Laminating curved-edge counters
Comments (10)DIY laminate is tricky if you are not experienced in applying it. The thing with laminate is, you use contact cement and once that laminate touches the surface you are applying it to, its stuck and can't be removed. If you screw up and lay it down incorrectly, you are pretty much stuck with it. So, although you can do it yourself (and save a bundle, the sheet laminate is not expensive, its the labor that drives up the cost) you should be aware, especially on long counters, that it can be tricky to get a smooth, flat contact without any air bubbles. You have to do your edges too, using a strip of the laminate that is applied and then routered and the sharp edge smoothed out. Many years ago, in our first house, we did a new laminate counter ourselves, as we were on a very tight budget. It came out OK, there was a bubble on the longer run, which was there as long as we had the house. That is not to discourage you, it can be done of course. If you've done laminate before, you know what you are doing, if not, I'd practice with some cheap laminate on a work bench or laundry table first....See MoreDifferent Formica Laminate Countertop Edge Options
Comments (14)You can have laminate countertops made in any thickness you like -- provided you don't go so thin as co compromise the structure. In the 60s 1" thick laminate counterops was the rage for a while. We still replace a lot of it. The 1-1/2" standard laminate thickness serves no particular purpose. It just happens to be what you get when you glue two 3/4" board together. We commonly have tops made 1-1/4" thick to match Formica's ideal edge thickness. Other edge fabricators will go as thin a 1-1/8" which is about 2 cm. This helps the illusion that the laminate is stone since stone tops are typically 2 cm....See MoreCountertop thoughts? Laminate on exposed edge plywood?
Comments (15)I would build and put my name on and guarantee behind a Baltic birch plywood top with a plastic laminate top and exposed built-up edge with a polyester finish. I'd insist on a drop-in sink without some other detail for an undermount, but considering the adhesive for Baltic birch is exterior grade and there aren't any voids, an exposed vertical edge with a finish would be fine even in front of a sink....See Moreraising a laminate edge marble counter to accommodate drawers
Comments (5)The cabinets are semi custom and designed fine. I have to add a buildup as the style I chose has drawer and door facing that goes all the way to the top of the base to cover the rail. I like the look. I am installing a 3cm marble with a laminated edge on the island so I'm not worried about distance from upper cabinetry. However, the island is large and houses drawers down one side and doors around the other, plus a set of under counter refrigerator drawers... so the double edge will definitel obstruct the opening. My stone fabricator has informed me that they don't do the buildup and that it needs to be in place with the proper opening for the cutouts. They suggested building a frame with cross bars. I didn't think about the knotting of the wood so to me plywood makes more sense, but I've not had to consider this before....See MoreShelley
