My Hubby was diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnea almost 20 years ago, when info about this first started making the news. I could diagnos him without any tests done as he was so classic in his symptoms. He used the Cpap machine faithfully for about 2 years and was a totally different person. The kids used to call their dad, "the new human daddy". Then for years he was not that great with his compliance in using it. 8 years ago, he went to a new doc for sleep disorders (we had moved and not near the old doc who is a leading authority on sleep disorders) and had a new sleep study done. Long story short, the results where the same as yours, very low score, or whatever they call it and was told he did not have sleep apnea at all. I burst out laughing, right in this docs face. Told him he was nuts and he didn't live with the man or try to sleep in the same bed with him either. I woken up 6-10 times every night with him not breathing and then gasping for air, if he doesn't use the Cpap, and told him to take his sleep study and "put it where the sun don't shine." After that the sleep study was repeated and low and behold, the doc admitted he was wrong, something about faulty equipment and some other stuff that skewed the results. It may be that you won't be covered by your insurance because the levels are so low. If that is the case I would demand that they redo the sleep study to see if the results are any different. My son also has sleep apnea and he's 27. Physically neither my husband or my son fit the typical weight stuff for sleep apnea. My son also had a deviated septum as well, from an old sports injury when he was in high school. He was told he should get that repaired but it had nothing to do with the sleep apnea. He didn't believe the docs but did have the nose repaired, no deviated septum, breathes better and it's easier to use the cpap machine, because you do have to breathe the air pressure in through your nose, but it didn't cure the sleep apnea. Yes the plegm is normal with sleep apnea, at least it is with both my son and hubby and the docs have said it is. I would get the septum repaired as it will be easier to breath using the cpap, but it will not cure the sleep apnea. Good luck

I beat you all - I've had five. (DH has had one.) Facilities vary DRASTICALLY so you may wish to visit the facility you will be going to before your study; SleepHealth Centers (a privately owned chain that many hospitals contract their sleep studies out to) had BY FAR the best facilities IME: incredibly comfy beds, TVs, reading materials, sound/lightproof rooms (or nightlights if you wanted them), an evening snack and light breakfast (muffins, etc.), and adjustable times if you are like me and don't fall asleep until 4am instead of the convenient-for-THEM 9-10pm. The sleep studies I had in two hospitals (Portsmouth Regional in NH and Brigham & Womens in Boston) sucked - hard beds, noise, no TVs, nothing to read, shared bathrooms. B&W was especially awful because they forced me to sleep flat on my back, on a flat bed, with a flat pillow. (I NEVER sleep on my back - four sleep studies proved it - and was in agony when I got up in the morning.) They wouldn't let me take my pain or sleep meds because supposedly it would "mess up the results". Halfway through the night the tech came in insisting I had "terrible" sleep apnea and started sticking CPAP masks on my face and expecting me to get right back to sleep while I felt like I was suffocating from this forced air and on the verge of panic attacks. It was pretty bad. I sent their results, along with the other four studies, to another sleep specialist and he was like "WTF? You don't have sleep apnea. You do have a crapload of other sleep dysfunctions, but you most definitely NOT have sleep apnea under your typical sleep conditions.") I advise buying a tube of Prell shampoo to get the goop out of your hair, especially if you have longer hair, although if your hair is colored Prell will strip/dull the color. Personally, I just found it preferable to slap on a hat and go home to my own bathroom, since it can take a few washings (and some digging with your nails) to get it all off - I think they use one kind of goo in some areas and another kind of goo in others, because in some spots it came right off and others it was waxy and hard to remove. I think the most embarrassing part was that you have to call the tech every time you had to go to the bathroom because you had to be detached from some of your rigging and if you forgot and got up yourself all kinds of alarms went off. I go about every hour at night (interstitial cystitis) and it was a pain to get the tech, and I could just hear them thinking "again?!. LOL

My husband has sleep apnea. For waaay too many years, I was constantly saying to him during the night, "you're not breathing..." I finally made an appointment with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist because I wanted him to go through a sleep study. I made an appointment for myself at the same time, because I knew I had a sinus infection. Color me surprised when the doctor said that *I* was going to have to have a sleep study done, too! See, when you go in to the ENT, you have to fill out a questionnaire and by my answers, the doctor knew that I wasn't getting a good night's sleep... Anyway, we had the sleep studies done on the same night (no, they don't let you be in the same room). The results showed that Hubs most definitely has sleep apena, and that although I don't have true apnea, I have an upper airway obstruction and I don't go into REM sleep. (Doc said to me, "you are seriously sleep deprived!") We were both given CPAPs and they have made a world of difference.

I have been sleeping good, the problem when I get up around 5is for a bathroom break, then I toss and turn toss and turn and after a big finally go back to sleep.; Bought a new pillow and it is great, but it's waking up at the week hours and going back to sleep. I DON'T go to bed early, like 10:30 ish. RUTHIE, you got one to share :o)
