I make a durned good salsa out of canned tomatoes...
Buy canned tomatoes, the cheaper the better, not those packed in puree, just supermarket brand canned whole tomatoes.
Drain, cut out any hard green spots or cores, and chop, then add the chopped green onion the chopped garlic, cilantro, green chiles, jalapenos, lime juice, wine vinegar, salt ground red dried chiles...whatever.
It's not quite salsa cruda...but it's not cooked salsa either.

Susie you are in the Philly area correct? Are you with in a reasonable distance to Buck's Cty? Tanners Farmer's Market alwyas has great tomatoes. It's down the street from my mom and I go there whenever I'm back for a visit! I can give you directions if you need them. Also, lately I have taken up a new hobby, making salsa! I use plum tomatoes and remove the seeds and membranes. I also add a good organic fire-roasted can tomato to give it more substance! Hope this helps. Gina

I grew up in Bucks County...lower bucks-Bensalem to be exact.
I will be at Moms on Friday afternoon but she usually shy's away from traveling too far. Maybe after I drop her off but usually farmers markets are done by late afternoon.

It may have to be a canned tomato salsa this time only I will promise a REAL batch once the good tomatoes start rolling in.

If I were to use a canned tomato to make salsa (and I have done it in the winter), I use Original Rotel Diced tomatoes with Green Chilies. Nice kick to them along with a little olive oil, cilantro, garlic, etc.

I do a darned good salsa from canned diced tomatoes. Whatever brand is on sale - and not in puree - gets to go home with me. They work just fine - I add my own stuff from there. One time I tried a brand of canned diced tomatoes and green chilies, but it was discontinued and none of the other brands tasted quite right.

I love Rotel tomatoes and chilis but believe them when they say they're HOT. Aside from those I think Muir Glen is a pretty good brand.

I was also going to suggest Muir Glen, especially the fire-roasted ones. They add a really nice flavor to off-season salsa! --Gina

I like Red Gold and Rotel but I think any brand would be fine. In fact, I think the canned tomatoes nowadays often taste better than fresh ones.

Here's a link for my favorite salsa. I use RED onion and add an extra can of tomatoes. I also use a bottled dressing called Hendrickson's. It's awesome! You don't even need chips; some people I know just eat it with a fork.

I am probably too late for this post, but I will throw my salsa in the mix:

2 mangos, diced
2 oranges, diced
1 green apple, diced
1 pint raspberries (or frozen)
2 nectarines, diced
2 jalapenos, or to taste (I use gloves to remove the seeds and membrane, which is where the "heat" is)
1/2 red onion, diced (you can use any onion really)
cilantro, to taste
pinch of salt
2 pinches sugar
sometimes I add diced avocado and/or tomatoes to it

You can put any fruits in it you like. People tear this salsa up, whenever I make it.
