Raise your hand if you're STILL not done planting out

...not counting spring/summer-sowing after say June 1st.

I still have Zinnias, marigolds, dianthus, ruds, a lone canary vine (where the heck am I going to put THAT?!)...all tolled about 20 containers left. Again, not counting the 10 or so that I've sown recently.

This morning, I got up at 10 past 6 (gotta leave NLT 710 or so for work), and decided that the canteloupe simply couldn't wait til I got home, so I got that container of about 16 plants out- phew! Took about 25 minutes (had to cut holes in the black plastic, dig little holes with a spoon...etc) to do the container, and I made it to work on time with a shower, too!

Please tell me I'm not the only one still planting out in mid-June!

Yeah I was up at 5:30 am, make the pot-o-coffee, wnet out and pruned some iris,cut back the now 6ft tall golden glow pulled more weeds, walked back in the house to get a refill of coffe and work called..so nope didn't get to do any planting before work this morning.
I still have zinnias, more marigolds, rose campion, coneflower, more tunias, impatiens, lilrope, daylily seedlings and want to get more squash seed out in the places the DS'd seeds didn't pop up.
Have to get out the cauliflower and broccoli for the fall crop also

I'm raising both hands (and feet too)! I have so much stuff, both perennials and annuals, to plant out, it's daunting ...

And I have to get my Sweet William and biennial salvia sown for next year. Never did get around to sowing marigolds and melampodium.

Heeheehee - I agree with you Ezzirah. Often the stores, like the big box stores for instance, are more of a problem because they don't take care of the plants well at all! I try to catch them early in the year when the plants are just coming off the truck to grab them. I buy herbs like Lavendar, Rosemary, and Bay that are said to be difficult to grow from seed. I've never actually tried to grow them from seed because it seems like such an effort in futility, taking a long, long, time to grow to any substantial size. Bay in particular is very slow growing and is often more expensive to purchase because of that. It is not hardy in the ground in Oklahoma and must be brought inside during the winter. Use care when purchasing Rosemary, too. There are hardy varieties such as 'Arp', which is the hardiest. 'Madeline Hill' and 'Hill Hardy' are other hardy varieties, but if conditions aren't just right, they are questionable. So beware if you buy locally. The one I see most often marketed here is 'Tuscan Blue'. While it might make it thru a mild winter, it is really only hardy to zone 8. I buy tuberous or bulbing plants, too, rather than growing from seed, because not only do the plants generally put most of their energy into growing their tubers or bulbs, they often take a long time to reach flowering size for that reason; sometimes a year and sometimes many years. I'm not saying you can't grow the plants I mentioned from seed, because you can. They're just a little more finicky to start from seed and they take a little longer to have any impact in your garden. Larry, whatever it takes for a person to be happy, I'm all for it. I don't know too many of us that wants to change once we reach a certain age and are used to doing things the way we have done for a long, long time. Count me among them, too! Susan

