Another of my dad's slides........My stepgrandfather is on the left. He emigrated from Scotland in 1913 with his wife and two small children. He was a bricklayer, and did a lot of artistic work, including Grand Central Station. I was very fond of him. He loved to play cards, and fed Scotch whiskey to his parakeet. The two women in the middle are his sisters who were visiting from Scotland. That's me between them (age 14, I think), and my second mother (his daughter) is on the right.

Taken in the St. Helen's Museum. On the drive up I wondered why the stumps didn't burn and this explained it. It was not a lava eruption it was an ash eruption. The stumps would not burned because there was not enough oxygen. By the way the new growth of trees was beautiful. They were very worried the seeds would not survive.

Nicole, I can only guess... since there are no bears in Antarctica, they are either seal, penguin or some natural movement of the snowy areas. We saw nothing in the way of life while we were inside the cauldron. Jodi-

I took a screen shot of a barn owl cam I've been watching for a few weeks. Last year I watched Molly and McGee in San Marcos, CA. This year is Sydney and Melbourne in Oceanside, CA (the owner of the box is originally from Australia). They go by Mel and Syd.

This is Syd, keeping watch over her seven eggs which are due to start hatching sometime next week.

I've taken some liberties with Photoshop to make the photo a bit more interesting.

Jodi,this has been in our paper the last week or so and i forget to go look at it.I live in Oceanside,and i understand there are a couple more here.

A couple of years ago one of our weekly columnists set up a camera on a hummingbirds nest outside his bathroom window,that was interesting as well.

My #1 son when he was young hand raised an owl from a baby to an adult,also a hawk and a possum.We live on the edge of a canyon and there were always babies falling from the nests.

Yes the humane society knew about it,and even saved mice for his owl,and found his possum a couple times when it got away,and returned them back to him free of charge.Both he and #2 son used to help out at the humane society back then,this was in the 60'early 70's before the HS got so uppity,and political.JMO

I don't often comment on the photos but greatly enjoy them...always my evening treat. That Arizona sunset is just spectacular and "Picasso-ish". What a great painting that would be (You know....BIG mural size...I am blown away.) Nanny

May I use it as my desktop for awhile?

I see a man's head to right and behind the big red mountain in vetaal's picture. To me it looks like JFK lying down with his body behind the mountain.

Kathi, I don't know about other owls in Oceanside but there is another pair (besides Molly and McGee) in San Marcos and a pair in Chula Vista. There are others in the area but can't find the links right now. They are all sitting on between 5 and 8 eggs.

Nicole - it is about 50 miles east of the Wave. This is Lower Antelope Canyon jast east of Page, AZ. Upper is more dramatic with
light beams from opening in the ceiling, but in Lower you can wander on your own for couple of hours and there's a lot of great photos to be had.
