fireplace design help needed, thanks!

Ok, we have made huge progress on our fireplace redo. I will show the before pic and where we are now, along with the sample of tile that will go around the fireplace and on floor as the hearth. You will see a hole in top section, that is where the center speaker will go. The tv is a 50" plasma. I have about 24" on both sides of tv.

DH is having a hard time visualizing the final result. The entire area will be knockdown texture just like before. The upper frame, mantle and legs will all be white and the recessed area for the tv and the sides between fireplace and legs will be the light tan that the outer walls are in the rest of the room.

We came up with the idea of using panels that slide over the tv to hide it when not in use, but that would only be while we are sleeping so we decided to not do that. We thought of doing recessed little shelves on both sides of tv but think that will be really distracting while watching tv. We thought of doing three really chunky candle sticks on one side of mantle and hanging a piece of iron work on the other side of the tv. I wanted to do sconces but dh is against that, feels that will be busy just like recessed display shelves.

As for the bottom area. There is about 15" from fireplace to legs. One side will be the tools and the other will be a large vase. So those areas will not seem bare.

Initially we were going to do floor to ceiling recessed shelving on both sides of fireplace but with only 15" on both sides, it was just too thin.

Any ideas on what to put on sides of tv would be helpful.

Hello LoLauren-Hope you post photos of the finished project!I love a fireplace flanked by bookcases also.Beveled glass cabinets in a simple design would be gorgeous, but if you are trying to hide stored items then you could do wood cabinet doors with a darker antiqued glaze for interest as you have alot of wood. You didn't mention what your style is -white painted wood, rustic, traditional? Pamelak

When you say 'natural walnut', do you mean it will be a darker finish than what you have now? I'm trying to envision what finish/color you will have. Not much help as I happen to love stone and I think it will be a huge pain to remove all that stone and replace it with the limestone, although it will be beautiful. You could remove the stone mantel and replace it with a painted or stained wood mantel though. And I'm not even sure I'd want the limestone to go all the way up. Rustic stone, yes; limestone I'm not so sure. Have you looked at Houzz for some inspiration photos? I'd not do the rounded feature on the top shelf but I'd leave the crown molding and the open top for display of larger items on top. You could also change the doors and hardware to something more contemporary/traditional to suit.

@Terra S - I love how your fireplace and TV wall turned out. We are looking at replacing our off-center fireplace with a linear one. If you could answer some questions, I would really appreciate it. Shannon - could you please share what your paint color is? Sorry I don't have any input on the FP other than it looks like good so far.

Wow what an exciting transition! Your granite is gorgeous. I can't wait to see the finished surround. I think once that's put together it will be easier to decide what to put on the sides of the TV.

Everyone loves this color of tan. It is not pink/green/yellow. I found this color in the model home my sis bought and had it colormatched at OSH.

This is what stamp says.
I tried making this color about 5 times when I saw it in her house. She liked the red I used in my living room so much she used it in her dining room. We like all the same colors, she is just more formal and I am more contemporary.

The granite is similar to Uba Tuba that so many use. This one just has more black and tan in it. DH is just concerned that the upper area is so stark right now. He says if we want to make any changes, now is the time.

Orchard Supply Hardware, kind of like an Ace Hardware. The paint is Sears brand. Sears does or used to own OSH.

Thanks again Shannon hopefully Sears can do it from that info - Since you said your style is more contemporary I think maybe not having anything on the side of the TV might work better for you except maybe like you mentioned tall candle sticks and such. This way you can experiment and not be tied to anything. The other thing you could do is just put a wide simple frame around the TV if you feel like you want something in that space. However I don't think it is necessary. Consider your FP before and the picture you had there then think of the TV as your picture. Not sure you need anything.

Nevermind I just realized you already have a drywall frame so don't add another. Nothing on the sides would be my vote except painting that part white like the old FP.

BTW I like the granite choice too.
