Instructions for cleaning F&P Washer....moldy odor

I haven't been on the laundry forums in a while....luckily everything has been running well....

but I seem to be having moldy/musty odor problems in my Fisher and Paykel Washing Machine GWL11.

I remember reading something in a thread somewhere about tips/instructions for cleaning the washer.

I think the first thing was to try dishwasher detergent or something???

But I also think someone (dadoes?) posted instructions for taking apart the interior to clean the inner basket and tub...to clean any soap buildup....

if I remember correctly, I think it had photos too?? not sure though...

Unfortunately, I tried the search feature (I apologize in advance), but I couldn't come up with it...

anyone?

ive never broken down the washer before, so i dont want to break something....then the wife will really be mad at me....

If you must have outdoor venting, you can go used - and look online for a nearby seller (on craigslist, backpage, eBay etc.) of a Thermador oven of your needed dimensions from the late 1990s or earlier, before they were bought out by Bosch. Their ovens of this vintage had a unique design that (optionally) could be vented and ducted outdoors so the kitchen stays cool and it doesn't spread oven smells through the kitchen. These ovens can be identified easily by their small door windows, simple knobs for setting temperature and such (rather than electronic keypads), open-door broiling, no gasket around the door frame area, and a white and blue glossy interior coating that stays clean looking by itself. Model #s on the last units to use this design were typically CT127 or CT230 (for a single 27"w oven and a double 30" oven respectively.) White, black, and stainless steel were available, in 30", 27" and maybe 24" widths, single or double. There was also a CMT version that's similar to GE's current "Trivection" ovens that incorporate a microwave oven in one of the double ovens - these are a few inches taller than usual though. Great oven design if you can find one in good shape, and there are still plenty out there since they built this same basic oven for decades - other than older-looking control panels and more use, I'd have no problem using older models; they're just as good in the key areas. The hard part is adding proper ductwork (and a fan? never installed one myself); hopefully all of the ancillary parts are still available.

Weve had issues with our new bosch dishwasher as well. First if all, the installation process is a pain-we had bought it to replace our old dishwasher which was fairly new but in order to install the bosch dishwasher, we had to have an electrician and plummer come to rewire and reroute/set up the water lines correctly for the thing to even run. Then we had issues with the power cord and had to have a technician come out and repair/fix that. I also hate how you cant control it/buttons arent accessible unless the door is open. There is inadequare space for dishes, doesnt effectively clean dishes even with high quality dish detergent, rinse aid, and meticulous placement of dishes. Lastly, its annoying how it gets stuck on auto and you have to reset the thing and rerun it just so you can switch to a different mode. I have used many different brands throughout my life-rented in my 20’s and early 30’s including whirpool and LG and never had issues.

Are you sure it's a sewer smell and not grossness in your washer? I got rid of my 6 year old ecosmart washer a couple months ago because it broke, but I was happy that it broke because it stank horribly starting when it was about 6 months old. I always left the lid open and used HE detergent but still the washer stank horribly of mildew/mold/general disgusting funk. I had to run cleaning cycles with bleach about once a month to keep the stench at bay, and even then it was there, it just wasn't unbearable. All I know is that you couldn't give me another F&P washing machine - never again!

Soft water and a hot water hook up will raise the likelihood of etching. If you have and use a china/crystal setting in the dw then i suggest the cost to have the plumber redo it. i had to do that with my Optima. If there is no china/crystal setting then it doesn't matter -- but that setting is the one reason I bought the DW. It works very well for my wine glasses and the vintage stemware. You can find out how hot the water is by running it for a while and sticking an instant read thermometer in the stream. Mine is about 125F f.ex. But that's above the 110-115 range for china/crystal. The machine has a heater so I think it's easier to have the cold water heated to the right temperature for that cycle. I recently tried the Ecover Zero tabs. Someone sent me a few. Very nice result on the few I tried. Have just bought a box but don't have long term use comment as yet. Yes, cutting the Method tabs is a bore. I usually do it when I open the bag. But I have found the results to be worth the work. And inexpensive. Perhaps you will have no etching. i hope not. Cutting back on soap will help.

I have some pictures showing F&P disassembly, but I don't think you need them. It's very simple.

1. Unplug the machine. Shut off the faucets and remove the water supply hoses from the machine. Remove the lid. Carefully pry out the two lid bumpers and remove the screws beneath.

2. Pull the tub toward the left-front (so the OOB lever that protrudes down from the console at the right-rear can clear the tub), and raise the top. Helps to have an assistant to hold the top up.

3. Unclip the bias spring from the left-front suspension strut, leave it attached to the tub ring. Unsnap the tub ring all the way 'round and remove it.

4. Take off the softener dispenser, reach inside the agitator and unscrew the wingnut, remove the agitator.

5. The inner basket should now simply lift out of the tub. If it's ornery, remove the three screws and take off the drive hub and coupler. The perfs on outside of the basket are sharp, so handle it carefully.

6. Clean up the basket and inner tub as necessary.

7. Reassemble. Don't forget to pull the tub again to clear the OOB when lowering the top. Don't forget to reattach the bias spring. Don't overtighten the agitator nut. Don't tighten the supply hoses any more than needed to not leak, the valve body is plastic, don't want it to crack.

If you want to run the pump with the basket out to drain the scrub-water ... lower the top and replug the machine. With the power off, press and hold Wash Temp Down, then press Power at the same time to get into Diagnostic mode. The Regular cycle button then toggles the pump on/off. Press Power to exit diagnostics. You can also run the pump by simply advancing the cycle to Spin, but the drive motor will keep pulsing forward and back to test for the basket's inertia and may throw a fault code. That's no big deal, just kill the power and spin again as needed to get the water out.

To help prevent smutz build-up in the future, go light on softener, don't underdose detergent to insure soil and oils are dissolved and flushed away, avoid washing in only cold water. Also, you can run a cleaning cycle occasionally with an enzyme dishwasher detergent if you think that'd be helpful.
