Thumbs down for me on Kathie Lee!

Thumbs up on Hoda.

I think Hoda is adorable, has personality PLUS, and I get the feeling they are not really compatible.

Am I alone in my thinking?

What are your favorite American persimmon cultivars? (taste-wise)
Q

I tried Prok this season from a friends orchard and I wasn't impressed by the flavor as it lacked over all character and sweetness. However the texture was nice compared to some of the other american persimmons i've tried, as well as the size. It was definitely more firm than others. I have heard from some sources that Prok has some asian in it, but I don't know if this is true. Here is a picture of one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25212487@N04/6224647515/in/photostream I also tried a claypool selection from another friends farm and again, compared to some of the other persimmons I've tried(which I'll explain next), it lacked over all flavor complexity. However it was sweeter than Prok. Here is a picture of that...unfortunately I don't remember the cultivar name, probably because it consisted of a few numbers and was easy to forget. Anyways, it was a claypool selection: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25212487@N04/6271281968/in/photostream My best american persimmon experiences were all at Oikos Tree Crops in southwest, MI where I spent several months examining the american persimmons trees planted there. All of which are seedlings from good selections, i.e. yates, morris burton, etc. Ken Asmus has wonderful seedling planting with over 500 mature trees. There is incredible variation in fruit size, color, texture, flavor, and ripening time. Some don't even ripen in some years. We are working on developing a selection of cultivars from this planting that will be grafted and hopefully available in the nursery trade. These will be some of the northernmost american perisimmon selections, which is great for folks like me in MI where ripening can be a problem. One tree in particular was a seedling of Morris Burton and had AMAZINGLY delicious fruit with very high sugar content and a delectable flavor with butter scotchy notes..by far the sweetest I have ever tried. The flesh on this variety was a rich reddish color...very beautiful. Here is short video of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iofe3u5pruY&list=UUsSu_6ip07ywsY37D35Cm8w&index=10&feature=plcp Out of the seedling population we also found a tree that produces blue skinned fruit. And not just a touch of blue but very blue! Here is a nice picture of it: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4083/5167939059_56e3a070e3_z.jpg If you're in Michigan or a similar climate where ripening can be an issue I would consider planting some seedlings from Oikos Tree Crops if you have the space. Sorry I don't have more info about specific cultivars, will have more to come. Cheers!

Oh thank you all so much for your responses!! It's so helpful... sara the brit: do you have photos of your Ikea corner cab? akchicago- I did consider a corner sink, but I REALLY want to be able to look out to my garden from the sink :) live_wire_oak- I do need to talk with the KD at my cabinet supplier, I know. She is great. But since we're waiting for bids back from the carpenters and haven't as yet totally finalized the space available, I don't want to waste her time yet. (She had completely hammered out our old layout back in January, and then...with advice from this forum... we decided to move the kitchen to a whole different room! So all her work on previous layout was for nought, and I don't want to make her start again till we're sure about the new layout.) It's a difference of 6" on one leg and 18" on the other, which make a lot of difference in our tight layout! I am HOPING to have the numbers this week (it has been 2 weeks already and not knowing what plan we can afford is just killing me!) and then I'll meet with the KD again. Again, thanks to ALL of you who responded, it is unbelievably helpful to get this input. These things are really major splurges for us and I really don't want to spend extra $$ if I don't have to! I will post the layout in a sec after I scan it. Stacey

Who's your favorite T.V. chef?

