Breaking News Alert from the New York Times:

NBC Plan Would Move Leno to Late Nights

Pressed by affiliates and shrinking ratings, NBC has a plan in the works to radically alter its late-night television lineup, restoring Jay Leno to his old spot at 11:35 each weeknight, while pushing the man who replaced him, Conan O'Brien, to a starting time of 12:05 a.m.

A half-hour doesn't seem like much.....

Here in the central time zone, Jay Leno's old time slot began at 10:30 pm which fit our viewing schedule just fine. We watch the 10 o-clock news followed by Leno. We have competiting TV news stations in our area, so one of them begins their news cast at 9:00 pm, the same time slot for Jay Leno's latest show - it wasn't working.

Thank you all for your input/responses. I have been following the Bible and it actually has produced a lawn that looks like this: [And yes I know the grass needed to be cut in these pics] However, point of frustration is two-fold I have over 35 roses in my garden [which must be watered daily if over 90 degrees] and if I use my irrigation system I cannot water them without also watering my lawn. And lately I've been seeing alot of clovers and weeds in my lawn [more than likely from over watering]. Therefore, my only solution is something I did not want to do: water the roses via hose by hand and properly water the lawn via the Bermuda Bible schedule. Sucky thing is that Atlanta is so damn hot to stand outside for an 1/2 hr daily to water these thirsty roses. As for those that read into my response(s) as having an attitude or insulting tone, I did not mean to express myself in this manner, more than likely the frustration with my lawn/roses coming out within the written word. Thank you one and all.

Kevin, the magnetos on these Briggs Opp Twins do have a dubious track record but my own personal experience with the one Opp Twin engine I own is a little different from what you are seeing. My engine runs well in hot weather.............until you cut it off and then try to restart it without allowing time for it to cool down. During the time the engine is still "heat soaked" no spark is delivered to the plugs. Give the engine a half hour to cool (or 10 minutes with a squirrel cage fan directed on the engine) and spark returns and engine runs. My theory on this is that so long as the engine fan is turning, the magneto is essentially one of the coolest components since it is located right next to the fan. In the case of my engine losing spark, I believe it is because the heat soaked engine mass radiates sufficient heat after turning the engine off that the magneto warms to the point that the electronic parts inside the mag fail to act properly and thereby don't allow a spark to be delivered to the plugs. I have not experienced any erratic spark or misfire so long as the engine is kept running. With those thoughts in mind, your slight skipping or flutter sound in the exhaust might be due to a lean burn condition caused by the fuel system design in conjunction with hotter operating temperatures (ambient air temp being just one factor). Lean burn or lean mixture means that the air to fuel ratio is "lean" regarding the volume of fuel present in the intake stream fed to the engine. Lean conditions can be caused by a few different things, some of which are basic design factors such as the size of the main fuel jets in the carburetor. Other factors that can result in a lean condition may be due to the "health" of the engine in general and how that health may affect the air/fuel ratio. One of those health issues is whether the fuel pump can adequately keep pace with the rate of fuel consumption. If for some reason a fuel pump can't maintain sufficient fuel volume to keep the carb bowl filled, a lean condition will develop. Since your fuel pump diaphragm has been replaced we must presume it is delivering enough fuel. Another factor that can cause a lean condition is the engine cooling system duct work that carries air from the fan to be directed over the cylinders and cylinder heads. If there is any kind of blockage anywhere in the air ducting sheet metal shrouding the engine.......air flow will be reduced across the hot surfaces and the surfaces will become even hotter, which will result in a lean condition. And because a lean condition actually burns hotter too, extreme air flow blockage will turn into a vicious cycle that might ultimately end in engine failure with catastrophic damage to cylinders, pistons and other parts. Somewhere below the extreme zone an engine can develop the "lean burn flutters". You would do well to remove all the sheet metal ducting from the engine and clean the cooling fins of the cylinders and cylinder heads. All too often we read in this forum where engines have been trashed because because mice built nests or food caches inside the cooling ducts and the engine succumbs to severe overheat without any forewarning to the owner. A word to the wise is "Clean your air ducts prior to the onset of the annual use cycle". Even if you don't have rodent activity there might be dust and mowing debris lodged in places that will tend to reduce cooling.

Thank you so much for following up with what must be the gazillionth time you've had to tell someone to follow the recipes .. :) my brother has a star fruit tree which is way too productive for one person to keep up with!.. I had been using a dehydrator most of last year and finally made some chutney, i followed the recipe because i did not know what chutney was.. its a strange sweet pickle thing.. I've since found out.. This year I decided to try the jam.. I mixed some other fruit in with the star fruit and boiled it down, i did not add pectin, i likely used extra sugar. The recipe i was "going by" called for too much cinnamon because when i shared some with friends the next day they were polite but "eh" .. I had the same reaction and have had the case of BWB jars on the counter for 2 or 3 weeks to use as a base for the next jam adventure, figuring that if i didn't put in any cinnamon then it would turn out better. Can I still do that? It would mean everything would get boiled for the day; I'm not quick and it somehow takes me that long to make a batch. The only other things I have tried are the fruit leather, again with the recipe because I didn't know what it was, and it is living in the fridge; and I have found out fruit is preserved in jars with booze as long as the alcohol content is over 85 proof.. I have a LOT of that in jars in the garage, its a fast way to do something with the fruit. My idea was to strain them in May (star fruit brother's birthday) because it's supposed to give you yummy vodka after about 4 months, and then I could use the fruit to make chutney or jam at that time. Maybe I should stick to dehydrate and alcohol preserving? Maybe I should take up drinking fruity alcohol instead of canning? I had gotten a pressure canner, I had hoped to can soups. I have a chicken soup started, so far its just boiled chicken and water. I put soups in the fridge so the fat jells at the top and is easy to skim off, but I will to look into some recipes before I start any meat canning.. I have always been able to eat most anything, however I recently poisoned myself for the first time. I make yogurt with one of the home machines, I had a batch in the fridge, which I keep at just under freezing, and I lost track of when I made it because the house flooded which took all of my time for weeks. I when i was mixing the yogurt with some whip cream & jam, (which i put in to the little gram-cracker crumb pie's you get at the store, and I freeze) i tasted it with my pinky finger, like you do, and a few hours later I was the sickest I've ever been in my life.Threw out all the little frozen pies. and got cautious.. so the only question now is: can i use the cinnamon jam in another batch? And are you all going to try the yogurt/ whip cream / jam pies, which work with store yogurt?

