It's the kids bathroom, now what?

Does life ever get in the way of your best decorating efforts? Long story short - dh had the painters paint the kids bathroom a dark chocolate brown. Hmmm. It's okay. I LOVE the color itself, but seems a little adult. This bath will be shared by my two sons (1yr & 4 yrs) and one daughter (7yrs).

The vanity is white, the countertop a white/beige cultured marble, the floor - a tanish tumbled marble tile, trim is white.

Do you have advice on accessorizing this space? My two thoughts are: a jungle theme. Animal print shower curtain and window valance. Towels, countertop accessories in the same vein. But it would be easy for this to come off very adult.

Second thought: Turquoise. Bright, bright turquoise and silver. Prety, I could love the combo, but again - it's pretty adult.

I would love advice on how to make a dark brown bathroom, kid friendly.

What ages are your kids? My kids are all under the age of 9 and we have a safari bathroom. I attached the link to our shower curtain, it brightens our bathroom up because it has no windows and its painted a medium beige. I had the kids paint animals inspired by the shower curtain framed them, bought a set of matching towels for display, and added rugs.

I think a jungle theme would be really cute, and I'm sure there are ways to make it less adult. More focus on the animals themselves and less on the animal prints, if you know what I mean. This shower curtain has some brown in it, and check out the monkey toothbrush holder, etc. on the bottom of the page. You could pick up that lime green from the shower curtain for towels, etc.

I forgot to mention that yes, the sewage line exits the house just below the first floor level, so the basement is all downhill. Whether or not I needed a sewage pump wasn't in question, my main questions were about the stubbed out PVC pipes and what my choices are for them. I'll post pictures tonight or tomorrow. I looked again last night and the circle under the stairs has a pipe coming out of it, so it's likely a lid to a sump I think. And I doubt the builders went ahead and installed a sewage ejector pump in there. One of the PVC stubs has a little black pan around it in the floor, and another one has a smaller pipe coming up next to it. There's also a PVC pipe coming up through the stud wall, and I'm thinking this is probably a vent line? Like I said, I'll post pictures soon, but anyone that can help identify the pipes, or what is likely under the lid of the sump, please share. I'm very curious where all the PVC pipes under the concrete floor go. Thanks!

We have a bath like that also, and it was entirely "builder beige" when we moved in. Looked like a cave, blechhh. Here is what we did with it: (click on thumbnail to enlarge) The white beadboard paneling made a huge difference, but I had to have some color. A bigger mirror helps bounce light around the room also!

This is timely. I just this weekend found out the possible reason for one of my friend's unusual name. He only had an initial for a first name, *H*. It was on his drivers license. I caused him grief when he had to fill out forms with his name because they would always hand the form back to him and bark "We need your full name filled in!" and he would have to produce his ID and they would get confused and insist he had a "real name". I had always assumed that his parents did not name him at the hospital and the hospital put in an initial because he had such a common last name and then the parents never got around to having a name put in on the certificate. I found at at his funeral that his middle name was "Rap". At first I thought it was a nickname he acquired because he did always break into 'rap' sometimes and it drove everybody nuts and sometimes people would tell him to 'knock it off', especially when he made the real LOUD popping sounds as part of it. It hurt the ears. But that was his real name. I never thought the word 'rap' was part of the American lexicon back in the sixties and wondered how that came to be his name way back then. This past weekend his name came up in conversation and someone told me he had been named after a famous Black Panther in the '60s. I looked it up and it looks like he probably was named after H Rap Brown. H Rap Brown is famous for his quote "If America don't come around, we're gonna burn it down". Thank you all, I'll try to respond better now that I'm on my computer and not the phone! Ellendi61- thank you. I know. It's a bathroom. You know. Rationally I know. I was so happy with how our powder room turned out that I maybe should have done the same combo- dark cabs, light counter. But I didn't want the counter to look like the old cultured fake marble and I didn't want dark cabs as it's so small. And we used a vanity with an open middle and legs so it is not oppressive at all. But this is different. Thanks pal. I get what you're saying. I totally do. Thank you for the perspective. Amberm145- thank you. I don't find this dull as in boring, but dull as in bland and beige. Maybe I should have gone with the bright blue counter my DS wanted :) Would have spiced things up! And I don't remember exactly what city you're in, but a tile store in Edmonton just sent me 9 samples by like express post at no charge. I love them. So you don't have to go to the train station for me :)

I had a similar dilemma. My kids (both girls) are 6 and 7 but their bathroom would also be used by guests since it's closest to the bonus room. I didn't want something that screamed kiddy decor. I went for the chocolate and aqua. I know it's trendy right now but I love it. Maybe too flowery for your boys though??

Sue20- I love the monkey shower curtain...I showed my kids and they did too.

xoxosmom- great idea about having the kids do some art for the walls.

Lindybarts - I love your home. I watched your build and it turned out great!:) Much as I love the monkeys, I am leary about doing figure/characters of any sort. The kids outgrow that stuff so fast. And just like you said - I hate for it to scream "LITTLE KIDS!" My other thought was to look for light blue & green polka dots or stripes. Haven't seen anything yet...on the other hand, the monkey stuff is cheap. If they outgrow it in a few years, then we can do something different. I have enough other decorating decisions to sweat over right now, I hate to invest too much time/$$ in this one bath.
