Had to buy a new one cause DS's step-grandson thinks it is a toy.

Sooooooooo handy getting stuff from kitchen cabinets, etc.

Pulling the ceiling fan on and off, etc etc.

Glenda,they are great aren't they? I have one,back in TX! LOL I need to get one for here,just haven't done it. I can't reach any of the top shelves in this house. I need to put that on my shopping list right now. Never think of it until it's too late!

How old is the step-grandson? If he's really young, I would not let him play with this.

Here's why: At the grabber end, those 2 curved metal strips that look like a V are really, really sharp.

I made the mistake once of grabbing the Gopher at the grabber end and got a fierce cut.

It's a great tool for reaching things, but please tell DS to keep an eye on the kid! (and if the kid's old enough to understand, to talk to him about those sharp edges.)

First of all I am glad to find a forum on this subject with CURRENT (spring/summer 2016) posts! I am in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles and have a likely gopher (although it could be a vole aka field mouse). From all I have read, moles do NOT eat plants, just grubs and insects; so since vegetation is disappearing from my garden in whole or in part, I am assuming gopher and maybe vole. They are the plant eaters. I recently planted my first "edibles garden" (I avoid the term "vegetable garden" since most "vegetables" are fruits - they have seeds -they're fruits), in years in my parched, drought affected yard. Our current water restrictions had me hesitant, but I figured, why not? Growing your own food is better than just facial stuff like watering the lawn. I did not realize though, that I had a critter underground until a couple hundred dollars later, and much, much, much, tilling, amending, and planting, all with a spade, and a rake, and my arms and legs - no machinery or help from others. As of now, I have had 2 whole chile pepper plants disappear underground entirely - poof, gone! A branch of a larger tomato plant also disappeared underground right before my eyes! I have enclosed my garden with garden fencing, but my spaniel-mix dog is doing more damage to get to the gopher than the gopher itself is doing! Between the two, I am going nuts. Replacement plants are expensive, when you have not resolved the underlying (literally!) issue! I am on the verge of wanting to kill this creature, yet I really rather not. I have read many, many weblinks on how to 'repel' these animals (everything from moth balls to radios to wind chimes....which had me laughing hysterically, actually). I noticed that the critter is most active between noon and 2 p.m. give or take. I came up with an idea that I am experimenting with, that does not eliminate the gopher but potentially prohibits the disappearance of whole plants being pulled under the soil line. Here it is: Take an old CD you no longer need, and cut half way through it to the center hole. Then carefully pry it open where the cut is and wrap it around the stalk of your young plants. This may only work on plants that are not too big or mature (with fat stalks) or too young and small like seedlings. My theory is when Mr. Gopher drills that 1.5 inch hole around the plant base and goes to pull that plant down, the plant's limbs and leaves will bunch up and get stuck at the top of the CD's hole and not be able to be pulled through. If this critter is Ironman, then it might not work. But if there is some resistance, it hopefully will not get away with the entire plant! I used an old Microsoft software CD that I no longer need and snipped it with a sharp scissor and put it on my plant yesterday (my last remaining chile). I also put two other chiles in those chicken wire baskets made specifically to deter gophers ($5.00 for two at Home Depot). They look terrible but seem to work. I just want to get to the point where my tomatoes and chiles are not costing $99.95 each with time, labor, materials, water, and replacement plants! I also placed sriracha sauce, hot indian curry powder, red pepper ground, red pepper flakes, onion flakes, and garlic down the hatch with water. Time will tell!

I have a silver Falls in a pot and it has really suffered over the summer :( From what I understand, dichondra is made up of single plants. So I would think that you could dig it up and pot it. Only the damaged plants would not survive. The ones with roots intact should be okay ;)

I also have a gopher problem. I don't have the gophers eating the herbs, only digging tunnels under the plants -- and dangling roots can't survive. If I were going to all the trouble of putting in a whole new bed, I'd rewire.... but I just might use the plastic fence "wire" instead because it won't deteriorate. I haven't tried it yet, but think I might next time 'round.

Jean, From your post I'd definitely identify whether you are dealing with gophers or moles. Not at all the same animal, or the same consequences to your fruit trees. As mentioned, moles are harmless to trees and may actually be beneficial by eating larva of pests potentially harmful to trees (i.e. cicada larva). It's true some people don't like the evidence of tunneling on their lawns, but they don't do as much damage as yard chickens IMO. Personally, I leave moles alone. Plus, Mole was such a kind animal in Wind in the Willows :-) Not so with gophers. I've not had a problem with gophers here, but from what I've read, they can easily destroy trees. I need one of these myself. One, I'm really short and anything past the front edge of the second shelf of the kitchen cabinets is out of reach, and two, I get dizzy when I bend over.

When I drop things, and I drop a lot of things!, I have to call Harry to "fetch" it for me, or lumber myself down to my knees, and then slowly pull myself up.

I could use this to pick up dropped items, and get laundry out of the dryer. It's a long reach into the dryer.

I bought Denny one a few years ago....I use it all the time...LOl.

Especially for things up to high for me to reach. And it will pick up a dime off the floor. I don't have the same brand as you have. I bought ours at a hardware store for about 25 dollars.

I have one, too. It is different from yours and I have had it since I had my first knee replaced. It is a great tool; couldn't get along without it.

I call it my "getter."

I can't believe this post. I almost bought one after Christmas. Right now I just use my tongs but I find the shelves getting higher and higher or am I getting shorter and shorter? I remember when I was a kid, the grocery store owner around the corner had one to reach items on the top shelf.

Around here, volunteer organizations use "gophers" to pick up trash along roadsides - saves a lot of bending over.

I got mine when I had my first hip replacemnt, and love it. I also got one at a garage sale and keep that one in the garage, to reach the stuff on the high shelves. I also have a long tongs in the kitchen that I use a lot. Keeps me from standing on a chair to reach.

I've had one for years. Great when something falls behind a piece of furniture. DH is always losing the TV remote. I grab my gopher, look behinf his nightstand and 905 of the time it's right there. The other 10& I have to work at finding it.

DH LOVES his ... uses it to grab papers and such (other people's trash) outside the fence. With 2 acres fenced, that's a lot of walking!

My husband got one after a surgery a few years ago, then a couple of years ago I bought one at a yard sale for $.25. Handy if you need one.

It is a handy item to have around. I remember my Dad using his to grab dropped item after his stroke. I also remember my boys as young teens grabbing each others arms with it goofing off. Didn't help that G'Pa started it....LOL They knew it was important to G'Pa & were careful. It did make my Dad laugh watching them :~)

Mine gets use in yard work..I don't feel safe leaning over to pick up twigs,leaves etc.. so I pull around the outdoor trash can and pick things up. Glad to see others also use theirs outside.

I have one in the kitchen, one in my bedroom and one in the car to pick up the newspapers with. Best invention since the wheel!! LOL
