Father posts a video response on Facebook to teen's ugly tirade

This is absolutely awesome.

The 15 year old posted this really ugly and foul tirade against her parents who make her work like "a slave" and then blocked her parents from her facebook account. Her father (who works in IT) reads it, and then posts this video in response.

It's really an amazing insight into what's wrong with so many lost teenagers today.

And the father says - in the end - that he's thinking about "putting a bullet through the laptop."

That father has had enough and he struck back in a way that his daughter and her friends understand. I applaud him, I don't think he is psycho at all. I do think shooting the laptop was over the top, I think cleaning the hard drive and donating it to a charity would have been a better choice.

The father said he left home @ 15. That probably boils down to ... either he had poor parents or he was an out of control teen. Seemingly, he went the "right" way. But one of the things that happened was that he missed learning how you interact with your children to gain their respect & cooperation.

He hacked her privacy on Facebook. She was venting to her friends about her parents. Nearly all teens do this & have *always* done it, & in the "modern" world it is done on Fb. Nothing she said was "way out there", imho, He could have used that info he hacked to look @ how *he* was interacting with his dtr & quietly worked on fostering better communication. He just ups the ante & goes for a show of force, coercion & big time drama. He's not showing her a "better way". He's alienating her. A lot of what he is saying is about himself.... me, me, me. You don't gain kids respect by demanding that they idolize how much you have done, how great you are, how hard you work,,,,, it just doesn't work that way. He's feeding his own ego with this video. Mr. IT man, I'm so smart I can hack my kids Fb & I can make this viral video (I'm sure he'll get his jollys there)... it would just be another whining father, but the gun.... yeah,,,,, that's the crowning touch, shoot the d@mn laptop... that will explode the YouTube world.

He's embarrassed her & isn't that part of his goal? Well, she has a ton of ways to embarrass him. He's lost all control, imo.