You can start peppers and eggplants inside now. You probably would be OK starting tomatoes now and transplanting them outside in late April. For everything else that can be grown from transplants, look at the spring planting date for your part of the state, and start your seeds 3 to 5 weeks prior to that planting date, with 3 weeks being ideal. THE FALL GARDEN: You can plant almost everything in the fall garden that you would plant in the spring garden. Some plants do better when planted in the fall than in the spring, including brussels spouts and (for me) cabbage and other cole crops. The hardest part of planting a fall garden is that you must, by necessity, start new plants and seeds during Oklahoma's hottest, driest, most miserable weather. You can get around that by starting seeds in peat pellets indoors where it is cooler, hardening them off in semi-shade and the transplanting them into the ground, preferably on a cloudy day (or in the evening, so they have all night to recover). You also can give new plants some shade while they are getting established, using shadecloth and other methods, including spraying them with Wilt-Prufe. If you keep them well-watered, the tiny summer-planted transplants will catch hold and grow although you may not see a lot of topgrowth until the weather cools a little in September. Here's approximate planting dates for a fall garden in southern Oklahoma. If you are significantly further north, you may want to plant 2 weeks earlier so you can get a harvest before frost arrives. June 15th-July 1st: Cantaloupe, muskmelon, watermelon and any other European, Asian or American melons (seeds or transplants) July 1st-15th: Tomatoes, eggplants and peppers (all from transplants, not seed) July 15th: Sweet corn (seed) (I pre-soak it in water overnight to help it germinate more quickly, especially if the soil is very dry. July 15-30th: Cilantro (seed or transplants), pole beans (seed), southern peas (black-eyed peas, crowder peas, cream peas, etc.)(seed), winter squash (seed or transplants), pumpkins (seed or transplants) July 15th-August 15th: okra (seed or transplants) July 15th-September 1st: Summer squash (including zuchinni) (seed or transplants) July 25-August 10: potatoes (seed potato pieces) August 1st-Sept. 1st: collards (seed), brussels sprouts (seed or plants), cabbage (seed or plants), swiss chard (seed or plants), kohlrabi (seed or plants) August 1st-Oct. 15th: spinach (seed), mustard (seed), August 1st-15th: Rutabagas and turnips (seed), carrots and parsnips (seed), broccoli (seed or transplants), August 1st-October 1st: parsley (seed or transplants) August 15th-Sept. 10th: lettuce (seed or transplants) August 10th-20th: Bush beans (seed), lima beans (seed), cucumbers (seed or transplants) Sept. 1st-15: beets (seeds) Sept. 1st-Oct. 1st: peas Sept. 10th-Oct. 1st: Leeks (seed) Sept. 15th-Oct. 15th: Garlic (for a spring harvest) HEIRLOOM TOMATOES: I'm going to list the ones that not only have great flavor, but that have great production. Black Krim (maroonish-greenish-reddish fruit) Cherokee Purple (or Cherokee Chocolate or Cherokee Green)(all taste about the same to me, only difference is skin color) Nebraska Wedding (Orange-gold fruit) Hillybilly or Royal Hillbilly Aunt Gertie's Gold Dr. Wyche's Yellow Mortgage Lifter (pink fruit) Dr. Carolyn (ivory to yellow cherry) Arkansas Traveler or Traveler 76 (not technically an heirloom, I suppose, but has been around Arkansas so long that I think of it as one) Earl's Faux (flavor almost as good as Brandywine, not technically an heirloom, but a sport or cross grown from at least one heirloom parent) Porter, Porter's Pride or Improved Porter (pinkish-red) Bradley (pink, an Arkansas heirloom) Marianna's Peace (pink) Snow White--another ivory to pale yellow cherry, fruit are larger than Dr. Carolyn Black Cherry--relatively new on the market, so I guess it is not an heirloom, but it has that special heirloom-type flavor Sungold--is not an heirloom, but it the best cherry tomato ever If I could only grow 5 heirlooms, I'd grow Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Mortgage Lifter, Snow White and Arkansas Traveler OR Nebraska Wedding. And, if I could only grow 5 hybrids, I'd grow Brandy Boy (flavor incredibly close to Brandywine's), Better Boy, Sweet Million, Sungold and Porterhouse. If I could only grow 5 tomato varieties total, I think I'd grow Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, Sungold, Better Boy and Mortgage Lifter. That's my list of favorite tomatoes, heirloom and hybrid. And, if you asked me on a different day, you might get a different list. Each heirloom has a flavor that is unique and special, sort of like fine wine. And, flavor can vary from year to year and also varies due to soil and growing conditions. You didn't ask about paste tomatoes for canning or cooking, but some of the best ones are Opalka, Amish Paste, Grandma Mary's Paste, Martino's Roma and San Marzano Redorta. For sun-dried tomatoes, you can't go wrong with Principe' Borghese.

