Considering a 4 year old Miele w4840 and t9800

Our 4 year old Samsung washer just went (the bearings) and it will be $900 to fix it. Sigh.

We would love to replace it with a Miele washer (with their 10 year warrantee promotion on right now), but they are just too small. I found a 4 year old set on kijiji (Canadian Craigslist) of a w4840 and t9800, which is the perfect size for us. After getting burned by the Samsung, we want something that will laaaaaaaast.

The owner says they are in perfect working order, he just moved houses and took them with him. He says the door gasket has a mark (I have read some of these were replaced under warrantee but he did not have that done). He does not have the shipping struts. He did not buy the extended warrantee. We can get service in our town.

If we do not get this set, we are looking at an Electrolux 70 series, but they are very hard to find here in Canada. We are a bit concerned with future repairs and parts.

Does anyone have any advice? Thank you :)

Never mind, we found a brand new 4842 - my laundry unicorn! :)

Yes, the LG is a fine-looking and feature-loaded machine but if you wash that amount of laundry... I'd highly recommend the Miele washer and dryer. My opinion is that, while LG has all the gadgets and whistles one could imagine, Miele is more about just getting the job done as good as possible. While Miele's advertising is not as exciting to read as LG's, I'm always amazed at how well the washer adapt to each different load of laundry; washing and spinning profiles change all the time, depending on what you're washing - even without 6Motion. The Miele dryer is smaller than the LG one but its reverse-tumbling helps a lot. It's also very fast. Yes, the ColdWash on the LG is cool but, if you're into washing big loads, you should read that excerpt from the owner's manual about the ColdWash option, which basically states to reduce the load size to 40% of what the washer could hold: "For high wash efficiency, it is recommended to use less than 8 pounds." A couple of sanitary cycles with LCB did the trick on the gaskets. Only thing I had to so was on 1 cycle, I took a cloth to wipe the upper part of the gasket, threw some old towels in (to make a higher water load) and the gaskets are perfect. Inner, Outer, Backside of inner, etc. I must have done 6-10 loads of Sanitize, with 2 of them using dishwater powder and the rest LCB. Next is the outer drum. LCB did break up the top layer of whatever was on it. Assuming it's BioFilm, etc, any other suggestions on what will cut it without any mechanical agitation....Just short of me opening up the beast. I did not have citric acid on hand, so I used up 5 packets of descaling powder I use on my coffee machines. In removed very little bit of the biofilm when using this.. I need something that will do it ~ALOT MORE~ . Trying to see if I can get this clean chemically before I attempt to open the panels up..to get access

Congratulation! Should match you by next Monday. Traveling this week, so looked at a W4840 in a store that had power. The interface is a lot better than just looking at manual. Good! Overall, I think I like it better than the W4800 interface now and you get the added functions. It does have a graphic of HS spin and temp- not good as separate LED, but it works. Just need to pony up $200. So I have shifted on this after using both from a interface consideration and missing the functions. Otherwise, the washers are fundamentally the same build quality. Also, bored, had a few minutes and found a store with a Maytag Bravo and WP Duet hooked up to water. Sorry, TL folks, but Maytag Bravo is just FL with drum in wrong direction. LOL. On the Duet, it seemed functionally ok. Miele must have more sound deadening, since it is quieter even with store noises. Per dealer, it was the top Duet FL at $1400. It was ,IMO, noticeably cheaper build quality with no heater except on Sanitary. The dryer seemed to have both plastic on inside/external door and painted interior. Asking price $1100. I paid $1200 for Mile T9800 with solid SS honeycomb with not moving back and two glass doors. What I really was interested was the water levels- a concern on the W4800, as noted in prior post. Both on wash and rinse about the same as the Mile W4800. Welcome to the 2007 new EPA washers. So Miele was no worst on water level. Miele quality/heater is important, IMO. Noticed the Duet took over 10 minutes trying to balance a load- towels where stuck on drum, so nothing would change. It just gave up and went into a a HS spin with stuck towels and make some knocking noise for a few seconds. It was on concrete floor with pedestals. Vibration about the same as my 2nd flood with no pedestal on 1 1/2 plywood. This was encouraging also. HS spin noise about the same- i.e. neither has any jet sounds. So let us know your experience. So unless my new Miele W4840 has issues like the other machine I had, I really see Mile as the clear quality leader. If you have inclination/ability to spend about $600 more for the Mile, it seem you get the value back in quality. Oh, also saw the new Whirlpool steam dryer and got a brochure.

