Still staying dry here
Comments (1)I think it might be coming your way yet. We got over an inch in south Joplin but there is still a big storm front coming. It chased me home from work, I decided I didn't want to be in the greenhouse with thunder and lightning! Sandy...See MoreWho's still here?
Comments (15)i'm new here too and i have a new garden in a new place i also have two new hip replacements (actually one is 2 yrs old and the other is about 10 weeks old) i live south of houston texas so i should be able to garden throughout the year problems i'm facing besides lack of agility are deer-at least a million of them -- who stroll through yards in herds upwards of 20 and eat everything in sight....almost they even eat 35 year old live oak trees (hanging branches) other big problem is rain and i mean lots of it, gumbo (very sticky hard clay) and forthcoming are the swarms of mosquitoes and heat (it doesn't cool down much at night here) should i stop now i think i'm so addicted i can't.... in november we transplanted 2 citrus, a mandarin orange and a 20 year old meyers lemon wh o had been in a pot all it's life we added expanded shale and raised bed soil and the old plant has been blooming since mid december, the mandarin orange had a huge bloom cycle about a month ago (early march) and then dropped all leaves and the tips of some branches are dying i don't like the looks of it maybe just too much rain.......anyway i've added a new meyer lemon and a rio red grapefruit and they appear to be doing well since i also have to be so selective about which plants i can use because of the deer and i love bees and butterflies i've added the following about a dozen types of salvia, butterfly weed, lantana, dill, fennel, basil, parsley, and a small bay tree, lemon balm, rosemary, chives, mexican mint marigold, thyme, cuphea, poinciana, and some accidental berry vines and some containerized mint and some tomatoes i also have some endless summer hydrangeas, a banana shrub and 2 camellias so far the deer have walked up and sniffed a few times and turned and walked away, i hope that continues i'm planting in two raised beds and have plans for several more (trees are not in the two beds ) the lot is close to 5 acres but i'm trying to keep my gardening down to maybe an 8th of an acre i love the look of a kitchen garden and hope to hear what everyone is planting and "see their efforts" (unfortunately we are living in the dark ages at our house and have only trac phones which we rarely use, so i can't post photos yet........See MoreYou're always here...
Comments (10)One of my sisters decided to contact 5 people per day, via call, email, or text. She’s heard back from over 150 people. Everyone was so glad to hear from her and connect or reconnect. My Mum decided to call 5 church members a week. She started by focusIng on those who live alone, like she does. She’s had wonderful chats with everyone. Most people won’t initiate contact but are so happy to receive it. My SIL was complaining about being lonely so I told her about the above what-I-consider-success stories. She claims she does call a few friends but since she’s single more people should be contacting her first. Ok then, sit home and be lonely or extend yourself an inch and contact people you already know. 🤷🏼♀️ Maybe I should ask my Mum and sister to contact my SIL. 😆 I’d invite her to hang out here because it is such a nice atmosphere but she’d just harsh my mellow. 😬...See MoreI know you're not doctors but I'd still like your opinion
Comments (28)It looks better this morning.......the red is fading. So all is good. All is well. Now you don’t need to do anything else. The pharmacist would likely recommend otc hydrocortisone, topical Benadryl, and other anti itch topicals. When I got stung by a bee when dead heading a marigold bloom, I remembered a remedy told by my mom about turmeric, so I immediately ran back inside and made a paste of turmeric powder, then applied & gently massaged on to the affected area between my thumb and forefinger. 30 minutes later, the swelling and pain were nearly gone. An hour later it was like nothing happened there. From there on I use this remedy for insect bites. I always have a turmeric powder bottle on my spice shelf to use occasionally in some dishes. Turmeric powder is also used to reduce arthritis pain and inflammation when taken internally. Several years ago, The People’s Pharmacy talk show discussed an arthritis remedy using this powder. I referred to this talk show and recommended it to a dear friend’s mom who had arthritis pain in her arm/shoulder joint. She took a teaspoon every night and it started working for her in a few weeks. She has taken it every night ever since. When I had a surgery on my jaw bone, I took turmeric powder, along with using ice pack. Worked well to control inflammation without taking ibuprofen which often does not go well with my stomach. Can you see how much I like turmeric powder. That said, people must consult with their doctor or pharmacist if they want to take turmeric while on certain prescription drugs or under a treatment regimen....See More- 12 years ago