I have been dealing with this for 33 years. I tried everything suggested here. My husband has two daughters. i have no children of my own. i had to have a hhysterectomy when I was 25. i married my husband when I was 36 and happly single. He was too, after being divorced five years from his high school sweetheart,. She immigrated from South America to his small Southern town, when she was a young teen,. She was exotic and alluring to a naive teen. She had horrific underlying issues that to date have not been dealt with. Her mother was married when she got pregnant by another man and had her, supposedly to get out of the marriage. She left her and her older sister from her marriage, with her parents and moved to the United States. They joined her years later in my husbans’s small town.. Seven or eight years ago, my husband’s ex wife learned via genetic testing she had a brother who had used the same DNA testing service. He was adopted I suppose as an infant. Who knows how many others there could be. this behavior reminds me of a species of bird, the cowbird. They do nor rear their young themselves. They lay their eggs in the nest of other species, usually smaller in size. From the time they are hatched they are larger and demand more food. Very often the legetimate siblings die from starvation or are crowded out of the nest before they can fly and care for themselves. When both parents are not willing to work together post divorce about the children they created, put their needs and wants before that of their children, it is going to be a disaster in some way. Add to it someone with this background above, and a dupisaster is guaranteed. I am a young senior now. I was very idealistic when I married my husband. I also saw two teens neglected by a mother who was focused solely on her career. My husband came from a home of very modest means but well educated. he has a PhD in Engineering. He is an only child but spent his first seven years in his grandmother’s home with his parents and an orphaned female cousin (Depression era). He was surrounded by a very close knit family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. They all went to the same school and church together, gathered together often, and lived by the Golden Rule. I was born and raised in the South too, in very much the same way. The difference being iI lived in a much larger city and I am the youngest of three siblings, We have lost our parents and both of my siblings. My mother and siblings died within the past three years. There never was going to be a way for all of this to turn out well. . When the ex wife retired she had nothing left to do but focus on her children and our grandchildren. We do not understand her and never will. We should not have to. But we have been forced to live with the consequences of her behavior and the influence she has over her daughters and the grandchildren. We have not heard from our children and grandchildren in five years. For many years, while the ex was emplyed, we were in contact continuously, very happily involved. We lived n the same town with the ex and one daughter and her family, the other an hour away up untl Christmas of 2019.. In the beginning I thought it would be good for my husband’s ex and I to have a courteous relationship in order to manage the girls activities and stop the obvious and normal game playing children of divorce do to get what they want. I found out quickly that was never going to happen. I love my step daughters and grandchildren. so I did the best I could. But no matter what I did, I stepped on the ex wife’s toes, Multiply thar by two girls who were starved for what their mother could or would not give them for most of their lives. We got tired of being hurt by these two daughters and their mother. They abandoned us over a flurry of insane activy involving a divorced stepdaughter. She divorced her husband of 21 years in record time. They had accrued a lot of property, lived in a million dollare home. My stepdaughter drove a new Mercedes Benz. Six weeks after the divorce was finalized she got involved with a man who did not make enough money to pay his $350 rent and borrowed money from her. He lived in a hovel, with barely any decent furnishings, his clothing piled waist high in the corners of the room he slept in. He did not even empty his mailbox of junk mail. Instead he let it spill onto the ground and carved a niche out of what was packed into the box. He spent his days hanging out in a cafe, his nights in a bar, surrounded by women half his age. At nearly 50 years old he had nothing to show for his existence other than a short lived marriage that produced no children. He has a Bachelor’s degree in History. When my stepdaughter brought him to meet us he was dirty, unshaven, disrespectful, and talked only about beer and his mutt dogs. All of our red flags went up and have stayed up since. He has never done anuthing to change the first impression we had of him. He has only made it worse. My stepdaughter moved him in on top of her children, devastated by a divorce they were too young to understand or see coming. At some point thay went to the courthouse and got married. We do not know when. They had a coming out party in my stepdaughter’s home, calling it a Christmas party. We were traveling and unable to attend. When we learned of the marriage we were shocked. My stepdaughter had never spoken well of this man to us. She swore to us she had no plans of getting married. But when we reacted the way we did she flew into a rage. This was the beginning of the end. She was estranged from her mother who had desperately been trying to win her daughter back. Suddenly the perfect opportunity arose. Her mother fully embraced this creature my stepdaughter married. Thus began the campaign against us. Cruelty began first, hen alienation. we were so very naive about what was going on. Mockery and amusement at our bewilderment was constant. Then alienation when I confronted my stepdaughters’ behavior. All of this took too much out of us, We spent one last holiday season alone, surrounded by family, and two days later moved from our home of over 40 years. it is not easy beginning a new life at our ages but is so much better than how we were living. We love where we live no, which is on the opposite side of the continent from all of the pain and insanity. If the damage done does not cause us to lose our lives sooner than later then we have a chance at happiness again.

