Miele T9800/T9820 Dryer heat question

My new Miele Super Capacity Dryer (T9800) dries clothes really hot. If I use the "Normal" setting, clothes remain quite damp. If I use the "Extra Dry" setting, the clothes are for sure totally dry, but on the verge of being crisp. I've been using "Extra Dry" with the "Gentle" option, as the manual says using the "Gentle" option will reduce the heat. Well, several times I've opened the door during the middle of the cycle, using "Extra Dry and Gentle"...and the heat is insane hot. Is this normal? The build quality and materials used for the Super Capacity Mieles are amazing...but the dryer is somewhat bipolar. Also had one of the first T9820 gas dryers in the USA...and it also was super annoying! Thanks!

I use normal on most of my cycles. I do get the occasional damp item, but I would rather that than torch my laundry. I hear there are firmware, filter and a few other updates that Miele can address on the 9800/9820. Contact Miele and have them take a look.

Why did you switch to electric? Do you find one quieter or better performing that the other?

Hi Maven,

I had the first batch of T9820 gas dryers (Miele's first gas dryer model). It was LOUD, the clothes were so inconsistently dry...either super damp, or crispy dried and creased. Also, I never thought they smelled fresh after being dried. All of Europe (and most of the world) uses Electric dryers. The heat is a lot more consistent & even, and electric dryers are A LOT quieter than gas dryers.

I have the absolute newest filter for the T9800/T9820 models. I can ask about firmware/software updates, but my unit has a build date of 5/2009...so I'd be surprised if anything applies to my unit, but ya never know.

Isn't it funny how the manufacturers would like us to believe that their machines are such baskets of high technology, but when it comes down to the core functionality it's all about physical connections? When the Miele service technician opened up my dryer, I must say that I was disappointed to see a highly touted product like Miele use such a rudimentary method for moisture detection. Of course I have no idea how other manufacturers deal with this issue, but to see a connector "riding on a rail" along the outside of the drum just seems very low-tech to me and something that could be improved upon.

My laundry room is a long narrow room the washer and dryer are at opposite ends with the door near the washer. The problem I can see is the door is to the right of the washer and I'm afraid when I open the washer it will block the door or worse i wont be able to open the washer door enough to load it.Our laundry is different from yours, but our washer is located against the wall, and in the thoroughfare of the exterior door of the laundry. The edge of the washer is 8 1/2" from the wall. The face of the washer's glass door is in line with the exterior door's edge (not the door jam, but the actual door edge). How big is the door? Can it open 180 degrees?The door is 21" in diameter. It falls short of opening a full 180 degrees owed to the how the door is fitted into the front fascia. The bulbous glass in the door protrudes into the interior of the washer's drum approximately 6". Given the location of our unit, with the dimensions above, the door opens approximately 55 degrees which is enough to easily load the washer. If you review and calculate your dimensions using your space and the W4840 Product Dimension Sheet I can give you an approximate door swing for your space. Can you get to the back leveling feet from the front?This is best accomplished from an unimpeded side of the washer. The washer weights 290 pounds, so jockeying it around while on the ground can prove, well, frustrating. Once leveled you are pretty much set. Another trick is to determine the level of your floor before pushing the washer into place, and doing some leveling based upon your findings while you can easily access the feet. Can it handle a king size comforter?Yes. I can use either gas or electric for the dryer. Is one better than the other?We have the T9820 gas model, and have no electric model to compare it with. If you have the option of which to install check your utility rates in making your determination.

mrb627 "How much time does the EXTENDED WASH option add to the wash cycle?" I can only speak for my W1986 unit. How much time is added depends on what cycle you select. It will add a different amount of time for cottons a different amount for perm press different amount for delicates..and so on. It also depends on how long it took the machine the last time I used that cycle and that temp with the extended option. Finally after the machine starts it will sense the size of the load and reduce even the extended time if the load is not full. The last time I used extended on a cottons cycle of 140F the initial time displayed was 1 hour 41 minutes. However after the machine determined the load size the time got reduced to 1 hour 15 minutes. The initial regular time for this type of load(wash, three rinses, with spins between) is 54 min. at 140F and 49 min. at 120F. Even this will get reduced to about 36 if the washer is not full. The other thing about extended on my machine is that it treats the rinses different. You get a long rinse, a short rinse with longer soak pauses,and a longer final rinse. On the regular cycle all of the rinses are the shorter length but the middle rinse still has the longer pause which allows the clothes to soak a bit in the water. The final difference is that the machine will allow more time to balance the load for the final spin and the final spin is longer. This is for the W1986. I have no experience with the newer washer so cannot say how it operates in the extended mode.

I was struggling a bit with my machine-I wasn't sure what to expect as far as noises and what not. Turns out, it is the drain pump making "the noise" and it is perfectly normal. I love my warsher! she is a tank! I would love to buy another for sure. I did a bit of searching thru here and found ways to increase water levels, add rinses etc. On a side note, I found a full size t9800 dryer on Kijiji (5 hours away) and bought it. Not sure if it actually works or not, haven't brought it downstairs yet. I am hoping like heck it does LOL! it came with a pedestal as well. For now, I am running my 4842 washer with a Kenmore dryer. I have a Samsung washer off to the side, and will be hooking up my Miele dryer whenever I can get enough hands on deck to bring it down my stairs of doom. I plan on running all 4 machines in the near future. haha@ laundry unicorn! *powdered unicorn horn anyone?* is something I always say when I feel like I am being asked an impossible to answer question. Not sure where you live, but there is a Miele unboxed store in Ontario that I would dearly love to check out-however, I am in SK!

The drying programs have three settings:
2. Moister
3. Standard (factory default)
4. Drier
There is also an Extended Cool-Down that has both a five (5) and ten (10) minute that can be added onto a program. I do not know whether you can accomplish this programming while on the telephone with Miele (there are series of button sequences that can be pushed to access the dryer's computer) as I had ours changed, along with a firmware upgrade that was available, by a Miele Service Representative.

We had our adjusted to the Drier setting, and the ten minute Extended Cool-Down added. All programs work well now.

Thanks Fahrenheit! Our last 2 dryers (Electrolux and Samsung) allowed you to set the heat temp. Electrolux even had something like medium, medium-high, high, extra high and maximum high. Clothes dried in both the Electrolux and Samsung, did seem softer and not as crispy (although it's so important that the Miele rotates both ways...crucial for sheets and blankets!).