I watched Leno almost every night at 11:30 for YEARS. I haven't watched him once since he moved to ten. I instead watch reruns of Criminal minds until the Late Show with Craig Ferguson comes on. ( I'm a night person) He is SO funny to me, I love his show. I think NBC just made a mess of it all and I would be really mad if I were Conan O'brian. I think if Leno's show us failing it should be canceled like any other show would. They gave Late Night to Conan, it's his show now.

I think Jay Leno can be extremely funny, at times; but mostly he seems pretty full of himself these days. He does shows in Vegas where he can make a ton of money, so why is he hanging on at NBC? Other Tonight hosts have known when to bow out gracefully. Too bad Leno can't.

And I agree with danihoney -- Craig Ferguson is the BEST on tv now.

I don't do late night tv so I seldome watched him before he was on at 10. I watched a couple of his shows but at this point think that 30 minutes is 30 minutes too much.

LOL Not a lot of Leno fans here, I see! I'm not a night TV watcher, so I don't have a stake in this. But I thought it was odd that NBC would cut him down to a half-hour.....and do people want to watch a half-hour show in that time slot? Maybe they're figuring that they'll hang in there in order to get to Conan O'Brien.

Lindsey makes a good point......too bad Jay Leno doesn't tell NBC that he has other plans. Probably there are contract issues.

Leno did basically tell NBC he didn't depend on them last night in his monologue. He talked about the rumors and said
"So far, nobodyÂs said anything to me, but Kev, if we did get canceled, it would give us time to maybe do some traveling Â I understand that Fox is beautiful this time of year."

I agree with Oklamoni. The late Johnny Carson was the best Tonight host ever. I tried to like Leno, even watched his ten oclock show a couple of times, but he's just not that likeable.

Leno is obnoxious, with an ego that is incomparable even within show business...always has been.

The story I just read repeated previous reports that local NBC affiliates were complaining about the Leno move to 10PM...that they were losing ratings (and therefore advertising revenue) due to this, and wanted Leno canned. Ratings info showed that former 10PM NBC viewers had shifted to cable programs, and don't tend to change channels after that. OBrien(who I also don't like) has also complained that this is the cause of his poor ratings, also. New owners of NBC seem to agree.

Leno wants to stay on the air, and a tentative agreement has been reached with Leno lawyers to move him to AFTER the local news that he has been killing. OBrien and Fallon have agreed to the moves to Midnight and 1AM.

NBC cannot afford to just fire Leno and pay off his contract.

If ratings are true, Leno no longer has much of an audience to woo FOX with.

NBC is just trying to satisfy (read pacify) everyone. The Leno show was a flop ratings-wise but saved (read made) the network a ton of money. So much so, they compensated affiliates for the Leno losses to keep from spending money on a show that could book some numbers.

From what I've read, Leno isn't the biggest concern. They could give Tonight back to Leno, however then they'd stand a pretty good chance of losing O'Brien whose contract is specific that he has the Tonight Show. I like O'Brien. Much fresher than Leno and much more creative. Triumph is "sidesplittingly" funny. However, O'Brien's traditional audience isn't really the older Tonight Show audience. But at the same time, he's getting affected heavily from Leno's poor ratings since people are leaving the affiliate news so they follow other shows which doesn't give him a fair chance to settle in there either.

I'm not sure why they don't dump Fallon. Poor choice of hosts there. They could try switching things around or even try having Leno follow O'Brien but Leno's ego probably wouldn't allow that.

I seldom watched Leno, often watched O'Brien, although I would watch the reruns in the middle of the night occasionally. I'd flip around when it was Leno on the rerun. I'm not into talk shows very often.

I LOVE the Tonight Show with CONAN!

Leno is just stupid for the most part. Conan is a very intelligent guy - although he can get downright silly - there is more depth to his comedy. I remember how long they gave Leno to catch on (or just wear people down?)...NBC should just give Leno the heave.

I like Conan too and when he's good he's great. But unfortunately I find his shows too erratic in quality. So I usually watch Letterman unless there's a specific guest that I want to see.

I can't stand Leno. I'll be mad if they give him back the Tonight Show. I LOVE Conan, I thought his old show was better because it was a bit edgier, but I'll take Conan any time over Leno or Letterman. Craig Ferguson is hilarious too. I agree that they should let Leno go to a different network. He shouldn't have given up the show in the first place if he just wanted another hour show on the same network.

Conan is keeping the "Tonight" show...it will just start 1/2 hour later.
Leno's 11:30 show will be call the Jay Leno Show.

P.S. - I also love Craig Ferguson, and Dave, too. But, I have to admit that I am one of those who was a longtime viewer of the local NBC news, and now watch the CBS local news.

Does this mean Leno will be on for 30 minutes?