I personally hate TV--it makes me antsy, antsy, antsy. I can't stand to have it on unless I'm actually WATCHING it, and there are very few shows I can stand enough to waste my time on them (Smallville rules!!! anything w/ Superman) I don't like my kids to watch TV because i don't like the content, I can't control it because I can't see what it is before it happens. I also think a lot of cartoons are over their heads. And I hate commercials. The day my daughter came home from Grandma's, where she watches her 2 hours or less per week (though I swear I think it's more) and said, "Mom, do you know the hair you want can be the hair you have?" I almost called grandma right then and there to announce they wouldn't be coming over anymore. My societal objections to TV come from 2 places: a Nero Wolfe novel, and a study done in Canada on social interactions and how they changed w/ the advent of TV. In the Canadian study, they measured the amount of time spent in conversation, the ages of those conversing or interacting, and the topic of their interaction. There was a town that only in 1970 or so was able to get broadcast TV, so it was a great place to study. They found that cross-generational conversation plummeted, and that those conversations specifically (but all conversations) became more logistical, superficial, and less ideas-driven or emotional. Shallower, and about the stuff you HAVE to talk about, like pass the salt and what time are you getting out from work. In the Nero Wolfe novel, Archie Goodwin goes to some people's house to pick up clues and impressions, and they all file into a semidarkened room to watch TV and nobody talks to one another. He comments to us that the advent of TV has ruined investigations, because nobody talks anymore, and when they do they talk about TV shows instead of something interesting. When my kids watch a video (the only thing they're allowed to watch at home), they don't talk to each other (except to fight about who's bonking their feet against whom) or to anyone else. And I'm w/ you all the way, Stephanie, on the idea that we have to choose. (I love that "are you new here?") I also like Anita9's point that "those wonderful old shows" weren't necessarily so wonderful. And I think that kids approach TV differently. They've got a lot more competing for their time and attention--computer games, etc. We don't really remember that time period well--WE WERE KIDS!!! And we have romanticized anything we do remember (which is perfect normal). Also, I remember reading that w/ Game Boys they found that after the first year of kids being mesmerized, they actually didn't like to play w/ them very much anymore--they're become sated. I think that happens w/ people who watch a lot of TV. I, for example, grew up WITHOUT a TV. We didn't have one in the house until I was 17, and our rural town got cable TV as an experiment, so my dad got us a tiny B&W (I thought the Incredible Hulk was gray, and said so at school, LOL!). So I am mesmerized when it's on around me. I get sucked in, even if I don't want to be. I think a huge part of that is that I'm just not used to it. Other people I know can have it on as background noise and never even notice it; they all grew up with a TV going a lot. They feel lost when it's off and t e noise isn't there. I also read that the advent of the auto and of the TV correspond w/ the advent of obesity as a problem for children. I agree. I been looking hard for place closer to work then available at this time. As soon as I can get out of here the better. I can very easily head back to Washington State but I took on a good job here as a Strictures Technician on Boeing Aircraft for an MRO (Maintenance Repair & Overhaul) and will be making good money in the next year. Hopefully I can find a place soon enough. Shame of it is this kid has spent on many occasions time with his dad and things around here could not be better between us. We go places, laugh all the time and are pretty lined up with each other. Its what I signed on for until the evolution of her son started going down hill however, he has always been a bit of a manageable problem at times but now he stresses her out so bad shes off the rails at times. Anyway I agree with your advice which is the same advice given to me by my sisters and close friends but most importantly myself. Most recently he threatened to call the Sheriff telling them I threated to shoot him but they know of him because we have had the Sherriff here many times and we were told to file an unruly child report with the county clerk. We went there and they told us they needed to see her divorce papers and also the father would have to be on board. Well John didnt want to do it so that was that. If we were able and he acted out tge Sherriff would take the necessary actions if I had to call. The real problem I have right now and is a major part of why I need to get out of dodge asap is because of my other half and my different shifts, shes on 1st shift and Im on 2nd it leaves me home alone with the kid most if the day and he starts in, last week he got violent once again and got right in my face wanting to fight with nobody here, so I told him Im not getting into it with nobody here so Ill call the Sheriff. Well thats when he started yelling "good ill call and tell them how you just threatened to shoot me etc. Meanwhile that was his exact threat to me when he got in my face saying him and his friends will shoot me. I can wipe the streets with this kid, hes a spoiled brat who lies, steels, drugs etc and I don't want to be here alone because if some false report gets written i can and will lose my job and maybe even freedom. That day he called his mom lying as always and crying to her and she believes him. While this was going on I had his dad in the phone so he heard everything and knows how bad this kid is and so does she, then she posts on facebook " nobody threatens my kids etc" Right then I saisaid its time to move out of here fast. When ththis was happening it all stemmed from the night before when he was on drugs yelling at her and he never went toto sleep tge whole night. Anyway she wasn't answering my call when this was going on only to find out becausebecause he was on the phone with her crying about me. Then she posts thathat on facebook. So it proved that if shes not here Im getting the blame and if he did call the Sheriff she would side with him. Time to go. Two weeks ago he broke into my closet and took my riffle and started firing it off the back deck into the woods where there are houses on the other side. My nieghbor told me about that, he asked me if he was allowed and I said he is forbidden to even touch those riffles. He said yeah we didnt even know where the shots were coming from and even the road workers were ducking for cover. This a 13 year old kid whose mom grants him adult privileges, big mistake and if I get on him she takes his side. I told her about the riffle incident about a week later because I dont tell her anymore because it always gets turned around on me so I just removed all the riffles from the home. Turns she knew about it and never said anything to me. I told her you do relize if he struck anybody on the other side of those woods or anywhere, you go to prison for murder and possibly even John. In not legally responsible for this kid. Anyway this is getting to long winded, its so much longer of a story and all I can say is I dont even like coming home from work and once it gets that bad its time to leave. With all I have explained, its obvious its just not safe for me to be here any longer. God knows I put up with alot but God cant physically bear witness for me so its time to move on. Like you said she is not on my side and in the long run its only going to hurt the kid and maybe even her as time goes on and he contunes to get worse. Hes even pulled stolen credit cards fraud when he was 11 and 12 till we found out. But, never really got in any trouble. His parents are smart people to. Moms a nurse snd dads an engineer so we are not talking about uneducated people. I suggested bording or military school. I been pushing this kid to go into the Coast Guard. Two weeks ago I got special clearance at work and brought him up into the cockpits of the Boeing 767s I work on and a tour threw all the hangers and other airplanes in attempt to try and plant some seeds. Last month I aranged for him to come to NY to my Moms funeral where I have to admit he was on great behavior alone and miles away from Ohio. We stayed with very close friends of mine and he had a great time outside of my moms funeral proceedings. It was night and day. But I also had a man to man talk with him about it and he saisaid dont worry I know how to act, I laughed with him and said thats what Im worried about. Anyway once there I tried like always to show him some responsibility and arranged for him to be next to me and carry my moms coffin. He did wonderfull in NY with me and my family, I had mamany of them write to me telling me how nice he is and handsome etc. Why that all kinda changes at home is beyound me. I think he knows Mom is not around and Joe has support from his family if I get out of hand. His biggest problem is his mom doesnt engage in team work with me to reprimand him when hes out of line, instead she looks for every which way to turn t around and blame me mainly because im here or his teachers before he was kicked out of school or his dad. This is the key factor of why this kid is the way he is.

