I don't use either. I stopped a few years ago and haven't ever missed them.

Liquid. I have a front loader and the tell you not to use the sheets. When I had a standard dryer I used sheets or a Downy ball, nothing to clean out. Then I read about the film dryer sheets leave behind and used only liquid.

I don't use fabric softener and don't have any problem with my clothes. Well, we mostly wear cotton, so static cling isn't a problem anyway. And we have major allergies, so I never add any extra chemicals to our environment, if I can help it.

Just wanted to warn you of a safety issue, though. Just as you have to clean the washer--if you use dryer sheets in the dryer, you will need to REGULARLY clean the lint screen by washing it thoroughly. Using dryer sheets blocks the holes in the screen, creating a very serious fire hazard, if you don't keep up with that. So if you do switch, please be careful

nikki- Thanks for the snopes info. We always clean the dryer filter after each use but now I'm going to give it a thorough wash too. Even though I don't use fabric softener of any kind I can see how those small screen openings could become clogged.

I use a bit of vinegar in the rinse. Actually, in the extra rinse. I feel, like my towels absorb better since I started that, in the 80's.

I also hardly ever use my dryer (it's for emergencies only, like if it rains for several days in a row). It is really just a big space hog, LOL. I use a clothes line. Have all my life. Just can't see spending that money that running a clothes dryer will cost.. specially when we keep having nice days with plenty of wind.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I hadn't known about the dryer filter issue! Thanks Nikki and Azzalea for that info. I'm now leaning toward using nothing and seeing how the clothes feel that way. I don't use anything on towels or sheets now and they seem fine. Appreciate your input folks!!

Fabric softener (liquid) is very bad for your dryer and not so good for your washer, either. It's paraffin based (which is a wax) and that waxy substance will gum up your dryer's electronic moisture sensors - that tell the dryer when the clothes are dry.

When I was in appliance repair, we got lots and lots of calls from people who had dryer problems from using a liquid fabric softener for years and years.

Just vinegar. Have for years. Cheaper, plus I don't care for smells on my clothes. My clothes just smell clean, not perfumy.

Neither. It's true there is no static cling if you wear natural fabrics, if that's why you use softener. I never used it on towels.

Neither. I use a liquid detergent (Gain) and no fabric softener. The clothes dryer works just fine, leaves everything nice and soft.

Personally, I don't like the sheets! I want my clothes SOFT and I don't get with the sheets.

Pour straight vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser to remove the old, dried softener.

I've never used vinegar because I was afraid my clothes would smell like vinegar. So it doesn't??? How much do you use?

I use dryer sheets on clothing. If I have something that is big and bulky like a blanket or quilt I just throw a dryer sheet into the final rinse cycle so it acts same as a liquid would.

My dryer is at least 18 years old. No problems. I just clean the lint screen after every load.

BTW using fabric softener of any kind on towels reduces their absorbency.

sheilajoyce - I'm going to try that when I get home from work today. It's a pain in the you know what yanking that dispenser out and trying to get all the gunk out. Thanks!! I hope I can get used to no softener!!!

We use white vinegar instead of liquid fabric softener. Your clothes will NOT smell like vinegar after they are dried. Your towels and jeans will feel lots softer with all the soap cut and rinsed out in the rinse load!

I throw in a fabric dryer sheet in loads that I want to keep from being 'staticky" or feel real soft (mostly just knit shirts). I do also wash my dryer screen every month or so just in case the softener has built up on it.

I use sheets,when I use anything.Liquid softener builds up on your clothes (paraffin?) I have a cousin who uses liquid and her towels will not absorb water when you dry off with them from the softener build up.I don't use softener of any kind in my sheets,under garments or towels and not always in my other clothes.Just when there seems to be a lot of static electricity in the air.I use vinegar in the last rinse also.

I'm lazy - I use dryer sheets. But I like the way clothes smell and feel when using liquid softener in the washer more.

I use those plastic spiky looking balls in the dryer. They used to be advertised on TV.
Fluffier towels, no allergens,long lasting, saves money.
I gave some to my DDIL in Tokyo and she loves them for the kids clothes.

I use dollar store dryer sheets & tear them in 1/2 - I also wash my lint screen, probably twice a year (spring cleaning & then again in the fall).

I must be nuts.lol because I use liquid fabric softner in my washing machine.Than when I place my clothes in the dryer I use the sheets in my dryer.I have always done this.I must be the only one that uses both.When I dry clothes I use the sheets to keep down static electricity.

I put Calgon in the rinse water and a dryer sheet in the dryer to cut the static. Try using ONLY Calgon on a load of wash and watch the soap scum come out of your clothes.

I use dryer sheets. The ones I use are unscented & have a plant-based softener.
