Oxygen Bleaches

I tried to run a search but I wasn't able to find anything on this...

Is there a big difference between the different brands of oxygen cleaners? I see Oxyclean on the shelves with Sun Oxygen Cleaner right next to it at less than half the price. Is there much difference in the cleaning ability of different brands? I don't want to buy the cheaper brand if it isn't going to work as well but if it does the job, I am all for saving some money!

Some of the other brands are a lot filler and less cleaner.
The best one is Ecover-it is 100% without the filler.

I use the Sun brand. I have never personally used the Oxy Clean brand, but I'm definitly satisfied w/ Sun. My fiance builds bridges so his clothes are filthy and I use @ least 1 scoop in each load of his clothes, so I would probably go bankrupt using Oxy Clean... LOL. If you're skeptical I would just buy one tub of each. Then you can compare & hopefully you'll see that there isn't any difference (except for price) and be able to buy Sun from now on.

Enzymes are not stable in laundry liquid products that contain bleach (oxgyen or chlorine), powdered laundry products are fine as chemical & detergent makers have found ways to keep one from affecting the other the shelf. Long as the product is kept in a cool and dry storage location things should be fine. Liquid laundry products by and large do contain enzymes but not bleach for this reason. The only exception are the various "pod" type products where ways have been found to seal off the bleach from enzymes to keep each from affecting the other. As for oxygen bleach and water temperature in general yes the hotter the water equals better results. However that mainly pertains to sodium perborate and liquid hydrogen peroxide. Sodium percarbonate OTOH is known as the "cold water" oxygen bleach because it can and will start working in cooler water. Personally have used either sodium percarbonate containing detergents or added it as a powder (Ecover) to laundry washed at temps of either 85F or 100F and the results are same; stains are soils are removed with textiles whitened and brightened. Ecover makes two versions of oxygen bleach by the way. One comes in plastic jugs and is liquid oxygen bleach (hydrogen peroxide) the other is a power (sodium percarbonate). Compared to "OxiClean" type products the latter is a better buy because it contains pure oxygen bleach. The others are usually 10% or more of washing soda.

Pete, I agree with Sparky, you were doing more rinses, now your doing one...its probably caused from detergent build up. I have issues with some additives that contain sodium carbonate, since its in power detergent and most additives its overkill. ..sodium carbonate is very hard to rinse out.and sometimes requires a vinegar rinse to help strip it out of fabric. you could try vinegar..many people use it in the rinse, however if you are using it to strip detergent out you should use a 2nd rinse. With your water restrictions I don't know if that's something you want to do. Sparkys idea of rinsing in the tub is a good one..I'd do the 1st rinse in the tub with vinegar and a final rinse in the washer.. Miele's ultra white powder is on my list of must buy..I hear wonderful reviews about it..even some die hard persil users that have tried it have said they won't go back to persil for whites, besides it is loaded with sodium percarbonate and I'm a sucker for that. Recordaras also had a good suggestion liquid detergent often leaves fabrics softer, but careful dosing is a must since it is notorious for over sudsing. Whatever you decide let us know the results. You could bring your laundry here..no water restrictions, its rsined ALMOST daily all summer...lol

Hi Pat, The simple is yes. Tide with Bleach powder contains more oxygen bleach than regular Tide powders.

I have used Oxyclean, Shout Oxypowder and Ultra Sun. Shout Oxypowder was the best, but it has been since discontinued. Now I buy the Sun powder and find it works just as well as Oxyclean. In my opinion, just save your money and go for it.

I used to use Oxiclean, but I now I use Sun Oxygen Cleaner and it does as good a job as Oxiclean for less money.

I bought the Sun Oxygen Cleaner and have used it for one load... the grass stains are gone off the knees so it is working to my expectations!! $1.81 is a lot easier to pay than $6 if it is going to work as well!!

Biokleen's Oxygen Bleach Plus claims it is 3x more concentrated -- but fails to say more concentrated than what.

Does anyone have the data on this? How does it compare to Ecover oxy?

iasheff: thanks for your link. Very interesting article and nice that they actually listed and linked all those products. I've been using BiOKleen as my dishwasher detergent for years now and it's very effective, doesn't take much and doesn't smell up the kitchen.

Have only used borax as a bleach. With asthma I get attacks triggered by a lot of traditional commercial products. But now I see a toilet bowl cleaner listed that's based on oxygen bleach. That I'll definitely try.

I wish products listed the percentages on the labels... or there was an easy way of determining the concentrations....