Just shooting from the hip here, going line by line through your post: The pillows that came with the couch ARE pretty, but I'd still change them, or add to them. The smallest ones are too small. The rug is too small and pale for this floor and your furniture. If you're really committed to it, pull the couches forward so their front legs are on the rugs, and then adjust the recliners to suit.This may also help both couches share a coffee table or ottoman. Or you may not need one at all. (I'd prefer not to have one in your arrangement. As for family pics on canvas, I want those, too! What scale and where to put them I can't say because I can't see the walls of the room. Can you take a shot of each wall? Big vases where? I tried corner lamps in my living room (similar layout, as we've said) It didn't look right. And at night, I didn't like having lamps on next to the TV. Also, and this is a "me" thing, I didn't like having all the "electronic stuff" on one wall. Too much like a wall-sized entertainment center. A sofa table could work, but I'm so into balance, I'd need one behind each couch. You have a built-in ~what~ with nothing in it? And where is it? Is the pass-through of this room behind the recliners? How much space is there from behind the recliners to the next wall or piece of furniture? Each recliner should share a side table with the couch next to it, and the tables should be round, not square. I'm big into plants, so I'd make sure to put some in front of those windows. I love your floor and am exceedingly jealous. Here are some pics of the pool. I took pictures from the beginning to the end of the process, but I'm assuming you want to see the pool and not the process. This is a picture of the pool the day it finished filling, which is why the water looks green, no chemicals yet. Hardly any landscaping is done. And notice how the close edge of the photo shows the deck meeting the dirt that used to be grass. This shows the pool and deck in relation the the back of the house. See how the water is finally blue? And you see a peek of the brick patio I put down after my hubby graded the dirt for me. I'm very proud of that! And this shows the other side, how the ground slopes away, and how much yard we still have left over. I'm just starting to work on landscaping. See the finished patio? Also, the iron fence-work and three brick columns are done, but none of these pictures show it. Same sorta angle, but from an upstairs window. This view is from standing in the ~other~ back corner of the yard. It's beautiful, but not done (like everything else) We still need to paint the trim and door of the screened porch, finish landscaping the dirt slope, and build steps where you can see the grass ends at the patio. My husband wasn't open to a pool at all, either. I started jokingly telling him, "I'm not broke, and I'm not asking," and "Great. I'll use MY half of OUR money to pay for it." Finally, I put an ugly pop-up pool in the yard, and kept it there for two years, then replaced it with the same thing when it wore out. By the time that one died two years later, he was sold on a real pool. I did all the maintenance for the pop up, and I do all maintenance for this pool. But that meant I could design and build exactly what I wanted. I even created the shape myself! Here's the eyesore that caused him to give in.

Well, PV, we all know now that you have a good excuse, lol.

I still have so much to plant out. We've had so much rain that I haven't been able to get out there and plant anything. And I still need to extend the beds so I have room to plant out. Maybe if it ever stops raining for more than a day...

I'm considering giving away some jugs of bedding annuals to co-workers. I was going to divvy them up so they could share, but at this point, I think I will just bring in the jugs as is and let them fight over them, lol.

Ive got a few. There's some lilies that are still pretty small and some others that arent really doing anything. hard to get excited about those last few.

been busy too, to that doesnt help.

Here's what I have left.

The large plant at the end was planted today. A gift of Rudbeckia triloba from Carrie. The remainders are butterfly bushes, Calycanthus, Carolina Cherry Laurels, and dogwoods. The brown containers in the front are newly sown rudbeckia hirta and four o'clocks.

I'm never done, and am known to waste plants because I don't get them all planted.

I spring sowed and am waiting for them to get stronger before I set them out and try not to run out the clock B4 first freeze. My delphs I transplanted into cell packs until they get bigger, didn't want to sow them HOS which I prefer.

Some germinated very well, the ones that like cool, but this was a bad spring to sow that way because most like a little higher temps B4 they germinate. I've had good luck with it in the past with perennials.

Yup, still got a mess of planting out to do.

Plus, I still have a few potted up perennials I ws'd LAST year. They are blooming nicely in their pots though :)

Yes, yes, yes...got many containers done today but had to wait until I had time to put up fencing around them to plant. Have to plant Zinnia, Tomato, Pepper, Marigold and other things in containers because not enough room in beds that are amended and get enough sun. Need to fence in too many plants I like so deer/rabbits/groundhogs don't eat anything else.

