a kink in my painting plans

I was all set to finish up the painting in the dining room this weekend, and this morning my DH told me he wanted to make a trip into the Twin Cities (MN) to get a few things.

(I think he's getting cabin fever, he's between work projects right now and bored sitting at home.)

Since he really wanted me to agree to this trip (it's about 800 miles round trip) he said we could take the truck and stop at Ikea and pick up that folding bed I wanted.

Then - he told me he wants to get another chair for upstairs, and a bigger rug for the library room.

I'm in shock - this is from the guy that thinks it's OK to use an empty, ripped open soda cube box as a waste basket!

So now I'm running around the house looking for color samples I can bring with, and racking my brain for any other places I wanted to stop at while there (Penzey's is on the list for sure).

I'd do better with a few days notice, not a few hours. But I know it's time to strike while the iron is hot!

Oh, how funny!! Such a guy thing - it works, so why not? My DH is the same way but over the years I've pretty well trained that out of him! I'd be afraid to sneeze for fear he'd change his mind about the trip! Enjoy the opportunity - it may never happen again ;-)

There is hope that our large renovation may actually get to the painting stage at some point. Unfortunately, like many projects, we're projecting we're going to end up over budget and we're cutting things where we can. I know the professional painters here are going to cringe, but one of the places we have to cut is in the painting. We intend to have pros paint the living room with its cathedral ceiling and tall walls (it's a scaffolding thing) and the relatively high ceilings in the bedroom. I plan to do the rest (as it turns out I have a week-long furlough coming up at work so I'm hoping that will coincide with the painting schedule). The drywall guys are going to spray prime the walls so in theory the priming should be taken care of. My understanding is that the ceiling should be done first, then trim, then the walls. Is this right? The bedroom ceilings will be tongue in groove boards (my GC calls it car siding). We will also have random width wood paneling in the hallway (matches existing material in the house). What sheen of paint would you recommend for these surfaces? I did the wood ceiling in the kitchen in a flat sheen and I'm not very happy with it. For the trim, I intend to use either BM Fresh Start primer or Zinsser 123 based on what I've read here, then follow up with BM Aura (which just happens to be what I feel most comfortable with, other than FPE, which isn't really economically feasible for this project) in a satin sheen. Does that sounds OK? Is there anything I'm missing here? Would you recommend that I have the pros also do the interior doors? I have to say I'm a little intimidated by six-panel doors. A few more ideas: 1) consider flipping the kitchen and the dining room, this would enable you to better coordinate pantry, laundry, and utility spaces (what is that space next to the washer/dryer)? And would also help concentrate plumbing. In addition, it would give you a "clean" wall in your dining area, where I would put a bench (against the wall), w/ a rectangle farm table. This would give you enough seating for company, but leave you with plenty of space everyday. 2) I would also improve the layout of the master bath and closet, I think a better use of space is to have one well planned closet (versus 2), and, if possible, include a pass thru to the laundry area. 3) since space is tight, I would use pocket doors throughout the interior (except for bedroom entrances) 4) that back bedroom is really small ,,, I would consider having the front and back bedrooms the same size and (without knowing your ceiling height), I would include built in storage on top of the closets, which I'd keep at minimum depth. I'd also widen that section a bit and shoot for slightly bigger rooms. I'd re-work that hall area, seems like there is wasted space and I'd consider angled doorways (be sure it's not so tight that you can't move in furniture). 5) The second bath can be laid out more efficiently to give some space to the bedrooms. I'd just have a bath/shower combo, a stool, and vanity/sink. I would omit a linen closet and instead include built-in's ,,, both in the shower (for shampoo etc.) and around the room e.g. medicine cabinets and storage cubbies. In terms of layout, I'd have the door open up across from the sink/vanity, with the tub turned, and the stool on the outside wall (that's a classic bath layout, and it's classic for a reason). 6) With cement floors, I'd consider radiant floor heating. 7) I would have the left and right sides of the house 13.5 feet wide and then the middle section would be 18 ft. I'd also consider lining up the entrances to the bedroom areas on each side of the house across from one another. I'd also consider a built-in opposite the bar where one side is a book shelf (opening to the living area) and the other side is a buffet/server/china cabinet opening to the dining area. I like symmetry. 8) although I like the front door in the middle from an exterior perspective, it would not work for me from an interior perspective. Slide it down off-set to the french doors in the back of the house. I would then add two windows to the living room. Along with symmetry, I like windows. I strongly recommend that you finalize a detailed house plan, BEFORE you start building AND to include in your written contract with the builder. Good luck.