(((((((( hugs to you OP)))))))))))) I'm sure most of us can remember moments of great frustration, being at our wit's end, and really struggling with all things parenting. Like you, I looked to books to help answer my questions. When I was raising mine (now 23 and 19), most of my mom-friends were much more permissive than I was, which created quite a struggle for me. They were happy to let their kids get up and down from the table during meal time, to stay up till 11 pm, to dump the playdough in the livingroom. I didn't want to raise my children in the heavy handed manner my parents raised us, but these things just seemed like common sense to me. But because I was still finding my way, I questioned myself frequently, and would experiment with loosening the rules in some of these ways. Each time it created chaos in our house, which ultimately made me lose my temper, and completely confused my children. Finally I saw the light and decided that I had to be true to myself. I wanted a calm house, and for us that meant regular meal times at the table, regular bedtime, etc. I wish I had learned that earlier. Having said that, I still think there is great wisdom to be gleaned from many sources. But that wisdom should sit on top of your core self, not replace it. Another thing I read that stuck with me, and helped many times, was to 'think like a cop'. Some may read that and think that is just the opposite of kind, respectful parenting, but in fact it isn't. When a cop pulls you over, he is calm, but unyielding -"Hello, ma'm, did you realize you missed a stop sign back there?" -not, "For God's sake, you blew right through that stop sign!!!!" When you offer an excuse, he hears you, and is often empathetic, but rarely rips up the ticket. "I'm so sorry ma'm, and I sincerely hope your husband is out of the hospital very soon. Please take care." Now yes, I'm still mad, because I got a ticket... but notice, I'm a pretty damn careful driver after that. Just that visual helped me stay calm so many times with my kiddoes. I think you are very much on the right track with your emphasis on respect and empathy. Just as long as that doesn't turn into the child feeling that their needs, their wants and their feelings trump everyone else's. I've come to believe this (knowing some will not agree): If you do it right when they are pre-highschool, you will have an easier time of it than the parents who were very permissive earlier. I've come to believe it because it seems to have pretty much worked out that way among my friends. I'm not including families who have struggled with autism or other issues, particularly neurological -those of course are very different issues I know very little about. I think you can be doing everything right, and it can still feel very, very difficult at times. It's just the nature of the beast. But if you can lay your head down on the pillow most nights and feel you gave it your best, that you met your children with kindness and respect while training them to live successfully in the world, you can be proud.///

I don't agree with the gun part, and donating the laptop would have been more altruistic. But the kid knows her Dad works in IT and is capable of hacking, as you say, her FB. I don't see it as hacking, I see it as the kid using the Dad's laptop, in the Dad's home, with the internet connection the Dad paid for.

