Other Defragment Programs on my XP computers & computer noise?
Comments (18)Two steps backwards, one step forward. While dealing with the impending death of my own pc's hard drive, I had plenty of time to work on her computer. I opened the case. Cleaned out the dust bunnies much more thoroughly than I had in October. I found the fan - and actually took it out and cleaned it thoroughly (mostly compressed air, and a little damp cloth). I did remove the label and add a drop of WD 40. (While I was at it, I searched for replacement fans in case this didn't work - and bookmarked some - it would be so simple to replace if needed.) Put the pieces back together and started it up. Still noisy. I started organizing her files, deleting duplicates and ridiculous things she didn't even know she had on there. I put everything in logical folders - then copied her 16GB of video (Ipod videos and flip share) onto a 32mb flash drive. Deleted 8gb of that video bc. it's also on her ipod. Then I ran auslogics defrag. Defrag was 100% successful - and she now has about 15GB free on a 40GB drive. Now the noise is less. I hear the fan a little - but you have to stop to listen. Not sure if it just took running a little for the oil to do it's thing. From what folks said earlier, it's unlikely that freeing up space and defragging reduced the noise. So far, so good. (I even think I could have turned it on with the case open - but i didn't have to.) Thanks. Lynn....See Morecomputer chairs and hardwood
Comments (17)We have cork floors in the office, and I found that the chairs were marking it. We got plastic mats from IKEA that are surprisingly unobtrusive. No one is going to mistake it for a designer component, but it does the trick. Note that these mats do NOT have the little nubs on them that most chair mats have. The latter are meant to be used on carpet. I took on of the IKEA mats to my office when I opened it and it does NOT work on carpet. It shifts around and the edges curl up, trip me and scratch my ankles. But that is probably more than you wanted to know . . ....See MoreAre there chairs for computer desks which..
Comments (14)I've also been in similar situation--needing to choose two chairs for my home office. Like most things, I turned to Craigslist. With the economy as it is and all the layoffs there are numerous office chairs to have had for a song--many ergonomic, leather, upholstery with or without arms. I ended up buying two black leather ergonomic office chairs, buth then felt they were too bulky. The other option I like is the swivel chairs from Pottery Barn. I was able to procure one of them used and it is just the look I like, but alas not as comfortable. DH prefers an ergonomic chair that has a lower profile than the leather ones so we are still debating, though I use the office more than he does as he just takes his laptop and sits wherever. As for our kids, they have nice desks and ergonomic chairs, but still sit on the beds with their laptops for homework. Here is the Pottery Barn one that I like (and am still looking for another one used as the price tag is way too high for me). Comments (9)I have a computer chair which is the "executive" style. It has a high back, and arms, and it rocks and swivels and goes up/down. It is very comfortable, but like you say, eriepatch, the problem is pushing it under the desk out of the way. I think you might be able to find such a chair with shorter arms, which might get it closer to the desk. Or else, lower it each time you need it stowed, so it would then be tucked out of the way. It would also help if you had a slip cover for it, to personalize it for your bedroom. That would go far to bringing it into the decor of the space....See MoreSueb20