mrb627 "How much time does the EXTENDED WASH option add to the wash cycle?" I can only speak for my W1986 unit. How much time is added depends on what cycle you select. It will add a different amount of time for cottons a different amount for perm press different amount for delicates..and so on. It also depends on how long it took the machine the last time I used that cycle and that temp with the extended option. Finally after the machine starts it will sense the size of the load and reduce even the extended time if the load is not full. The last time I used extended on a cottons cycle of 140F the initial time displayed was 1 hour 41 minutes. However after the machine determined the load size the time got reduced to 1 hour 15 minutes. The initial regular time for this type of load(wash, three rinses, with spins between) is 54 min. at 140F and 49 min. at 120F. Even this will get reduced to about 36 if the washer is not full. The other thing about extended on my machine is that it treats the rinses different. You get a long rinse, a short rinse with longer soak pauses,and a longer final rinse. On the regular cycle all of the rinses are the shorter length but the middle rinse still has the longer pause which allows the clothes to soak a bit in the water. The final difference is that the machine will allow more time to balance the load for the final spin and the final spin is longer. This is for the W1986. I have no experience with the newer washer so cannot say how it operates in the extended mode.

Thanks wrungout! I don't even like laundry and I am super excited - I am suddenly a laundry geek! Please tell me alllll about your machine :)

We would love to get the matching dryer, but this was an unexpected purchase so we can't afford it right now. We are going to keep our Samung dryer for now (4 years old) and we've already replaced the heating element last year so hopefully it will keep kicking for a while. And hopefully by then, Miele will come to their senses and realize North Americans want BIG machines that are built to last. Or I will beg for it for Christmas ;)

I was struggling a bit with my machine-I wasn't sure what to expect as far as noises and what not. Turns out, it is the drain pump making "the noise" and it is perfectly normal. I love my warsher! she is a tank! I would love to buy another for sure. I did a bit of searching thru here and found ways to increase water levels, add rinses etc.

On a side note, I found a full size t9800 dryer on Kijiji (5 hours away) and bought it. Not sure if it actually works or not, haven't brought it downstairs yet. I am hoping like heck it does LOL! it came with a pedestal as well. For now, I am running my 4842 washer with a Kenmore dryer. I have a Samsung washer off to the side, and will be hooking up my Miele dryer whenever I can get enough hands on deck to bring it down my stairs of doom. I plan on running all 4 machines in the near future. haha@ laundry unicorn! *powdered unicorn horn anyone?* is something I always say when I feel like I am being asked an impossible to answer question. Not sure where you live, but there is a Miele unboxed store in Ontario that I would dearly love to check out-however, I am in SK!

Wow, I should ship my laundry over to you ;) Are you using the Miele detergent or the Persil or something else? We currently use the Nature Clean powder, it is for HE machines, but not sure about a Miele. What are your favourite settings or custom options?

I have printed the cheat sheets and put them in page protectors.

We are just North of Toronto, but the unboxed store didn't have any washers. We actually got our machine through Miele Canada - they have 30 w4842s in stock! Apparently they are hard to find in the system but they are there. We get it delivered on Wednesday and installed on Thursday.

I hope your dryer works and it is amazing!

I got mine from Miele Canada as well:) when I first was debating about buying the washer, the dryer WAS available, but isn't any longer. I use Persil, I really like it. I am sensitive to scents, and I can totally handle Persil, it rinses clean. I wish I knew someone in Germany that travelled back and forth, you can buy humongous boxes of it over there, for considerably cheaper than I can get a small-ish box here. Cross your fingers for my dryer. I am torn about the pedestal, I may end up selling it, as DH has a plan to lift all 4 appliances up onto a plywood stand. I haven't had a whole lot of time to fiddle around with many options. I mainly use express.