Hi judi82 I just went through the exact same thing, painting multiple rooms in a house with a wide open floor plan. I asked for and received much appreciated advice on this forum by posting pics of the space we had not yet moved into. In the end though, I did not have enough confidence to make the decisions without someone walking through the space with me in person. Since most color consultants were kinda pricey in our view, given we had just bought a house and done a lot of improvements we didn't expect to need to do, I ended up hiring a color consultant out of our local Benjamin Moore store. She was fabulous and only $85/hr. I spent $112 and feel like it was money very very well spent. The biggest worry I had, in addition to the actual color selection, was where to start and stop the different colors given the open plan. Although I knew the general color scheme and feeling I wanted, I knew not a damn thing about undertones, which apparently are everything:) So anyway, maybe your local BM store has such a consultant? Love your whitewashed beams and wood ceiling. I would say the bead board should be the same white as your trim. Right now the bead board matches the ceiling but with the grey wall, wood ceiling and white washed beam, to add another color might be too much. If anything I might do a slightly darker shade of the wall color on the bead board. I know you said you don’t remember the color of the trim so you could just pick a shade of white that compliments the color on beams and paint trim and beadboard all the same. We just stayed at an Airbnb with painted bead board blended with stained. Also they stained some of it a dark green. See photos. So maybe you could find a color to work without over doing it.

Lucky you! Hurry, get going before he changes his mind!

I have fantasies about DH suggesting we buy furniture! OK, maybe that's a topic for a separate post.

Got home last night around 8:30 - with the back of the truck pretty full. The truck has an 8' bed with a topper and a slider (no crawling into the back of the truck for me!). Makes it real easy to haul things that don't have to be hauled upright.

Right now I have boxes all over, makes the house even more crowded.

For the dining room - I bought two glass front upper cabinets for the alcove. They will go one on each end with open shelves in between. This matches the look of the sideboard -

We could have made these, but right now we've got about four projects ahead of this - so it might be over a year before we'd get to it.

We found a really neat folding table for the den. Our computer desks are back to back, and there is room for this in between, so we can extend a flap, turn a chair around and use it as a work place.

We had discussed the library and decided to take down the wall mounted shelves and get two bookcases.

This means once I'm done in the dining room, I get to start on the library repairing holes in the wall and re-painting. We are moving the wall mount TV too. The sofa in that room is going on CL and the china hutch that I moved out of the dining room will be going back into the dining room - maybe I should put both the hutch and the couch on CL - they look nice together.

And we got what I wanted - the day bed for upstairs. This one I can't link a picture too as it's not on the website anymore. Got there and found out it's discontinued, but they still had them in stock so we grabbed one and got it loaded in the truck, then came back in to finish our shopping.

We made three rounds of the showroom looking at things, we were there about 4 hours. We also got two chairs and some smaller stuff.

DH is happy - we got the spices and seasonings. Today I'll be painting and he'll be processing venison. By the time we are both done, hopefully we'll have a nice looking dining room and some good food to eat in it.

Wow, sounds like you had a very successful trip! Can't wait to see it all in place. I sure wish I had some of your ambition. Sadly lacking here. Had an abscessed molar pulled on Friday, so am taking it easy.

Will keep checking on your progress. Your dining room is going to look fabulous!
