Have you considered pendant lights to light the kitchen island? These are available in a number of sizes and designs. IMO, higher lights might cast shadows over the working area. Just a possible option to consider.

I have a similar situation in a new house that I am building - we have a ceiling fan centered on an exposed beam with a 9 foot island running in the same direction. The island is narrow (25 1/4") at one end and widens at the middle to 42" at the other for stool seating. My lighting guy says to use a mini chandelier at the seating end and flank the fan with pendants.

After carefully laying this out (on my computer) I decided that the fan was too close to the pendants and would cause them to swing when the fan was on. (I used the fan blade as the radius to create a circle and placed the pendants as the lighting guy suggested.) I also was not keen on the mini chandelier. My design now uses pendants at the sitting end of the island and recessed cans (task lighting) for the skinny end.

I admit this doesn't solve your problem but a fairly heavy pendant shouldn't swing too much as long as the fan isn't running at full speed. Fan blade size and pitch may make a difference. Most common fans on the market at big box stores have a 6 degree to 9 degree pitch. This is less likely to cause large volumes of air to be circulated. Quorum fans have a 13.5 degree pitch and will make a bigger impact on air volume.
