Talking about wine....favorite Pinot Grigio?

We usually drink red wine, but had Estancia Pinot Grigio last weekend. Found the taste was good for a nice cool summer wine.

Of course went to the store and there was only one bottle left. The price is a little more than we like to pay for an everyday wine, price is ok for special occasions.

So tell me what are some of your favorite Pinot Grigio wines?

That's easy. Santa Margherita. I remember when I used to be able to get a bottle for $13. Now it's $35. Good stuff. It looks like spun gold and tastes like summer. It's an Italian pinot.

Both have been named already :-) We love Estancia and Santa Margherita both..... But in this heat I have been leaning towards a Sauvignon Blanc - Casa Lapostolle and the best part is it is inexpensive enough to quaff.

I make glass torchwork beads, and the odd thing is, the red glass ISN'T more expensive than other colors. There is a "gold pink" made with gold, and it's very expensive. So there are ways to make red glass cheaply. I don't know why they don't use that for bottles, maybe it's toxic. Watch out for coated glass; lots of decorative objects are clear glass with a red (or other color) paint that fades, scratches, and peels. I can tell the coated stuff by holding it up to the light, the color is richer and more consistent.

Now that I've moved to the southwest where the summers are HOT HOT HOT and the winters are mild, my consumption of red wine has drastically declined. I LOVE red wine... but I pretty much only have it in the winter when I'm braising or roasting meats. Spring, summer and fall are all about salads & grilling outside and drinking whites or rosés. I'm pretty much a rosé junkie now. Luckily the local liquor store has a huge selection. I'm partial to old world rosés because they have significant minerality and are very dry on the palate. Dark rosés are great even with grilled meats and lighter rosés are wonderful with poultry & seafood. One of my favorite combinations is a french muscadet with oysters. (That is one taste preference that hasn't changed: I still love cold water oysters more than warm water oysters). French rosés are inexpensive, usually anywhere from $8 - $15 a bottle and are fantastic.

Sure, and they all have memories and stories. Many years ago, I worked on one of Christopher Alexander's houses in the Berkeley hills. He used a lot of graduate student grunt labor. His team would take months to make even the most trivial decisions, with endless discussions. IIRC that house took five years to finish, and the couple who commissioned it got divorced before it was done. I once lived down the street from a pair of Thomas Gordon Smith post-modern numbers (the Tuscan and Laurentian), kind of a snarky send up of the typical suburban snout house. They were painted in a sort of Pompeii meets Miami Vice color scheme, with a neoclassical column in the middle of their wide garage doors, to break up the span. Sadly, one house was eventually repainted in boring colors, and some quirky exterior details removed. I never saw the insides, which were painted in huge classical style murals. When I first got married we went to England and saw the Colefax and Fowler building, the one with the Wyatt/Wyattville yellow drawing room. It's up on the second floor, via a dark, narrow, twisty flight of stairs papered with what look to be bad baroque paintings, but may be theatrical backdrops. The room itself isn't as wide or tall as it looks in pictures, and the arc of the ceiling is quite shallow. When I saw it, all the Nancy Lancaster furniture was gone, it was full of lamps. The paint work was a little obscured by nicotine and wood smoke, but you could still see the complicated oil glazing-- there are tiny pin point flecks of many colors in the glaze, which give an almost pearly effect. I think Fowler deliberately allowed the painters to use dirty brushes!

