We have had ours for about 5 1/2 years. My hubby always liked a firm mattress and I have always liked a soft one. So now we can both have what we want. We both really like ours and it didn't take any time for us to switch from a water bed to a sleep number bed. You will notice that you have to change the numbers when it gets warmer outside or colder.

Several years ago we bought the mid priced sleep comfort bed.
My back was in pain too and I couldn't take much more of it. I was hoping for a miracle and that in one week my back would be better. Well it took a couple months for my back to feel better but it hasn't hurt since and I recommend it to everyone.
I turn it up to 100, lay on it the way I like to sleep, and let it pump down to a number that fits me best. I believe it's currently 55. My dh is about a 35.
I also put it on my old king bed frame and it feels really solid.
Good wishes for a comfortable nights sleep. It can take a while to get used to it and for a back to feel better on it from my experience. The best thing about it is that it NEVER sags (it shouldn't sag) like some of our other beds would eventually.

We've had all three types of waterbed mattresses and purchased a Select Comfort about three years ago. DH has had back problems for more years than I've known him. He was very skeptable when I dragged him to the mall to get more info. We purchased it and he loves it. I on the other hand don't feel rested when I get up in the AM, although I sleep like a baby (I very rarely awaken during the night). I've switched settings from the softest to very firm.

I bought mine in September, 1995. Best money I ever spent.

I have severe spinal problems, plus arthritis and sciatica. Of course it is worse now than it was 13 years ago, but regardless of how tired, achy and painful I get during the day, I go to bed and sleep soundly; wouldn't even know I have those problems.

Do you still get the 30 night trial? It will take some getting used to. My number is 35, but it doesn't feel "soft."

Another very satisfied owner here. We switched from a waterbed to a Select Comfort in 1995. Our control went bad about 6 years ago. I called the company and they sent out a new upgraded one stat. No charge. Neither of us have any back or pain issues. Our interest was in the two mattress that could be set individually. Mine is set at 30, Dh at 65.

Could anyone help with determining a good price for a king size bed? Did anyone buy on the internet?

Wow, am I glad to see this post. I have back/sleep problems so DH and I bought a sleep number bed in early December. We got the bottom of the line, which is supposed to be just as good as the others but the controls don't actually have numbers on them, just a toggle switch, so you just adjust it to the way you feel. Ron is fine with his side, but I can't get it to where my shoulders are comfortable. Every morning I wake up with stiff, painful shoulders, especially my right one. I was thinking maybe it's because I have a very large butt and maybe that has something to do with it? I haven't had a comfortable bed in so long I could scream! I tried putting a thin, foam mattress pad just under my hips last night but I don't think it worked that great. I had it folded over and put it under the air mattress part. Anyone have this trouble with theirs? Maybe it just needs to be softer? It's hard without the numbers. I'm beginning to regret not being able to see how soft/firm I have the thing but it was only $600 this way!

Well...I slept like a baby! First night we both have slept through the night in...well, months for me and years for DH! I was so cozy on my side! I have been sleeping on the couch for the last month because my hips would ache on the old mattress, but still had to flip from one end of the couch to the other because of the aches and my arm going numb and tingling....not last night. I woke up once and realized I was in the same position I fell asleep in and went right back to sleep. DH is always up and down all night long..tossing and turning. He slept all night....what a huge difference. I was prrety skeptical at first and debated getting one. I finally just did it! I am so happy with it so far. Makes me want to go back to bed! If this continues it's well worth the money. We had a waterbed for 25 years or more...then went to a memory foam (cheaper version of the good one) and then a regular mattress. Although I loved my waterbed it was bothering DH's back the older he got and we had to move on :O( Keeping my fingers crossed that this is the one!

Wow, Gwanny, I can't help but think that I'm doing something wrong! I called the sleep number people and they had some suggestions I'm going to try. There's nothing like a good sleep, eh? Glad you had a good night!

Our controls don't have numbers, but the only purpose for the number is a "visual" clue for how soft/firm your side is. I'd say follow your instincts and go by what FEELS right to you. Also, they say to sleep on the same number several nights before you adjust it. Do you sleep on your back or side? I wonder if your shoulder pain has more to do with your position. ?? Or your pillow?

One other thing. I used to think I liked a softer bed than DH but I find that I like firmer better these days. Keep experimenting!

How much do these beds run? For a queen?

My old GF had one and I thought it should be great but wasn't all that impressed. She had a bad back long before I did and it helped, but she doesn't use it anymore. Has an adjustable one now. She worked for them for a while so she bought it with her discount. She said to do over, she would have bought it at the discount, but she wouldn't buy it at retail.

IIRC hers was one that got hit with the mold like so many of them did or do. Seems like especially in warm, humid climates it's worse but it's something to watch for. It's really gross when it happens.

Another friend had several major back and knee surgeries and tried every bed around, including Select Comfort and it didn't do anything for her. They wound up getting a Temperpedic (sp?) type - the foam one and that has been the only thing that gave her relief. She was one hurting unit for a long time.

So I guess it's a try it and see if it works for you.

I sleep on my side, OKWrite. The Select Comfort people told me to fill it all the way up, then slowly let the air out until the mattress starts to come away from my waist. Then fill it up until it's comfortable. It should fill in the gap at your waist. I think I had it too firm. I tell you, buying a mattress is no easy thing! Same with the pillows! I bought a new one today. I have been changing the mattress and then waiting a week or so to change it again. When we first got it we had a 3" memory foam topper on it. Now we are just trying it without the foam topper.

We have the one with one control and you can see the numbers...it was $1000.00 with shipping and tax. I hated, hated to pay that much for a mattress, but am so gald I did. I didn't expect much from the first night but it was wonderful! I think the sticker shock will fade over time :O). Actually for a good mattress anyway it was going to cost close to that. DH didn't want to go budget mattresses again! He won and I'm happy with it so far.