Maybe my perspective is different because I remember clearly the ways teenagers can drive parents to do things they would not normally do. I do like Arcy's suggestions also, and maybe this Dad should implement some of them.

Hmmm, lots of opinions both ways. And I agree on points both ways. I agree he could have donated the laptop, def the better idea, but his way really drove the point home to her.

As far as he hacked "her computer", "Her whatever", the rule in my house was, this is MY house. Neither of my kids ever made the mistake of saying this is my room and my stuff and you keep out. I flat out told them, I will go through your drawers, bookbags, phones, coat pockets, anything I want anytime I want.

I agree with take away the phone, tv, wii, computer and the damn bedroom door if you have to. I absolutely would do that. Hit them where it hurts.

Honestly, the teens now are ever worse than when my kids were teens just 5 to 10 years ago. The way they talk to their parents in the stores, schools, on tv etc, well, at least for me, I would have knocked my kids clear off their feet if they would have talked to me that way. And they knew it.

I guess the dad could have thought it out more, and planned his answer more, but I also think he was just pissed. That little girl needs her ass spanked. And you can blast me if you want, but that's what's wrong with kids now, everyone is afraid to discipline their kids, and afraid to be parents. There's a difference between beating a child and smacking their butts. Kudos to that dad.

When I was a teenager, I would often scream that I was going to call child services because I thought my mom was so mean to me, and she would say "go ahead, I'll even dial for you. If you would rather be taken away from everything you own, your friends, your school and go and live with strangers, be my guest" LOL It always worked, much to my annoyance.

She doesn't need her Dad's computer, her Dad's internet access, her Dad's home to have a Facebook account. It is her account. She didn't give him the password. He hacked it. I am sure she DID learn a big lesson... "I'll have to be even MORE sneaky with those things I don't want Dad to know." She'll double down for sure... that's what teens do.

But really this thing will morph into something neither of the 2 would have expected. Her rant on Fb was *private*... for her teen audience only. His... he wanted a lot of "atta boys".... & he'll get them. BOTH will receive tons of derisive comments. She'll have her supporters, he'll have his. And both will be torn to shreds. Dad is big time wrong for putting his problems with handling his teen out there for public consumption. For that matter he could have shot up the laptop without video. But no... he wanted to star in a YouTube video... he wanted a viral video. I think he might just have the makins of one. Yee Haw, cowboy!

Makes me wonder how this girl reacted. I understand the father's spin on it, but that didn't teach the girl anything, other than he has a bad temper.

I think shooting the laptop was completely wrong. Locking it away with a promise it could be returned IF ... would have been better.

I'm guessing now the father will have to go to Anger Management. The daughter, too.

One thing that seems to be agreed on is that "parents aren't parenting." I'm so far removed from that, I can't really comment, but it does seem to be a fact.

I do agree that the daughter learned those words at home. I hear those words on TV now, and I see some of those same words used here at the KT, so I guess they have become a part of the every day scene, to my sorrow.

It scares me that an IT person can hack a Facebook account. Another lesson to be careful what you post there.

Hannah sounds like a pretty typical 15 year old. They can be tough, for sure. I think Dad should have said what he said and punished her like he said he would, but not for the world to see. Bad choice. Humiliation never made someone love and respect you more.

