Depending on what the sweaters are made of, dry in dryer long enough to get excess water out then hang on clothes hangers that have padding, hang to dry. Old shoulder pads are great to put on hangers to keep from having pokies.

A good place would be on a clothes rod fastened to a wall in the garage, like in front of the cars. Leave until dry.

If you wear lots of sweaters I am sure you know to never hang a good sweater to dry it. Some light knit tops can be hung but not real sweaters. There are lots of good sweater dryers on the web, depending on exactly what space you have. The Improvements Catalog has a stacking one, and the Container Store has a cool, pop-open one that looks like a sun shield for a windshield. It could sit on the W/D and even be stacked.
Enjoy your laundry room. I wish I had one. I do my laundry in the kitchen. Very convenient but tacky. :-)

This year I will be having an addition put on the house that includes a laundry room (no more in the basement and 2 flights of stairs:) but in the meantime, for years, I have used an extra large wood folding clothes dryer rack (folds like an accordian)and the dowels are extra big too. Got 2 new ones at an unpainted furniture store. Well worth the price. Some things I have noticed over the many years is that wood absorbs the moisture so there is minimal imprint on my sweaters, the rack takes up little room and can be stored easily. I have one in the basement and one in my 'exercise room' for some things that don't completely dry in my dryer...

The other thing you might consider is what my friend in Scotland has (and can be gotten here) are the slightly curved racks that are on a pulley to lower, load, and then raise up to the ceiling for drying. They come in all different sizes. You didn't say how high your ceilings are, but this might be an option for over the machines rather than a shelf....and something I may install myself.

I did a search for sweater dryers and may end up purchasing some of the stacking mesh shelf-type sweater dryers and putting them on a shelf. Does anyone have these? Are they worth it? They seem like they might take up a lot of space but might be the best option.

I am ery intrigued by the racks on the pulleys... do you have a picture or a link of what this might be or how it works?

cryptandrus - I looked at your link and while it does the same thing, the wooden curved racks in Scotland (and all over Europe) are very simple in design and use standard rope. I'll try to find a link that sells them here as I know they do when I was looking for one, and they come in all different sizes.

I tried the mesh things and found they take up too much space and are awkward.....everyone is different.

I did see a neat idea several years ago where a flat rack of 6 rungs, was hinged against the wall and then just pulled down like a shelf, about 45 degrees. I thought that was a great space saver item - any carpenter should be able to construct it with thick dowels, side bars, and folding hinges.

I was just at Ikea and saw a flat wall rack that folds down, sounds similar to the one you described.

It was much less $$ than the clothesline shop's rack.

When I was growing up I remember hanging washed sweaters on inflatable hangers -- not the skinny kind I seem to find these days but ones that had both shoulders and a torso (so to speak) which kept the sweater in a body-shape form while air drying.

Anybody know if those are still made?
