Miele W1918 doesn't work - ideas?

Hello, all you smart Miele people.

As I posted earlier, we bought a used W1918 and T1516C a few months ago, without being able to test them because the seller did not have the proper electrical hookup.

So, we finally have the laundry closet properly modified to accommodate these babies, including changing the electric to 240, and it seems that the washer does not work. The dryer powers on, but the washer doesn't. Tried switching the plugs to see if it's the outlet that doesn't work, same thing. Yes dryer, no washer.

Of course we will call a technician for the washer (we figure that even with repairs these machines are a bargain compared to new ones) but I wanted to see if there was anything we were overlooking first. Ideas?

Do you have the door closed? Unless the door is closed, no LED lights will illuminate and the washer will appear dead.

If the door is closed, do you get any of the amber LED lights illuminating? If you do, then you have power.

To start a wash program, it's necessary have the door closed, the power button depressed, and the program selector dial in the "Start/Finish" position (the 12 o'clock position at the top of the dial) before turning the dial to the wash program and temperature position that you've chosen. Without rotating the program selector dial to the "Start/Finish" position before beginning a new wash load, nothing will happen.

If, after performing all of the above steps, the washer still doesn't work, then you'll need Miele Service to determine what's wrong.

Yup, what James said! With the additional point that when it's correctly set up to choose a program it will flash at you in the 12 o'clock postion.

I was also wondering if the child lock-out system had somehow been engaged. I've never fiddled around with it but perhaps it "kills" the machine, though I'll be switched if I know how you'd disenegage it to put things right.

The other thing that occured to me was whether the cord from the machine was correctly attached. Do I recall that this machine was sold sans power cord and had to have one made and installed? (I could be thinking of another used 1918 purchaser, though.....) But if you did have a cord installed that would be where I'd double check as well.

PS: Don't forget to examine all 4 incoming water filters - there's one on each end of each water line. This wouldn't affect a "dead" machine but if they have become clogged that will interfere with cycle progress once you get the thing going.

I'm sorry you were not able to get the thing going promptly but I'm sure it can be worked out. Do you have a voltmeter electrical circuit testing thingy? That's the first thing my DH would get out to suss out where the power wasn't. I can ask him in the morning where he would be testing for this.

Hope to hear it's getting sorted out. I'll keep an eye open for additional posts.

CP, You may have had the same complaint with the Miele you passed up, too, if you're using Ecover or the Seventh Generation stuff. Try using Electrasol, Cascade or Finish or something else enzymatic. Do a search here for Ecover - there have been hordes of posters who've not had good results with Ecover in their Bosch AND Miele DWs and had to revert to the more pedestrian, non-green brands. There have been some who've been satisfied, but a statistically significant -and LARGE- (with caveats) number of Bosch/Miele owners who've not done well with it over the years. Try a different DW brand. I use a half Miele tab in mine and everything - everything comes out spanking clean! every time. And I only do a load every 3 - 5 days, with no rinsing so my load is definitely crusty. I think of it as my incredible cleaning machine because all my stuff is so sparklingly shiny when its done. I'd used Electrosol with similar results as well as some generic thing (forget name) which also worked brilliantly. Do check that it has no chlorine-bleach and that it contains enzymes, though.

Well, I'd take the 1918 in a heartbeat over anything else. I have been using 1918s for more than a decade and never a had problem with them. But it depends on what you want in washer. With a 1918 you're getting a washer with serious capacity for heating the water and many choices, but fewer factory-preset cycles. If all you ever do is use cold or cool, always use the same cycle settings, well, you don't need a 1918 for that. It's also a long-cycle default machine so if you want full cycles you'll have to factor that into your routine. Are you sure the vendor actually has 1918s and that the info is not just a left-over listing? Another thing is that you may not get the double-warranty-if-installed-by-a-Miele-tech if you order over the internet. I didn't use a Miele tech and have long-sinced past the warranty period with no need to call for any service so it wouldn't have mattered, anyway. Molly~

Love, love, love, the 1918 machines. No experince with the dryer, though I have an Asko condenser dryer. Perhaps you could sell it if you find a regularly vented dryer that can pair with the 1918. Condenser dryers are not quite as efficient as regualr dryers, but you could use it until you find something to swap it out with. If you do buy the washer, I'll be glad to help with any questions. You can download the owners' manual on the Canadian Miele site - the US one didn't have last time I looked, which was a few years ago. The 1918 is a long-cyle default machine (though it has a rapid wash feature). I do queen sized bedding in them with no problem. I am sure you could do king-sized sheets, duvet covers, and perhaps, mattress pads depending on the filling. I doubt you wash KS down comforters (or any KS comforter). I can do QS medium-weight down comforters, and of course. full-sized ones of all weights. I'm not sure what sized machine you are used to, but as a test you could weigh a basket (adjusting for tare) of a typical normal load. If it weighs 11 lbs or less, it would fit nicely in the 1918. Most people who take the trouble to do this are actually surprised. If you wash a great deal of synthetic fabrics (esp. permanet press items like pants and dress shirts) you will have to dial the laod size down somewhat as those sorts of loads need to be smaller to avoid wrinkling. But for general wash (sheets, towels, all cotton shirts, play clothes, household and kitchen laundry, jeans, kids clothes, etc.) the 11 lb size is right on the money. This is dry weight, of course. I have used Miele technical service(the 1-800 number) one time and that was this summer. I called and asked them to re-install my washer on the stand because I have never been satisfied with the job the installer did 5 years ago. Paid $175. Two techs came from out of state. To make the story short, while they were here the tech offered to check out my other Miele appliances...a DW and dryer. He said that Miele is not trying to make a profit from service calls because their primary goal is selling good equipment. They consider service as a secondary support function so he said he might as well check everything out while he was here. He connected a laptop(optical interface) to the washer and checked the components out. This of course does not check physical things like belts etc. Next he did the same thing to the dryer. On to the kitchen. I started the DW and he connected the interface to it and watched as it began to move through the cycle. The computer screen was displaying the status of each component, water flow valves, target temperatures and actual temperatures and other components as the machine was running. He next moved it through different functions with the laptop. The laptop also contained the parts inventories for all appliances, and technical white papers so everything was there for the techs. Good news is that everything checked out OK. So for my one time of $175, 2 techs from out of state, and everything checked out OK. I don't think I will hesitate to call them again if I think I need to.