Katlan, you took the words right out of my keyboard! The kids today are so much more worse and disrespectful towards adults than ever. You want to know why? Thanks to society and their 'spare the rod, spoil the child'. Oh no, let's not hurt Susie's feelings by giving her time out on a corner. Tell Tommy that it wasn't very nice of him to kill the neighbor's cat, but he's got to promise never to do it again. The kids today need an attitude adjustment big time. I thank the father in this video, however, I wouldn't have shot it, I would have thrown a pitcher of water inside of it, in front of her.

Back when my daughter was 16 and drove her truck over to a friends house to spend the night and I found out where she and the truck really was, my husband jacked it up and put it on blocks and removed the tires for 6 months. We told her that she can only go to school and work and she could walk or ride her bike. It worked... Years later she thanked us for being strict and hard on her, especially when so many of the kids she went to school with are on drugs, in jail/awaiting sentencing, or died from making bad choices. I wish more parents would be less scared and intimidated by their kids and learn how to be real parents.

I'm guessing if the guy is in IT, he may have access to laptops that are already dead. You take one that looks like your daughter's, toss it on the ground and put 6 rounds of bullets in it. Very dramatic (not).

The guy made a big deal about the $130 he just spent on it, I seriously doubt he would shoot it full of holes the next day.

I had the same list of "chores" when I was her age, plus I was the built-in babysitter and pool cleaner. And I couldn't lock my bedroom door on weekends because it was my job to relieve my mother of her duties on the weekend and one of my brothers got up at 6am. I hated it, but didn't really have it as bad as her because I did get paid .50ÃÂ¢ a week. I don't think that buys a text message on some plans these days. :-)

I understand the father's frustration and anger at the teenager, and clearly, he needed to respond to the tirade, but when the gun came out he lost me! Whether that was was an old useless laptop, or the one in question, that was just bizzare, and I hope someone is keeping an eye on that man!

I think a parent should definitely keep an eye on a child's FB page...it's the internet, not a personal diary. A parent should be watching it closely as kids can get in all kinds of trouble on the internet.

But I think he reacted in a childish manner. All he had to do was take her computer away or something.

I think if the daughter is bratty, she learned it from her dad. Is he 12? I also agree kids today amaze me with their disrespectful behavior and their greed wanting the newest expensive device. But really, shooting a laptop? Especially having spent $130 on it the day before. It should have been confiscated and kept locked up for 6 months and then returned with the provision it would go forever if she violated the rules.

It sounds like they've talked it out, worked it out. Lets not be too quick to judge what works in someone else's family :) This girl has a dad - maybe not a perfect dad - who loves her, how blessed is that.

I agree, teens and most children are different today. They have been and exposed to things we probably did not see or understand until after we were married and have kids of our own. I disagree with someone that says --they must have learned that from Dad or Mom or??? Just being alive in the world exposes us to many things we may or may not agree with. Please stop blaming the parents for everything. We are not perfect--just listen to what we did as kids and yes the kids hear that and yes they get away with alot. But we set the example. Kids need to learn that not everyone wins, many do fail, or don't get the blue ribbon, or a trophy, or a ribbon for participating. Failing is not always bad, many times it means you have to try again with a different approach.

Well as Grandmother of teens I'm here to tell ya they post crap like this behind their parents back all the time. Even the best of them. Who do you blame? The parents? Society? The freedom of the internet? Their peers? It really doesn't matter who's to blame, it is however important that a parent, when confronted with this kinda problem, fixes it. Was his way the best way? Maybe not, but crap, I didn't do everything right either. Did he just react at the moment? yes! Did he hurt his child? Was he abusive to her? No! So in reality, whether right or wrong, he fixed the problem.

I loved it and thought it must have had a lot of great shock value to his teen. Since things have since been talked out, it must have worked out ok.

I think a lot of the reaction has to do with the area where you live. In cities, you could never go outside and shoot anything. But in the rural areas, life is different. Here, everyone owns a gun, so it isn't as shocking.

I have lived around guns all my life. I own a gun. This house is full of guns. I live in a rural area. It has nothing to do with where you live & lack of gun experience/exposure, but for me it has everything to do with the his poor choices of how to deal with *normal* unruliness of a teen. He is showboatin' on Facebook now & getting lots of high 5's. Still doesn't change my opinion.