As they eat buds off something I scramble to find something that will bloom in the blank space that they don't usually eat. Running out of things that meet that criteria. You can only plant so much Nepeta and Agastache cause the Butterflies need their nectar too.

Still have a "pot ghetto" but it's just in a different place now!

Lots left but 2 friends and a Girl Scout troop are waiting for extras I sowed for them.

I've decided to do summer sowing of perennials and plant in Fall. Maybe this will take some of the load off come Spring next year if we have another wet/cold one.

Can't believe I said that given all the seedlings staring at me with major guilt in their eyes.

I can't leave plants out like that because of mainly chipmunks. I'm covering them all with chicken wire which is not fun.

Once they fill out the pot or the soil settles in the beds, it is not such a problem. They don't like cypress mulch either. I also put rocks in my pots as well. Just when I think the soil has settled enough, I find things dug up.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is going to face mega planting yet this year.

OMG!! Can I be the leader of the pack? Tonight I finished digging out over 300 plants for my plant sale on Saturday so I will have room for all my babies at least.

Problem though... I dig up some plants and since I planted those in HOS, I discover there are smaller plants within the clumps and pot them up to replant for me. How crazy is that???

Hands from the whole family raised..

I have two 5 shelf shelving units of annuals and Three 4 shelf shelving units of perennials. WHERE is it all going to go? No clue. It's not like I haven't been planting out - LOTS got out. I just grew too much and, with the annuals, mother nature is NOT cooperating. It's hard to feel motivated to plant such tiny tiny annuals. They want a little WARMTH to grow!!!

Count me in too. I have 9 jugs left of flowers and 4 of veggies and herbs. On top of that, I decided to plant two more jugs of cherry profusion zinnias to take the place of the Sweet William that has just stopped blooming and looks bad.

I would have gotten it all done last week but we've had so much rain!! It's impossible to plant in the muck and mud.

The rain and muddy soil really made me space out this job. I also just got sprouts on the tithonia two weeks ago. Gomphrena germinates gradually, so I plant some out, smooth over the container, and more keep sprouting. One batch of larkspur never got planted out and I fear it is too late now. Its spot with the daylilies is in an area of the garden that really turns to concrete if worked when wet. Guess what? It has been really wet there, all spring.

I lost of lot of babies to slugs or pill bugs, probably also due to the wet weather. Planting out can be heartbreaking. Not really. Overall, so much is growing beautifully.

I am SO still planting out! On top of it all - I have dahlias to plant, and a thoughtful friend arrived with a truckload (it seems) of newly divided perennials! They have no place to go at the moment, and of course I cannot throw them out! My yard is fast becoming like a medical "triage" centre - attention is given to those that need it most urgently! Ah - summer!

Well I thought I was done, but I am not a few contains I was about to toss decided to sprout! And a co worker just bought me in Holly Hock seeds and some other strange looking pod. Guess I will go right into Summer sowing from here...

Im down to ony 4 containers, well I guess 5...

1. Winky Blue Columbine, I swear im still getting germination on some of the seeds so have been putting off finding a home for them...

2. Some sort of early beefsteak toms, I have no space left for toms, at least with the columbine, I could go dig a hole on the edge of the forest and drop them in... Where the heck am I going to put any more tomatoes in!!!!

3. One more cross of a daylily, I traded about 40 or so away and planted the a couple hundred more.. I found one more cross scrounging around out there... its ed brown x steve trimmer, not the most exiting cross ever and probable the reason its still sitting in a 20 oz container!

4. A couple of grasses, I am waiting to see if they are really the grass or some weeds lol..

I think thats pretty much it! Even a couple weeks ago I had a couple of dozen, so its pretty much all planted for this year!

I'm getting ready to finish up on my "What the heck is it?" window box. Seeds got all mixed up in couple of my containers. It's going to be while before I know what to do with them.

I was hoping for lime yellow leaves.