Re wine temp, "room temperature" does not refer to American houses. It's about old European stone houses, and in the mid-60s F. Storage temperature should be literally cave temperature, which is the mid-50s. Most of the year my kitchen is 75-80°F. For reds, cool, not cold or warm brings the best flavor balance and appreciability. Warmed wine isn't usually good, unless it's rich, not so complex and full of mulling spices. I.e., you're not really tasting the wine. The reason for putting opened wine in the fridge is to keep it from deteriorating as fast. Pour a glass and let it come to temperature before drinking it. Whites are different. Most are better cold, but Northern river cold, not icebox cold. This brings out the crispness. Too cold and it doesn't taste like much. This is orthodoxy, of course, but I've experienced it myself, and really, since that's the temperature the vintners are assuming it's going to be served at, it would make sense that the wines are optimized for that temperature. I will put a red in the fridge to cool down if it's been in the kitchen, and forget it, so have experienced it too cold. I have left it on a sunny counter, and experienced it warm. Best is cool. At the time approved temperature. This is not scientific, of course, but I figured there are plenty enough out of the boxers to challenge the orthodoxy, and I haven't heard anyone seriously wanting to upset this apple cart. From Wikipedia: TRPM5 is a calcium-activated non-selective cation channel that induces depolarization upon increases in intracellular calcium, it is a signal mediator in chemosensory cells. Channel activity is initiated by a rise in the intracellular calcium, and the channel permeates monovalent cations as K+ and Na+. TRPM5 is a key component of taste transduction in the gustatory system of bitter, sweet and umami tastes being activated by high levels of intracellular calcium. It has also been targeted as a possible contributor to fat tastesignaling.[7][8] The calcium dependent opening of TRPM5 produces a depolarizing generator potential which leads to an action potential. I only understand part of that, but I notice that it doesn't affect all taste sensors. That may explain why some foods taste better hot or cold but I don't see how it implies warm is better for wine. Santa Margherita for me too. But $35?! Here a normal price is around $26, my closest liquor store regularly sells it for $22, the discount place $19 (unfortunately I missed their 4th of July sale, $16.51; I meant to buy a case.)

I'd love to find an acceptable cheap one. Black box is ok for the price, around $20 for an equivalent of 3 bottles.

Must just be a really hot ticket item in this area, since podunk Nashville has a really low cost of living??? I guess. Or maybe I talk to a lot of people and spread the word!

I haven't seen Estancia around here, but I'll look a little harder. I like Santa Margherita, too, but it is cost prohibitive on my budget for the most part.

Barefoot makes a decent one for a very good price. Around here I think it is I am mostly a red wine drinker, but I do like a buttery Chardonnay or a crisp Pinot Grigio every so often.

I am fond of New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs. I have had inexpensive Pinot Grigio that I like but brand names escape me right now. I've track them down. I agree that Barefoot (acquired by Gallo, FYI) is a decent wine at an everyday price.

I pay around 20$ in Florida for the Santa Margherita, same price in Montreal
( the gov. surtaxes all alcohol so I'm surprised it's not $30 here) ; you could probably get some online for cheaper than in your area.

Our liquor board is run by the government and I order online, they ship 18 bottles for $6. it's well worth it. Shipping would be $12 but they pay half.

Some cheaper pinot grigios can be pretty tasteless, imo...

WHew, what prices! I won't pay more than $10 a bottle except for something special. Between Costco and BevMo (and their 5 cent sales), I don't buy naywhere else.

Wine is a fluid thing, pun intended. Buy a bottle, try it that night, and if you like it, go back the next day and buy more. If you don't like it, try something else.

Wines are like life, there's always something new around the corner.

I just went on the NH State Liquor Store website and here are their prices:

Estancia Pinot Grigio $10.99
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio $19.99

When they run specials they are usually about 20% less.

Actually, I like Bella Sera Pino Grigio, and it's really cheap. When I'm feeling rich, I might try the brands listed above.

I don't think we have a state liquor board here in MN. Sounds like an interesting concept!

I hate buying online, but I mught at least peek at online wine prices. Didn't know you could buy liquor online. How do they verify that you are "legal"?

My favorite pinot is Voga. It is in a very cool cyndrical bottle. It sells for about $10.00 per bottle and wherever we go, people always stop me to talk about the bottle. I believe the website is voga.com

I also like barefoot and Kris. Santa Margarita sells at Costco for 19.99 a bottle.