Sounds like he has a very good relationship with his exwife and they are parenting together and knew their daughter very well. Well, enough to find out she was humiliating her father who obviously did not abuse her.

They worked it out. Hope she learned something from the experience.

Will bet anybody money that there are plenty of kids her age who think she acted like a brat and needed to decide if she wanted to become a member of her family and quit treating them like a bank. Her rights in the family are NOT equal to her parents.

I could care less that he shotup the laptop. He is hardly a madman or a psycho.

I loved this! I wish I had had the guts to be 1/2 the parent this man is. I think the shooting of the laptop was great because it sends the message that his daughter will now have to work for another one. Remember,the dad mentions this is the 2nd time his daughter has done this on Facebook. She didn't learn from the first time. He is making sure she learns now. Good for him. I wish there were more parents that didn't worry about their kids "feelings" when it comes to punishing them. I truly don't see anything childish at all with this. He got on her level to make her really understand this time.

Summershine, I agree. Too many parents want to be "buddies" with their kids. I applaud this father for taking a strong stand. And I think (that's) the reason that this video went viral.

I'm so sick of kids these days I could just scream. I'm so darn thankful that I never had any and I do not regret it for one second! Just my sister's kids were enough to convince me never to have kids!

I don't think shooting up the computer was necessary but it certainly added theatrics! HA! But what I'd question is, how is that going to keep her off facebook? You can go to any computer connected to the internet and the fancy cell phones too and use facebook. He should have just taken it away and wiped the hard drive and he also needs to take away her Iphone(which I'm sure she has too!). May have said it but I haven't really read the details of the story...just to highlights of it. That's where "time outs" get ya...people are too afraid to punish kids these days so look what they have...a bunch of ungrateful spoiled brats!

Shooting the laptop was a bit over the top but, overall I applaud the Dad. During the Winter months I work in an Emotional Behavior Disorder classroom in a local high school. Two thirds of the kids that are in there are there because they've never had an ounce of discipline their entire lives. Kids are given everything they want and not required to earn anything.

kaycee2002 - we also raised our boys with respect and received respect from them. However, there were times when as teenagers they tried to "do their own thing" regardless of what we said was or was not acceptable. All children will try the same thing at one time or another and parents who do not believe that are just hiding their heads in the sand.

So, my answer to your question of "When you get down to it what did this guys daughter learn???" is - maybe next time she will obey and/or believe her father when he tells her what is acceptable and what is not, because she has seen he will follow through with punishment.

I most definitely agree with those who have said that a high percentage of today's kids are more mean, selfish, spoiled, disrespectful and narcissist than any other generation in the past. And parents are more weak spined. They are afraid to spank - yes, I believe in swatting their little fat butts - as well as deny their child whatever their little heart desires, whenever it is desired, regardless of what it costs. Come on.....just who is the parent and what is a parent's role in all this? Aren't we the ones who are supposed to set limits, teach skills and coping behaviors, instill morals and try our dead-level best to raise respectful, productive, well-rounded children who will be highly regarded for those traits and welcomed into any society?

As to his shooting the laptop - I would suppose he bought the laptop with his money, so it was his choice to do whatever he wanted to with it. Cleaning the hard drive and giving it to a school that is underfunded would have been good, but again, it was his choice. Not ours!

I still think the father is a jerk. Count me in the minority. The kid was a brat. If the dad had an ounce of sense after spending $130 the day before on the expensive laptop, he would have cleaned the hard drive and taken the laptop to a needy kid who doesn't have one and have the daughter give it to them. I don't ever get the gun culture. It's partly what's wrong in our society.

I would like to check back in about 5 years to see the outcome...I guess that will never happen, I will hold my judgements, because I honestly don't know if this is over the top or real, real tough love.

I remember complaining to my friends about my parents. I think that's probably what the kid was doing - complaining about her hard life. Kids today do the blaming on facebook as this is their outlet. I don't blame the father for posting this, I probably would have also but there's no way I would have shot the computer. I'm not against guns - I'm against ruining things that are expensive. Except for shooting up the computer, I can't blame the father for going a little craxy. So I wonder how future kids will complain about their parents?

