Going rate for piano lessons?

Found lessons for Jordan and Aaron offered at $432 each. One hour classes for twelve weeks. That is $36 per hour. I'm sure that's a good price but still wondering the going rate in other areas.

I'm on Long Island, NY.

My husband is a retired HS music teacher and now gives lessons in the home...he goes to you.

He charges $25 a half-hour. Where we live (Metro NY), he is inexpensive!

Price goes by where you live and experience/education of the tecaher.

That sounds about right. I'm in the Midwest and we pay $15 for a half hour for my child. Our teacher played professionally.

If you are going to a 'place' to get classes, they are probably going to run a little more to offset the company expenses. I would consider looking into finding someone in your area that may be retired and/or teaching part time even from home. You can usually work with them more if you need to change the dates or times for trips or illnesses, and vary the number of lessons to your kids' specific needs and schedules, (you can also drop out if you want) etc.. I've never heard of signing up for piano lessons around here for like 12 weeks in advance. Do these 12 weeks sessions piggyback and keep going without breaks? Will they be with the same teacher? Is it like at a music store or the YMCA? Just remember if your kids like piano and you decide to stay with it, lessons will probably go on for years so you may want to find an individual teacher you can stay and work with.

p.s. Personally I'd do half hour classes if you have the choice. They should be of a bigger benefit to your child and a better financial decision for you. I know about 15 kids who take piano (with like 4 different teachers) and they all do half hour -- 2 busy kids do every other week instead of everyweek. The one hour lessons sound generally like a money maker to me - why bring in a teacher for only a half hour if you can do an hour? At $15 for a half hour per week, I budget $750 a year for piano lessons for my one kid. You should be able to find something similar if you don't live somewhere overly expensive like New York. You may even be able to get a break on the second kid if you piggyback the lessons.

Thanks for your ideas and responses, everyone......and for talking me off the ledge LOL! I will definitely keep them awhile. It may be that my eyes just need to adjust, and 3dogs, after seeing all of those high cocktail tables in the blog (thank you!) these look better. I think my old table looks better with the cane back chairs, and the new tables look best with the new/old chairs. So I think I need to make a decision on what piece or pieces mean the most and work around that. I've got to go sing at a wedding this afternoon so can't get caught up in playing with these too much today, but I will do it next week. I already took the suggestion so many of you made to eliminate the side table I already have, and it looks much better. I brought one of the new tables down from the attic, and my eye is adjusting to that now, especially since the side table is gone. I do agree that the tables are pretty darn awesome and not something you see every day......that's what makes this so hard!

Spitzer & the $$ lessons it teaches for all spouses
Q

To me this whole thing about Spitzer is the proverbial much ado about nothing. Put it in simple terms: The guy went to a hooker a few times a year. Big deal. They can certainly afford it, they're not spending the infant's formula money on cigarettes and lottery tickets and as said, she gets her relaxation in other ways. She probably knew all about it anyway. This idea he had these massive amounts put aside to support a concubine is laughable. And seeing the reports of him being involved in a prostitution ring were made solely to imply he was a pimp. He wasn't. Each couples financial situation is different and to try to pidgeonhole all into the same one doesn't work for me. I know people where one handles everything; some where they do it together totally, others that have financial managers and some that are a combination. Seldom have I seen that each spouse doesn't have some money "of their own" so to speak to use in their own way, whether it's to buy stuff for themself, gifts for the spouse or whatever. There is an interesting question here though. If I knew someone was funneling money away from their spouse, I'd be hardpressed to not say something unless I really disliked the spouse tremendously. What would you do?

I second half-hour lessons for beginners. Also, pay attention to Carla's questions. They're important points.
