miele w1918 is dead

I have a Miele w1918 that appears dead. I closed the door firmly and the display went blank. The door is latched and I cant get at my laundry. I reset the breaker for the machine. I also unplugged the machine hoping that it might reset. The machine dial is set at "finish" and still no display. My guess it that the switch in the door is defective since is what activates the display. Any ideas?

You can try unscrewing and screwing back in the light bulb. (You'll need to use the manual door opener to get to the light).
My Miele (different model) behaves in the way you describe if the light bulb ever works itself loose.

You can open the washer door manually by prying open the rectangular door at the bottom left front of the machine and pulling down on the small ring dangling from a piece of webbing behind the door. The little orange plastic tool for prying open the rectangular door can be found clipped to the back of the detergent dispenser drawer front. That, at least, will allow you to remove the laundry.

Probably a silly question, but are you sure the power button is depressed?

BTW, the model W1918 doesn't have an interior light, so no need to go looking for a loose bulb.

You should be able to find and download a user manual for the units. If not, contact Miele and they will help. I have Askos not Mieles but thought the setup was the same. Washer plugs into dryer, dryer plugs into wall. You should already have a 220 hookup for a dryer. Mine fill with cold only. There is only a cold line run to the machine and no option to run a hot water line to it. I'm not sure what has your plumber confused.

Well, Miele hose would be better than a garden variety one because I think it is better quality than plain jane black rubber. But the plain version will still deliver the water to your machine. I think you can also buy better quality washer inlet hoses at some stores. If you love your Miele 1918 as much as I love mine, you might want to treat it to the generic (non-Miele) version of the better quality hose. This is particularly true if you aren't in the habit of actually turning the water off at the tap between washing sessions. I do turn my tap off, but if I routinely left it on I would spring for the better hose as insurance against it bursting. I don't know if the threads of the hose end are some European version of standard hose thread. I know I have both of my hoses (both hot and cold lines) connected to a garden variety Y, that in turn is connected to my cold tap. It's been that way for well more than a decade and I haven't noticed any subtle leakage, so I rather think the hose threads match whatever is commonly found in the US. But yes, you do have to make sure you harvest then re-use (or buy new ones) the filters on both ends of both of the hoses. Sometimes the in-board one (meaning one closest to the machine) gets kind of stuck in the hose; sometimes it's stuck in the inlet itself. Just unscrew the (original) hose carefully and take the time to find - and extract - both sets of filter cones. You defintely do not want tiny bits iof pipe rust to get into the machine because it will irretrievably block some of the tiny little emitters that deliver water above the detergent drawer. Those emitters have specific moments when they deliver water during the various fill, pre-wash, and rinse cycles. Having them blocked is ore than just not gettng enough water. It's more about ot getting enough water at the right point in the cycle. Good luck. L.

Not a Miele. Last month our dryer needed repair and the stacked set was shoved into the laundry closet within an inch of its life, lol. Took us the better part of an hour to move it out so we in order not to get charged for it by repair bozo's, er, I mean techs( they charged by the minute). It was then we decided that it was time to pull the plug instead of waiting until next year, hence the research, well the excuse to do even more research. We now have a new set, with breathing room around them. I'll do a reveal soon. Miele manual can be found under "Customer Service" then "Brochures & Manuals". There's a subheading tab for the. This Is a really fun part of the website :-) kind of a history of Miele in the US.

Thanks, Larsi. The angle of the photo may be making the levels look deeper, I don't know. But there were 5 rinses, if I count the rinse that happened during the main wash, to cool things down. Maybe the cool down rinse always happens. Do you know? Because I bet the cycles are similar to your old 1986. The differences that I am aware between the 1918 and the 1986 are that the 1918 doesn't have the "Soak" option, and that it is a bit smaller (front to back) than the 1986.

Did you swap the plug with the dryer?

Ours just went blank/dead the other night. DH took it apart, followed wires, had me reading the diagram, and obviously found a loose connector because it started working!!! (yahoooo).

He's a mechanic/fix-it/tractor wiring/pump repair guy, so he isn't afraid to dig into it.

We have a Miele service tech in the area now - it's $175 for them to come out and diagnose the issue.

I have used Miele technical service(the 1-800 number) one time and that was this summer. I called and asked them to re-install my washer on the stand because I have never been satisfied with the job the installer did 5 years ago. Paid $175. Two techs came from out of state. To make the story short, while they were here the tech offered to check out my other Miele appliances...a DW and dryer. He said that Miele is not trying to make a profit from service calls because their primary goal is selling good equipment. They consider service as a secondary support function so he said he might as well check everything out while he was here.

He connected a laptop(optical interface) to the washer and checked the components out. This of course does not check physical things like belts etc. Next he did the same thing to the dryer. On to the kitchen. I started the DW and he connected the interface to it and watched as it began to move through the cycle. The computer screen was displaying the status of each component, water flow valves, target temperatures and actual temperatures and other components as the machine was running. He next moved it through different functions with the laptop. The laptop also contained the parts inventories for all appliances, and technical white papers so everything was there for the techs. Good news is that everything checked out OK.

So for my one time of $175, 2 techs from out of state, and everything checked out OK. I don't think I will hesitate to call them again if I think I need to.