Shoot, I'm still planting, too. Not counting the newly seeded stuff, I still have about a dozen tomato seedlings that need homes as well as some random flowers.

"Plant me! Plant me!", scream my ws seedlings as I walk by. Okay, I have a few planted out. Felicia heterophylla (Blue Daisy) was blooming in the container, a very pretty blue, so got them in a bed. All the poppies and snapdragons are planted out. Have potted up some Tutti Frutti lupine seedlings that will get planted out in the fall. Same with King Arthur delphiniums and NZ delphiniums. Perennial geraniums are either planted in beds or potted up. Morning glories are potted using Fran's suggestions and are growing well.

I have been moving second year ws perennials from holding beds into regular beds or taking some to plant swaps. Have been pleased with the variety of columbines blooming this spring. Love the verbascum 'Violette' and the 'Early Guardian Blue' delphiniums that are blooming now. Also many variteties of dianthus and penstemon. 2nd year ws lupine was gorgeous. Have cut the flowers back except for a stem or two left to set seed.

Will start planting some of this year's perennials in the open spaces of the holding beds.

Didn't get many annuals sown, zinnias and nicotiana just germinating and cosmos will be direct sown this weekend.
I didn't sow any red TX salvia as last year had so much from self sown. Don't see any of them this year. Wonder if I still have time to sow some as the hummers love them.
Self sown linaria have been beautiful. Will sow more varieties of them next winter.

I am so glad I have company. I spent the last two days planting out like mad (in the rain today) and for the first time I am almost done: sweet peas (2 batches), 4 o'clocks, zinnias, datura, cosmos, marigolds, okra, chamomile, Yvonne's Salvia, sunflowers, penstemon Huskers Red, Siberian WallFlower, hollyhocks. Today I did a few flats of petunias to grow on for a couple of weeks before they are really large enough for the ground and all I have left are my lupines and one or two other loners (Cupid's Dart & Wine Cup). My Yvonne's Salvia were about a foot tall when they went in today so should bloom earlier than last year. Of course I still have several things to direct sow - it has been so cold until this week, I'll try to fit them in this weekend.
P.S. Laura, my four o'clock limelights are lime-green. Perhaps you had a mix-up with your seeds.

well count me in also even tho I live in NC and have been planting off and on since March. I have a 7ft picnic table loaded down with trays of 4" pots plus a shade house with trays in there - I am basically never done because I just love the growing process. Check with me again next year and I will be in the same situation only with different plants......

Two more left to plant out...would be about around ten, but shame on me, I actually got exhausted planting out so many plants that I let a about 8 dry out and croak. Might have a few survivors in those bone dry flats to pick out, but the rest are goners.

I'm so not done.
I have a pretty healthy pot-ghetto (more like container-ghetto) going in my backyard.

I did get some things planted out yesterday, when I heard we were going to get rain all day today.

But there's some things that just sprouted (Malus sargentii and Big Leaf Magnolia) and others that have sprouted a long time ago, but are too tiny for me to feel comfortable to plant out because when I did before at this stage, I lost them(Cardinal Flower, Foxglove, and Monarda).

And it's been so cool here, that I've been waiting for the patio bed to wake up! It gets a lot of water, and it seems to need more heat to make the perennials really produce. And I need to see where the perennials are so I know what to plant where.

As much as I wanted to have no containers at this point, it ain't gonna happen at all this year, I think. I'm going to be potting things up and planting some of them out in the Fall.

Me too. Lambs ears, rose companion, Hibiscus, soapwort. I WILL get it done this week, yes I will. I need to, the 80degree weather will be on us this week.

After reading all these posts, I don't feel so guilty about looking out on my patio covered with plant trays. Honestly, since I grow native perennials, most of these are still very small and not quite ready to plant out. This was my first year at WS, with mixed results, but I have seeds waiting for spring-summer sowing and lots more waiting for fall-winter. I ordered a bunch from a well-known mail-order nursery's 50% off sale in April. I guess you could say that I'm "hooked" on WS.
