Can you show us the desk?

(and personally, as someone who works at home, for long periods of computer work, I'd put ergonomics ahead of decor if you use the computer a lot)

Here is what I have currently. I need something comfy that fits with my decor. Kids and adults will use it. Sorry the picture is so big. I don't know how to make it smaller. Thanks.

For optimum ergonomics for various heights an office chair would be most comfortable, but as you say you do not care for that, what about a Parson's chair: either in leather or microfiber suede? It also has the advantage that it is armless and so can tuck in closer to your desk.

I got my Hancock & Moore leather chair from Craigslist at less than 1/10 of its retail price. It's by far the most comfortable chair I've had, and I have been in it up to 17 hours a day.

Is that desk really comfortable for you using the keyboard? I have an older desk, and I pull out my top drawer for my keyboard, which isn't a great solution, which is why I use my laptop.

I agree that ergometrics should take priority over style, esp. if kids are doing homework or writing on the computer.

Thanks for the responses so far. Valinsv I had also thought of a parsons chair, and although my tushy would be on something softer, I didn't think it would give any support for my back. My 3 dogs I love, love, love your chair. That is more along the lines of what I had in mind. However, we don't have much of a craigslist where I live - town of 30,000, southeast Iowa. I'm sure I could not afford it, but I love it and am drooling.
Ideefixe, I would say that my desk is not all that comfortable. But we are trying to make it work. We don't have space for something bigger and we want it to go in our living room because we monitor our kids on the computer, which is why they don't have their own in their rooms. They do some homework on the computer, but it is often facebook or playing games. DH and I do e-mail and check out favorite websites, so we are not on it for hours on end. I couldn't make it work if we were. I DO think our next computer will be a laptop.

How about something like a banker's chair? I've linked to one below, Pottery Barn has an all wood one, and I've seen a lot on Craigslist. They come without arms, too.

Thank you camlan! I didn't even know about banker's chairs. I really like them and I like what pottery barn offers too. I like the armless ones, and I like the wicker ones - they would add some nice texture to the room. Banker's chairs are more affordable, but everything at Pottery Barn is $400.00 I will not be able to pay that price. Small town living is nice, until it comes to purchases like these. Then it would be nice to have more of a selection.

I was also thinking of the banker's chair, but thought it might be too much of an office look for you. I have the Pottery Barn ones in my office. Like the look, but will say if I sit for long periods I'll get some back ache since I tend to sit forward in the chair. I still need to make some matching seat cushions.

I also did not like the price and bought mine used on Craigslist.

Have you though of a computer armoire for your LR so that you could just close it all up when not in use. Seems to me you'd have the space if you consolidated the file cabinet, printer as well as desk. I'm not sure how much space you have on your wall, but something like one of these:

Although I do not like the look of my file cabinet, I do not think a computer armoire would work for us. We do not sit at the computer for really long periods of time. However, all 5 of us are on and off of it all day. I don't think the doors would ever be shut. I may consider some other options later, but right now I just need to get a different chair. I agree that the bankers chairs have an office look to them. I guess I think that the wood goes better than all of the black chairs that I see all the time. Maybe a bankers chair can be my back up, if I can't find something more affordable that I can be excited about.

What does the rest of your living room look like? Do you want one a swivel one on wheels or stationary? Do you want arms or no arms? WIth no arms you can tuck the chair under the desk, arms it will stick out more. Upholstered back or just the bottom seat? Knowing this will help guide your search.

Have you checked your local Craigslist yet? I've seen a few like my3dogs, though not a Hancock & Moore one, on my CL from time to time. Some of the leather ones with the nailhead trim from perhaps a law office going out of business. Once you get an idea what you want, then you can just keep searching. I searched CL for about one month before I found mine as I just keep searching for different search criteria I though would work: Pottery barn, desk chair, swivel, etc.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. Ice storm knocked out computer for a little while. Yes I've checked out craigslist. We do not live in a big city and anything that would come one would ba at least an hour and a half away. I've looked in used furniture stores. I guess I posted because I wasn't sure what I wanted, I just know I need to change for comfort reasons. And I want something that doesn't have too much of an office look. Anthing comfortable and lower cost that doesn't have too much of an office look and doesn't stick out in my decor would work. Like I said, I love the Hancock and Moore chair but likely cannot afford it. No arms would probably be a better fit, but I would take something with arms, comfy and affordable.

Any other ideas?
