Need Pattern Book ideas for Christmas
Comments (3)"Last Minute Knitted Gifts" -- lots of cute patterns for all ages, and some of them can be really quickly made. Caps, scarves, wristwarmers, baby sweaters/blankets/toys, some adult things. I didn't want it when I first looked at it but when I saw all the cute things people were making with the patterns (look on flickr or ravelry), I got it. "YarnPlay" -- mostly adult patterns, a few household patterns, one cute baby jacket and a cute sweater for kids. I really love "Scarf Style" for it's variety of great scarves to make. I like Elizabeth Zimmerman's books, too. Most of my other books are stitch pattern books, but I love lace knitting and am looking for a good lace pattern book -- something with scarves, shawls, etc. I get a lot of my books on ebay after I've looked at them from the library to make sure I want them -- you can get some great bargains on ebay, but sometimes it's cheaper to use another website or even your bookstore. Truthfully, though, there are so many great free patterns on the internet, that's where I get most of mine. Have fun!...See MoreDesperate for creative ideas for giving teen cash for Christmas
Comments (15)I've used the little knit "magic gloves" you can get at the dollar store, with crisp new bills rolled up and inserted into the fingers. The fingers are just the right length and the gloves (at least at the dollar stores around here) come in some kooky patterns and colors. I used $2 bills (so few of the "young'uns" know about $2 bills, they think it's fake money!) and it made a $20 gift look pretty nifty, but you can even get away with singles for things like office gifts or teacher gifts. For instance, if you have a strict $10 limit, deduct the $1 for the gloves and roll up a note reading "just gotta HAND it to ya, you're a great person!" or something dopey like that for one of the fingers, with $1 bills in the other 9 fingers. These are also fun to hang on Christmas trees or used to decorate another gift. (Wouldn't it be fun to find these tucked into the pockets of a new coat?) Ohhh, just thought of something... I see those prepackaged gift boxes of hat, scarf, and gloves go on sale after Christmas for next to nothing - I think it would be a hoot to take the gloves out of that, slip rolled bills into the fingers, and put them back into the gift box. Recipient opens up this rather boring gift (you could make it a joke gift by getting really, really ugly ones, or giving sets that are totally inappropriate for the recipient like pink butterflies for a teenaged boy) but it has a hidden surprise. Would take preplanning, of course, but it's a thought for the future and you could get some mileage out of it. Or those of you with bigger budgets can make the gloves part of the gift, using nice cashmere or leather gloves with whatever amount of money rolled up into the fingers, or $1 bills in all the fingers except one which has a $100 (for example) bill rolled up inside the $1, so they have to unroll all the bills to find the "jackpot". I have a "regift box" of things I have received and can't use or don't want (lots of the "WHAT on EARTH were they thinking?!" items... LOL Perfectly nice items, just totally inappropriate for me), but keep around for stuff like office gift exchange and the semi-obligatory "I don't really know you but apparently I'm supposed to give you a gift" situations. I also always give my mother a gift card to the grocery store for Christmas (although we don't celebrate it, she does, and it's a big deal for her so we go along with it). Usually I get her a new book and tape the card to a page about 3/4 of the way in but I think I might dig something really gawdawful out of the regift box, something that'll make her scrunch up her face and think "oh, UGH!", and tape the gift card to the bottom of it. :-) Also, Google "duct tape wallet" and "duct tape purse" for instructions on how to make a wallet or purse out of duct tape (there are even video instructions on YouTube, but my computer hates YouTube)....See MoreNeed Ideas for kids Christmas presents under $10 for 10 kids
Comments (20)Many of my ideas were hit by frugalwallflower and katlan. Personally, I don't like giving books unless the person is an avid reader who reads books many times over or are a book collector and you know what they want. Except of course something like coloring books or if they like the crossword puzzle books, word search* or something. Otherwise, books are the poster child for one-use clutter if they get used once. Why teach kids that? Cash is still a great gift. Gift cards are a distant second or third since so many gift cards just don't get used. Do you bake? With your handle, I assume you do. That age group loves cookies, bars, Krispie bars, brownies and much more. Nothing to be ashamed of giving a gift of food. Or mix it in with some of the other ideas. The real young with a coloring book, crayons or colored pencils and a plateful of goodies? Few wouldn't be in hog heaven. Younger would probably like Old Maid cards, and I don't know what classic board games go for these days but there might be an option too. The youngest ones should be very easy to stay under the $10 mark, even under $5 if you want to go the purchased present way. Older ones? Well, keep in mind they might be approaching driving age. Something for the car if they have one. A key fob, first aid kit or even tools. If they have a car, floor mats are usually needed. It's late to start now but if you're near Menards or Ace Hardware you can buy a lot of stuff free after rebate or super cheap after rebate. Examples, 25' tape measure, wrench sets, screwdriver sets, hats, t-shirts, etc. Flashlights are a great gift too. The little LED ones that go on a keyring are handy and useful. A decent flashlight is usable by most anyone. Other ideas for the older, near driving age, is an ice scraper for northern climate or sunshade for southern. Both can be had for a couple dollars. I'd say fire up the stove and oven. And look for some things they might need or find useful. I might sound like a broken record at times but I really believe in avoiding the trash presents, meaning the ones that are a waste of money since they won't be used, or won't be used more than once and will just wind up in the dumpster. Food and cash, most always get used and are still appreciated far more than the stores and "shopping addicted" want people to believe. *One year as part of the gift I made up some word search puzzles and gave to the kids and had a little contest. I made the younger ones easier puzzles than the older ones. WordPerfect had a feature in it that let you set up the puzzle and it would fill in random letters in the blank spaces so it was easy. I had a 1st, 2nd & 3rd place prize of $3, $2 an $1. (there were 3 kids so each got a token cash prize and I planned a small gift for each so each actually got the intended prize, but it was down as a prize for winning. They loved it....See MoreUgly Sweater parties....are they in your area?
Comments (15)Ugly clothes, not just sweaters, are all the rage for the teen/college crowd. I have a son and daughter, 17 and 19 and I am constantly on the lookout for ugly, but unique, "fashions" for them. My son, a senior in HS, especially likes the ugly clothes. I am amazed he will wear this stuff to school, but it gives me an incentive to try to outdo myself in the thrifting. But to try to get him to buy a pair of clearance jeans at Kohls, forget it!! They've go to be the most expensive pair at Zumiez, go figure....See MoreIdaClaire
