You really need to look at the photometric data for the LED you're planning to use. And then adjust placement based on your lighting needs/desires. Frankly, I'm of the opinion that too many cans can always be dimmed while maintaining placement. Realizing you don't have enough life after the fact makes for lousy can placement or a lot of work/expense rearranging things.

Spacing depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you're trying to make sure a surface is evenly lit then you can use the beam angle of the bulbs, the distance between the ceiling and the lit surface, and a little trigonometry to figure out what spacing makes sense. For example, bulbs with 30-degree beam angles, on an 8' ceiling, could be spaced 51" apart (or closer) and light the floor evenly. If the intent was to light a vanity top, the maximum spacing would be more like 33". The thing is, this isn't an office building and you don't have to plan lighting to accommodate cubicles that could be moved around down the road. You can afford to arrange fixtures to highlight what you want highlighted, because sinks, tubs and toilets don't typically move around. The total amount of light these five 35w bulbs would produce is probably a decent guess, but I'm not sure you'll want them pointing straight down as if the floor were their primary targets. Focussed, direct light is likely to seem a little harsh, shadowy and unflattering. Who wants to be in a spotlight when sitting on the toilet? Also, a brightly lit floor and dark walls will make the room feel small and cave-like. I'd be inclined to look for ways to make the light indirect wherever feasible, by bouncing it off walls and ceilings.

David, I did try the bulb you recommended and I did not feel it had enough Lumens for my needs in the kitchen so I knew I would not like it in the office. Thank you for caring and trying to help. I may still move the bulbs down a little bit in the light (waiting for electrician to stop by to help me) to see if this would help any. I can't seem to figure out how to get more light in the dining room now as the bulbs surrounding the middle changed to LED Fixture are not where I need the light and if I move them from not being on top of a cabinet, then they are not even in distance from the middle light. I wonder if I sold my townhouse and made the lights not even, if this would cause me problems. I think the following bulb if it was much cheaper would have suited my needs and if it came in an Edison Base. I wish I went with 12 recessed cans instead of 8 recessed cans now. I was given the option but the other electricians said 6 or 8 so I thought 8 would be good. Rantontoo, Each manufacturer should list this information for their product. It is usually in the specifications for the lights. I am just using Contrast lighting as an example. They listed it as Specification on the particular fixture. Light spread information: See page 5 and the table named light cone describes how the light spreads at different heights based on the fixture. Something similar should be available for your lighting manufacturer. Good luck!
