Question about side edge of laminate countertops

My $10k budget is at about $12k right now so there is no way we can afford other than laminate counter tops. I don't mind much since the counter top I have now is a boomerang laminate that looks probably as good as the day they installed it 56 years ago.

My problem, I have 2 sides that will be exposed (not up against an appliance or a wall) so I was given my options on what to do with those sides.

1. we could have them rounded like the front but it would mean another seam.

2. have the side piece glued on, making it flat looking

3. get the entire thing beveled, the front part and the sides.

My question is, what do you recommend?

My husband is concerned with clothing getting caught on to a piece of laminate and tearing it. (we have 3 kids) Walking through lowes and HD, most laminate tops are chipped on the side.

He is also concerned about the beveled edge and water getting into it and then it peeling/chipping or whatever.

I'm ready to throw my hands up! I just don't know what to do here. I see all these pics of High Def laminate and I LOVE them but I want it to last and don't want it to chip!!