My father taught me that two wrongs never made a right. This is an excellent example. I learned about love and respect from and for my parents. Sadly, I do not see this happening in this family.

I'm appalled at the way he handled the situation. I mean, it's great that he's involved with his child, but his reaction was way over the top IMO....a public rant followed by shooting a gun. Really??

All my mother would have had to do was give me "the look" and I would have apologized to her and sat myself in the corner for a while. But truthfully, I would never had spoken about my parents, particularly in public, the way that girl did.

Ok, I have to say it...Kids these days! and...Parents these days! LOL

I can't believe some of the responses here. Thankfully when I was raising my teens we didn't have any problems that were this bad, but I totally agree with this dad.
My problems with my teens never got this bad because when they screwed up and I told them what would happened if we had the same problem again, they believed me. I'm so sick of wishy washy parenting. Time out and let's talk about this doesn't seem to be working for todays kids. There was no time out at my house and the talks were one sided--I talk and you listen. Not the perfect parent by any means, but I raised 2 kids to adulthood, and they are great people now, in other words, I didn't scar them for life.

oh, and another thing, just because he shot a computer does not make him a violent person or jerk, just a parent of a teen. There are problably a lot of parents who have grown children sitting in jail cells all across the country who wish they had shot a computer, phone or video game, and would have gladly, if it would have kept their kids from really screwing up later in life.

I'm betting it was her parents. So they need to stand up and own it and start treating her with respect and just maybe she will return it.Children learn by example and she obviously has some crappy examples in her life.

Too much "respect" towards kids can really backfire as well. I see a lot of young people in the workforce who were raised to believe that their opinion matters because their parents didn't want to harm their fragile self-esteem while thinking that their precious kids were capable of making adult decisions.

Sounds good on paper but in reality, many of the kids evolve into self-absorbed young adults who don't respect their employers because they realized at a young age that there were no real consequences to defying authority. They could get away with it by having a "discussion" afterwards about what they did wrong and what they learned from it instead of paying dearly for their mistakes, lol. The whole "to get respect you have to give it" has much less meaning in the professional world where you're being paid to do a job and there are plenty of people who would love to have that job instead.

My mom wasn't perfect by any means but she made it clear that if I didn't want to live by her rules, I could leave, and my thoughts on the matter were not welcome. And I knew she meant it. There were times growing up where I would get frustrated but I am so glad now because it made me into a fearless and independent adult with a solid career and a healthy respect for my superiors.

Let me say one more thing:

From all the talks and media attention this teenager has had, she will swiftly recalibrate herself when she remembers that iconic moment when:

boom, boom, boom and boom he shot up her laptop,

There are parents everywhere saying a strong 'Yes' as they make their children stand beside them watch it then cheer the moment topped off with a scoop of ice cream for everyone.

And, I also believe that,I believe, that was a teaching moment throughout all of modern society. This father could be The Man of the Year.

I have refrained from commenting because I do not have children, (1 stepdaughter) but I think what he did deserves a little praise.
I read the link that Wildchild provided above and he sounds to me like a pretty great dad.
His methods may not suit all, but he obviously knows his kid and what works with her.
He has repeatedly made his comments and replies strictly through his facebook page. He has turned down many, many requests for interviews because he 1. does not want him or his daughter to profit in any way from this. And 2. Wants his words to remain his...not be edited to say something twisted.
I clearly remember some pretty harsh punishment when I was a belligerent teen. I was never physically disciplined, but I remember as if it was yesterday how mad my father was and I never wanted to cross that line again...and never did. I love my father dearly as I know he loves me. I survived and grew to have a much deeper respect for parenting. (he and Mom raised 6 girls!)
I think this man may have acted a little irrational, shooting her computer but certainly turned it into a teachable moment. I dont care if it could have been donated or not...it was their property, their punishment.
I applaud him for the act of following through with his discipline. ( I think this is where many drop the ball and kids know it)
He and his daughter I believe have bonded over this experience. As he mentioned...she will never again doubt his commitment to following through on doing what he says he will do. (good or bad)