Oh, how could I forget Sara Moulton, Alton Brown and the 2 Fat Ladies! Sara comes across as sincere, down to earth and neighbor-like. I like her cooking style but not a lot of her recipes. Alton Brown and the Two Fat Ladies have very few recipes I'd want to try, but find the shows very entertaining and often informative. Dotmom, Justin Wilson was at one of the sports shows many many years back and a friend and I went to wander around and of course see his show. Well, as it turned out he had JUST left the show as we got in there and wouldn't be back for about quite a few hours. I thought he'd at least be out signing autographs or something but that wasn't the case. We wandered around and waited. Debated about how long to stay but finally gave up. That close. About the only person I've really wanted to see in person. Thought it would be interesting to talk to him a few minutes if it was allowed. Sadly he's gone, but a few of his shows are on YouTube. The ones I saw on there I remember watching. Justin's measuring salt in his hand, throw in a little extra - just shows it's not a science. I got to the point I could smell something and tell if it needed salt. Some friends laughed at me when I measured with my hand and I said If Justin can do it, so can I and they said yeah right, so I took a measuring spoon and poured it in. 1 teaspoon exactly. He also got me using fresh ground pepper on garlic bread. And it are good, I garontee! I have a couple of his cookbooks. Received them as gifts. Not that I really needed them because I copied down a lot of his recipes that interested me. I still use them as a base for others. I just modify to suit my tastes. As a cook should. And I enjoyed his speech. Sort of a Cajun Norm Crosby. And unlike so many, he poked fun at himself rather than feigning offense at every opportunity. Refreshing. And the Two Fat Ladies were fun to watch. It was so obvious they didn't get along. Not sure how they got paired up. They'd snip at each other occasionally and was entertaining. I also like the way ALton Brown interjects some humor and, like America's Test Kitchen, include some of the science and why, for example, some cookies are soft and some are crunchy. One other I forgot is Nathalie Dupree. Again, the older shows were so far superior to those of today (and Alton & 2FL are old shows IMO)

Who reads Lee Child?

Probably more than you want to know, but I get obsessed with knowing things. In reading the list I see they recommend reading book No. 8 first, as it is a prequel to the first book, Killing Floor. It looks like he has a new one coming out named "61 Hours." "If you're a diehard must-be-read-in-chronological-order person: The Enemy (the prequel); Killing Floor; Die Trying; Tripwire; Running Blind; Echo Burning; Without Fail; Persuader; One Shot; The Hard Way; Bad Luck and Trouble; Nothing to Lose; Gone Tomorrow"

Haven't watched Hoda at all, but had more than enough of Kathie Lee Gifford in years past. If she's on it, I won't watch it.

Oh dear...now you're going to have me watching the show today. I don't usually watch it. Have caught it occasionally. I do like Hoda and Kathy Lee isn't as annoying as she use to be or am I just getting more tolerant? For those that don't know, they are the last hour of the Today show. The show keeps adding new segments. Before you know it, it will be 24 -7 because NBC has nothing else to offer.....24 -7 that's not a bad idea. It would end the Leno - Conan battle!

LOL Georgysmom--good idea!

Since the changeover to digital signals, I no longer receive NBC. So no more Today Show for me. But I still enjoy looking at the Friday Ambush Makeovers on MSNBC.com. I usually think they pile on way too much makeup, and I like only about 30% of the hairdos, so I really don't know what I find appealing about the makeovers. Maybe it's the dramatic changes they produce. They are definitely dramatic!

Have you ever seen the Saturday Night Live skits about Kathy Lee and Hoda - they are a SCREAM!

I am sure they have some on YouTube....

I didn't know who Hoda was. Had to look her up..still don't know her. I had this funny thought she was some star off of Star Wars.

Kathy Lee doesn't bother me though. I don't see what makes people upset with her really. Is she to nice? Not enough sex talk. I only remember her from along time ago. I remember her having morals the other celebs didn't have. I haven't seen a national newscaster that has any yet, so what's new. Maggie Rodriguez is a witch I hear. Having seen her in the past I believe it. I'll keep my eyes open for HODA.

Cannot stand the sight of Kathie Lee. I think she is rude, obnoxious and vulgar. I don't know why they would ever hire her on the Today Show. Hoda just seems out there without a clue. Not my favorite duo but, of the two I'll take Hoda 100 times over.

I don't watch the show but got sick of Kathie Lee years ago. Her constant patter on the Regis and KL show about her perfectly perfect kids and her religion got a little old. She just always presented herself as Miss Goody Two shoes and while I would like to believe in that degree of perfection, I doubt if very many people live up to the standard. Certainly not if you have to toot your own horn.

I was just checking out different channels and I saw Kathie Lee. Hadn't watched her for years. I couldn't look for any length of time, she was so annoying! Who ever thought she should be back on TV?

Kathie Lee & Hoda, who is your favorite?
