopped and wish I'd have used more but I love ginger Coarse sugar or turbinado sugar for rolling Cream the shortening and sugars. Add the molasses and eggs and mix until well blended. Sift the flour (yeah right, I don't, LOL) and measure 4 1/2 cups into a separate bowl. Add the spices, salt, and baking soda and whisk to combine. Turn the mixer to low or stir, and add the flour slowly until well mixed. Stir in the chopped ginger and chill the dough for at least an hour. After the dough has chilled for an hour, roll tablespoonfuls of the dough into balls and roll the balls in the coarse sugar to completely coat. Place the dough balls about an inch apart on a greased or parchment-lined cookie sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes in a 350 degree oven. The cookies will puff up and crack. When the cookies are done the cracks should still look a little wet, but the outside should look dry. They'll "fall" a little as they cool, let them sit a couple of minutes on the sheet before you try to move them to cooling racks. Peppi, we love having Emma and you here, and your Dad too. All I have to do is find a "babysitter" for the dogs, the cows, the horses and the chickens and we'll be right there! (grin) And, as Peppi mentioned, we had beef stew the first night. Maybe not special company food, but something that could sit in the oven and give me some time to visit instead of "hands on". I did use a Porterhouse, a Sirloin and two Rib steaks, so it was kind of special... Annie

Hey Pink! You certainly look great. And yes I know about Estate talk...`sigh`. I'm so sorry that we all have to go through that kind of 'talk'. Good news is though that you are able to have that talk with your Dad.

You are a busy bee these days. Traveling for work gives you an opportunity to see some of the country that most of us will never see. I just love taking off in a car and going till I have to stop. It's really better if someone else is driving though.

Thanks for sharing Annie! It's good to see friends and hear what is going on in their lives. The scones, food and friends look so good!

Lpink, that is a very nice picture of you. Nice picture of your french toast, too!

Glad to hear that you two had a chance to catch up and that Lpink could vent a bit. I've had the "estate plan" conversation with my mom. Thank heavens she is realistic about it all and it wasn't hard.

I hope you weren't driving through those horrible storms we had on Sunday. What a mess.

It sounds like a wonderful visit. LPink, I don't envy you all that driving, but at least I bet it was scenic.

Waving hi! Looks like a yummy restaurant, glad you enjoyed another meal out, Annie (darfc).

We had the estate 'talk' AND got it on videotape as well. We've seen too many vindictive relatives gumming up even the most seemingly airtight wills/trusts.

Thanks for sharing pictures and notes on your visit. I am seriously shy about putting my photo online, but I have to confess that it's really nice to have a face to match up to a name. Lpink looks very near how I imagined her, too!

The food looked great. I will take a meal at a great breakfast spot over a fancy dress-up dining restaurant most any day! I'd love to try that one -

Cathy, I didn't choose the tapas place, that was Sherry's pick. It WAS a very interesting way to eat lunch and it let me have a little bite of this and a little bite of that, so I liked it.

Woodie, yes, I was a redhead last time she saw me too. Heck, I've been a redhead for a couple of years now!

Well Pink, you seem to be making the rounds. I'm thinking you were jammin' with Alex last month. Sorry to hear about the family challenges but I'm glad you had the chance to meet up with the Annie. Breakfast looks great...I LOVE dinners!

If I'm not mistaken our waitress was moderately hot, but she was female so not really my type.

Annie you're forgetting how long it's been. You were a blonde. A long haired blonde, (well neck length anyway). Wonderweiner was still around last time I visited. You had a dog but no husband. Now you kinda have both don't you?

Great and I heard great things about Lpink from Alexa yesterday...:-) Maybe I'll have to visit her next time I am in PA to get some expert canning help - Lord knows I need it!
